And how exactly does Roy Moore placing a 5,000-pound monument inscribed with
the 10 Commandments in the state court building, and basically stating that
he will abide by those 10 rules in making state legal decisions, represent
"government staying out of religion?

Our nation was founded by Pilgrims searching for religeous freedom. We were
guaranteed that government would stay out of religeon, not keep religeon out
of government. This country grew from the seed of religeon. Like it or
not.

The aclu should be outlawed and sent to Red China. They would feel right at
home since it is a commie organization.

I don't think he's the Lessor any more than I am the Lessor of the building
I work in. He's merely employed by the state--he doesn't have any power over
the building, that I'm aware of.

As to the state constitution, I agree with that, to a point. I wish we had
the sovereign power in the state to set our own course on such matters, but
since that little skirmish in the 1860's didn't go our way, we are
subservient to the Federal courts, for better or worse, and the monument
violates the U.S. Constitution, as (I would bet) the U.S. Supreme Court will
rule.

And the U.S. Supreme Court has the final say in all legal matters in the
U.S.A., as it stands now.

Again, JMO...interesting discussion.

[RollTideFan] Tide begins to put in game plan...

2003-08-20 Thread J.E. Lisby
Ordinarily, Alabama will have a week to put in its game plan for each
football opponent, and that process will begin on Sundays during the
season. But for the first game, installation of the game plan can begin
earlier, and so it was Wednesday, 10 days from kickoff against the South
Florida Bulls, that Crimson Tide Head Coach Mike Shula and his staff began
exposing the squad to that plan.

Today while in the grocery store I spied two stacks

of chicken kabobs which

had been made by the meat market. The prices on one

stack was $8-10 per

package while the other stack was mis-labeled as pork

neck bones and priced

at $1.50-$2 per package. Do you think it would be

stealing to buy the

mis-labeled packages?.

It would depend on whether or not there were any eggs
similarly mis-labeled in the Dairy section.

"Supreme Court Rejects Last-Minute Alabama Chief Justice Appeal
By Bob Johnson Associated Press Writer
Published: Aug 20, 2003
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on Wednesday lost a
last-minute appeal to the Supreme Court to save a Ten Commandments monument
he installed in a judicial building, clearing the way for its removal.
The high court rejected Moore's emergency plea for a stay, declining to be
drawn into a dispute over whether the 5,300-pound, granite monument
violates the Constitution's ban on government promotion of religion.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson had set a midnight Wednesday deadline
for the monument's removal from the rotunda of the judicial building. He
was not expected to take immediate action to remove the display.

Thompson has threatened $5,000-a-day fines if his order is ignored after
the deadline. Attorneys who sued to force removal of the monument said they
expect to file a contempt of court petition against Moore that Thompson may
consider in a conference call Thursday, setting the stage for fines.

"It's time for Roy's rock to roll," said Ayesha Khan, an attorney for
Americans United for Separation of Church and State, one of the groups that
sued.

Moore installed the monument two years ago after being elected chief
justice amid publicity of his support of the Ten Commandments. In
Washington, D.C., one of Moore's attorneys, Phillip Jauregui, said the
judge was sticking by his pledge to defy Thompson's order.

"The statement that the chief made last Thursday still stands," Jauregui
said. Other Alabama officials could move the monument.

Moore's lawyers told the justices in a filing that Moore should be allowed
to "establish justice by acknowledging the guidance and favor of Almighty
God, placed upon him by his oath of office and the Constitution of
Alabama."

"This case is not about a monument, it's not about politics or religion,
it's about the acknowledgment of God," Moore said on CBS' "The Early Show."
"We must acknowledge God because our constitution says our justice system
is established upon God."

The Supreme Court has never ruled on the constitutionality of such indoor
and outdoor government displays. In 1980, the court barred Ten Commandments
from classroom walls in public schools.

An appeals court had twice refused to give Moore a stay, setting up the
plea at the high court.

"It's not like somebody's about to face execution, if the court doesn't
enter a stay the person will be dead and the appeal will be moot," said
David Frederick, a Washington, D.C., attorney who specializes in Supreme
Court practice. "If the Supreme Court were to decide it's constitutional,
it can always be put back."

Moore already has asked the Supreme Court to consider whether Thompson
overstepped his bounds in the case, and a second appeal of the ruling in
the Ten Commandments case is expected. Those could take months to resolve.

[RollTideFan] preseason Top 100 college players

2003-08-20 Thread SAR
The ONLY BAMA palyer is Justing Smiley at no.95.

