One more from the AJC suggesting Housel should resign...

[ The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 11/28/03 ]

*Housel's actions are bizarre*

The easy part of this job is ripping somebody I don't like. The hard
part is ripping somebody I do. I like David Housel a lot. I believed he
embodied all the good things about Auburn. I believe that no longer.

David Housel used to be Auburn's sports information director, and in
that capacity he was no worse than second-best in the nation. (Georgia's
Claude Felton was and is without peer.) Housel became Auburn's athletics
director in 1994, a move applauded in this and other spaces as a rare
case of a good man getting his dream job. Alas, not every sweet dream
has a happy ending.

Housel heads a department that has embarrassed itself beyond redemption.
Eight days ago, he and school president William Walker and two Auburn
trustees flew to Sellersburg, Ind., on a private plane owned by Colonial
Bank -- the notorious booster Bobby Lowder heads Colonial Bank,
naturally -- to meet with Bobby Petrino, who coaches Louisville. In the
course of that conversation, an understanding was reached that Petrino
would become Auburn's next coach, a matter apparently uncomplicated by
the ongoing presence of Tommy Tuberville as Auburn's current coach.

When news of the meeting became public, Walker said he was sorry it
happened and, backtracking, asked Tuberville to remain Auburn's coach. I
don't know Walker, and if this is any indication how he runs his
university I have no desire to meet him. But I've known Housel for 20
years, and I am appalled.

Maybe he's scared of Lowder and/or Walker, but a cowed AD is a lousy AD.
Vince Dooley had the guts to announce his public disapproval of Michael
Adams' hasty firing of Jim Donnan. By way of conspicuous contrast,
Housel flew with Walker and sat with Petrino while Tuberville was
preparing his team to play Alabama, an annual event that has apparently
clouded Housel's judgment.

There's a tape of his comments, made to the Auburn radio network before
Saturday's Iron Bowl, available on the Internet. It lasts six minutes
and is chilling throughout. Housel mentions Vietnam and Dunkirk,
Churchill and Ozymandias. He likens the Alabama game to a war without
end. He calls those Alabama fans who might be listening "eavesdropping
voyeurs." That these words were obviously scripted, as opposed to an
off-the-cuff ramble, is doubly troubling. If this is truly the way
Housel feels, he has no value to his university.

We look to leaders for perspective, not flights of fancy. We look to the
head of an athletics department to remind us that a football game is
still, after the tumult and the shouting, still just a game. When a
school's president gets the harebrained idea to meet with another
school's coach - without, it should be noted, the knowledge or consent
of the second school - while the president has a coach under contract,
it's incumbent on the AD to say, "You can't do that. This isn't how
honorable people conduct business. This is beyond the pale."

If Housel made these objections, he didn't make them so strongly that
the charter flight was aborted. Indeed, he tagged along. This is the
same David Housel who didn't stand up for Terry Bowden when the
notorious Lowder went after the coach during the 1998 season. This is
the same David Housel who used to shake his head over the cutthroat
methods he'd ascribe to hated Alabama. Somehow that principled man has
become a capricious administrator who grants his coaches contract
extensions - Bowden got one the winter before he was forced out;
Tuberville was given a new five-year deal in February - and then
abandons them.

In its never-ending fight to one-up its avowed enemy, Auburn has sunk
beneath the Tide. I wouldn't have believed such a thing could happen on
this man's watch. The David Housel I know, or at least knew, likes the
Atlanta Braves and Broadway shows and could differentiate right from
wrong. Going poaching with a coach still in place was wrong. The David
Housel I knew would be ashamed. The David Housel I knew would resign.

*An embarrassment to Auburn*

NCAA president Myles Brand says that he wants to bring a greater sense
of ethical behavior to college athletics. The key to this, Brand said,
is greater involvement in athletics by the college presidents. I'm
paraphrasing here, but Brand's point is that presidents should be above
the partisan, back-stabbing and often sleazy behavior that has become so
common in college athletics.

Good morning, Auburn. Welcome to the brave new world of presidential
involvement.

Eight days ago, about 48 hours before his school was scheduled to play
Alabama, Auburn president William Walker got on a private jet owned by
his most powerful booster, Bobby Lowder. Walker flew to a tiny airport
near Louisville, Ky. Without asking permission from U of L athletics
director Tom Jurich or his presidential counterpart, James R. Ramsey,
Walker held a secret meeting with Louisville football coach Bobby Petrino.

On the jet with Walker were athletics director David Housel and two
members of the Auburn Board of Trustees. They wanted to determine
Petrino's interest in the Auburn job should it come open. Petrino
insisted Wednesday that Walker did not tell him that Tommy Tuberville,
the current Auburn coach, was about to be fired. When news of the secret
meeting became public, an embarrassed Petrino wisely withdrew his name
from consideration and deservedly took his lumps after interviewing for
a job that one of his friends still held.

By Wednesday night an embarrassed Walker, with everybody including the
governor questioning his sanity, issued a strangely worded statement
that essentially said: "Sorry about that. Coach Tub can come back in
2004 -- If he wants to."

*No loyalty, integrity*

For the moment, let's set aside all the ethical questions raised by a
college president secretly meeting with a coach who