  Wednesday, August 20

Winslow tops the preseason Top 100

--

  By Bruce Feldman
  ESPN The Magazine

The Top 100 doesn't reflect how guys figure to get drafted. It is directly off
their impact on the field this season and does not include any injured players. It
also would have included Maurice Clarett -- somewhere in the top 15 -- but since he's
still in limbo we'll wait to add him at midseason.

  1. Kellen Winslow II, Miami, TE: One hundred catches might not be possible, but
nobody creates more mismatches or makes more spectacular catches.

Reggie Williams is the nation's best WR, but he's not good enough to be
No. 1 in the Top 100.
  2. Reggie Williams, Washington, WR: Faster than Mike. More physical than Roy,
this is the most complete Williams. Also has the best QB throwing to him.
  3. Rod Davis, Southern Miss, LB: He may not run 4.38, but he plays fast. College
football's Ray Lewis, he could get 200 tackles and 25 TFLs.
  4. Rashaun Woods, Oklahoma St., WR: Twelve catches for 226 yards and 3 TDs
against an OU secondary that probably has three first-rounders. May not be track fast,
but scouts love his great burst coming out of his breaks.
  5. David Pollack, Georgia, DE: Not very tall (barely 6-feet), he's got
Urlacher-like explosive. Great motor guy. He'll miss Jonathan Sullivan, but will still
find a way.
  6. Larry Fitzgerald, Pitt, WR: Best ball skills of any receiver in the nation.
Almost a sure thing on the fade, he's the Panthers most unstoppable offensive weapon
since Tony Dorsett.
  7. Teddy Lehman, Oklahoma, LB: Runs 4.38. Plays like it too. Has tremendous
closing speed.
  8. Sean Taylor, Miami, S: Track fast (legit sub-4.4 speed) and now as big as
some DEs at 233. Taylor could be a top-five pick whenever he comes out.
  9. Roy Williams, Texas, WR: The fastest of the Williams boys. Had 4 for 142
against good LSU defense in the Cotton Bowl and is finally 100 percent we're told.
  10. Shawn Andrews, Arkansas, OT: Roadgrader with surprisingly quick feet, he
paved the way for the SEC's top ground attack in '02.
  11. Madieu Williams, Maryland, DB: Mr. Smooth. Has great range, instincts and
the feet to even play corner.
  12. Mike Williams, USC, WR: A mauler (81 rec., 1,265 yards and 14 TDs), he's now
15 pounds bigger (up to 228) and a more polished route runner.
  13. Marlin Jackson, Michigan, DB: The Big Ten's best. He's super competitive and
very physical. WRs call him the toughest cover guy in the conference.
  14. Derrick Johnson, Texas, LB: Led UT with 119 tackles and nine stops and three
tackles behind the line against LSU.
  15. Chris Gamble, Ohio State, CB/WR: Playmaker. Made game-saving picks all
season. Then, with some help, did solid job on Andre Johnson in the Fiesta Bowl, but
realized he needed to get stronger -- and thanks to 15 pounds of muscle -- he did.
  16. Darnell Docket, FSU, DT: Even though he was never 100 percent last season,
he still had 17 TFLs.
  17. Robert Gallery, Iowa, OT: Big, smart (3.2 GPA), nimble and has long arms.
The 6-7, 320-pounder might've been the best of the great Hawkeye O-line last season.

NC State's Philip Rivers should be a Heisman contender this season.
  18. Philip Rivers, NC State, QB: Quirky mechanics aside, he is the sharpest QB
around. Blistered a good ND defense going 23 of 37 for 228 yards and 2 TDs in Gator
Bowl.
  19. Darren Sproles, Kansas State, RB: "Tank" added 15 pounds (up to 187) to add
some power to his dazzling video game-like quickness.
  20. Brad Smith, Missouri, QB: Should again rush for over 1,000 yards and might
pass for 3,000 this time around.
  21. Greg Jones, FSU, RB: Nine games, 938 yards before tearing his ACL, a healthy
Jones evokes visions of Eddie George at his best.
  22. Booger Kennedy, North Texas, NG: The 5-9, 315-pounder former standout point
guard is virtually unblockable. Despite doubles and triples, he still had 25 TFLs.
  23. Ben Roethlisberger, Miami (Ohio), QB: The prototype can make all the throws,
even run a little option and now has a deep threat in Martin Nance.
  24. Tommie Harris, Oklahoma, DT: A groin injury kept him to about 70 percent,
but he was still a guy teams had to double all year.
  25. Cedric Benson, Texas, TB: Only had 1,300 yards despite battling through
injuries. 26. Kevin Jones, Virginia Tech, TB: Great talent has worked overtime to
curtail the fumbling and develop as a receiver.
  27. Cody Pickett, Washington, QB: Tough kid, threw for almost 4,500 yards and
should continue to evolve into a future first-rounder thanks to the big arm and good
feet.
  28. Vince Wilfork, Miami, DT: After a nightmarish year losing both his parents,
"Big Daddy" is ready to become the next great Cane DT.
  29. Brandon

[RollTideFan] Legion Field soon to

2003-08-20 Thread atticusjd
Legion Field soon to
be a Tide memory

TUSCALOOSA — "Next season the Alabama football team will not play in Birmingham for
the fist time since 1899. And if you want to see the Crimson Tide at Legion Field,
there are only two more chances.

The Crimson Tide will open the 2005 season at Legion Field against Middle Tennessee
State. After that, there is just one more game left on UA's contract with Legion
Field. The Tide has the option to play that game in either 2007 or 2008.

And they likely won't play another game there in the future.

Legion Field has its history, but its prime as a football cathedral is history.

"The on-campus atmosphere is what makes college football special," said Tide Athletics
Director Mal Moore.

The Crimson Tide used to need Legion Field to fit all the people that wanted to see
the Crimson Tide play. But since 1998, Bryant-Denny Stadium has a larger seating
capacity that Legion Field.

Bryant-Denny also has other advantages. Like the university? It's in Tuscaloosa.
Legion Field isn't in the most scenic part of Birmingham, and every Alabama football
game means big money to wherever it is played. That means the city of Tuscaloosa will
welcome the extra game in the city.

The Crimson Tide doesn't lose much money from playing at Legion Field, but it is a
hassle for the entire support staff for the Crimson Tide — trainers, media
relations, ticket office personnel.

Moore said the Crimson Tide isn't ducking Penn State, which it was scheduled to play
in 2005 and 2006, but Alabama needs home games in the next couple of years to make up
for the loss of Southeastern Conference bowl money because of recent NCAA sanctions.
"We're losing $3 million each year from bowl revenue," Moore said. "We had to push
back an away game for seven home games to make up for that revenue."

Upcoming games with the Nittany Lions have been rescheduled for 2013 and 2014.

He also noted that Auburn has recently changed its future schedules as well. (The
Tigers are looking to get out of an upcoming series with Clemson, in fact. It happens
everywhere.)

Construction has started on the Tuscaloosa campus, and there's more to come.
Press conferences with head coach Mike Shula have been interrupted by jackhammers as
the work continues on the football building renovations and the new weight rooms. That
work should be done in December, Moore said.

Moore said renovations on Bryant Hall and the construction of the new soccer stadium
and tennis complex should begin in the next two or three weeks.

Bryant Hall will be turned into an academic center for all Alabama athletes"

[RollTideFan] Supreme Court Rejects Last-Minute Alabama ChiefJustice Appeal

2003-08-20 Thread atticusjd
"Supreme Court Rejects Last-Minute Alabama Chief Justice Appeal
By Bob Johnson Associated Press Writer
Published: Aug 20, 2003

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on Wednesday lost a
last-minute appeal to the Supreme Court to save a Ten Commandments monument he
installed in a judicial building, clearing the way for its removal.
The high court rejected Moore's emergency plea for a stay, declining to be drawn into
a dispute over whether the 5,300-pound, granite monument violates the Constitution's
ban on government promotion of religion.

U.S. District Judge Myron Thompson had set a midnight Wednesday deadline for the
monument's removal from the rotunda of the judicial building. He was not expected to
take immediate action to remove the display.

Thompson has threatened $5,000-a-day fines if his order is ignored after the deadline.
Attorneys who sued to force removal of the monument said they expect to file a
contempt of court petition against Moore that Thompson may consider in a conference
call Thursday, setting the stage for fines.

"It's time for Roy's rock to roll," said Ayesha Khan, an attorney for Americans United
for Separation of Church and State, one of the groups that sued.

Moore installed the monument two years ago after being elected chief justice amid
publicity of his support of the Ten Commandments. In Washington, D.C., one of Moore's
attorneys, Phillip Jauregui, said the judge was sticking by his pledge to defy
Thompson's order.

"The statement that the chief made last Thursday still stands," Jauregui said. Other
Alabama officials could move the monument.

Moore's lawyers told the justices in a filing that Moore should be allowed to
"establish justice by acknowledging the guidance and favor of Almighty God, placed
upon him by his oath of office and the Constitution of Alabama."

"This case is not about a monument, it's not about politics or religion, it's about
the acknowledgment of God," Moore said on CBS' "The Early Show." "We must acknowledge
God because our constitution says our justice system is established upon God."

The Supreme Court has never ruled on the constitutionality of such indoor and outdoor
government displays. In 1980, the court barred Ten Commandments from classroom walls
in public schools.

An appeals court had twice refused to give Moore a stay, setting up the plea at the
high court.

"It's not like somebody's about to face execution, if the court doesn't enter a stay
the person will be dead and the appeal will be moot," said David Frederick, a
Washington, D.C., attorney who specializes in Supreme Court practice. "If the Supreme
Court were to decide it's constitutional, it can always be put back."

Moore already has asked the Supreme Court to consider whether Thompson overstepped his
bounds in the case, and a second appeal of the ruling in the Ten Commandments case is
expected. Those could take months to resolve. ..." (snip)

because this place needs some energy

THIS IS ALABAMA FOOTBALL
It is Wallace Wade.
It is Paul "Bear" Bryant.
It is the Rose Bowl.
It is hearing Keith Jackson call an Alabama game.
It is watching George Teague running down Lamar Thomas in the 1993 Sugar
Bowl, then rewinding it and watching it again.
It is hearing the first notes of "Sweet Home Alabama." Sorry UAB & Auburn,
but that isn't your song.
It is the desire to beat Auburn at any competitive event that exists.
It is the houndstooth hat.
It is having enough pride to fight for your school but having enough class
not to.
It is cheering the same amount for a first down on 2nd & 6 as on 4th & 1.
It is watching Cornelius Bennett give Notre Dame QB Steve Beuerlein a
concussion on that October day in Birmingham in 1986.
It is determining whom you are going to date & marry by which team they
swear allegiance to.
It is watching The Bear on the Jumbotron in Bryant-Denny Stadium and almost
seeing him leaning against the goalpost.
It is spending a day at the Bryant Museum & still not seeing everything.
It is cool crisp autumn Saturdays where you can smell football in the air
&feel it with the slightest breeze.
It is watching The Bear get #315 against Auburn (how appropriate).
It is watching The Bear get #323 against Illinois.
It is hearing Paul Kennedy call theplay-by-play as Van Tiffin kicks the
52-yd game winning field goal against Auburn in 1985.
It is knowing how many days until the start of the season year around.
It is driving down Colonial Drive to see Bryant-Denny Stadium.
It is getting chills up & down your entire body whenever you hear anything
about the 1993 Sugar Bowl & the pride you feel because on that night,
TRADITION RULED.
It is hearing Coach Bryant's voice & having all the hair on the back of your
neck stand straight up because you know that no matter what he said, it was
something special.
It is hearing The Million Dollar Band play "Yea Alabama" and knowing it just
doesn't get any better.
It is imagining hearing Penn State QB Chuck Fusina ask Alabama linebacker
Barry Krauss "How close is it?" & hearing Barry say "About an inch, you'd
better pass" right before 4th down during the Goal Line Stand in the 1979
Sugar Bowl.
It is almost coming to tears whenever Alabama loses to Auburn or Tennessee.
It is The Kick.
It is the Goal Line Stand.
It is The Desperation Block.
It is purposely not wearing any clothes with the colors orange & blue.
It is the 3rd Saturday in October.
It is not needing an alarm clock on game days. You sit straight up in bed
long before it goes off, knowing it's game day.
It is walking into the stadium with the feeling that Alabama will win the
game, simply because that is the way it is supposed to be.
It is saying "Offense wins games, defense wins national titles."
It is walking into the stadium hours before the game just to be there.
It is walking into another school's stadium & having those fans hate you
because you're a Bama fan.
It is the pride that a father has when he brings his children to a game so
they may cherish the tradition. The grin you get when an Auburn Fan proves
again to the world how little class they really have and how envious of
Alabama Football they really are.
It is beating LSU in Baton Rouge, again and again.
It is hearing the crunch as a crimson clad linebacker takes down a running
back dressed in orange & blue.
It is the pride you take in being EVERY team's rival.
It is pulling for any team that's playing Auburn.
It is pulling for any team that's playing Tennessee.
It is hoping that the stadium blows up when Auburn plays Tennessee.
It is knowing that the SEC Championship is a birthright.
It is being respected, & feared at the same time.
It is holding up four fingers at the end of the 3rd quarter.
It is knowing what singing "Rocky Top" in Neyland Stadium with the Million
Dollar Band in Knoxville feels like.
It is knowing what "Mama Called" means.
It is knowing what "paying property taxes in Tennessee" means.
It is having 21 SEC Championships. It is having 12 National Championships.
It is more than we can ever mention in these thoughts.
It is class.
It is tradition.
IT IS ALABAMA FOOTBALL.
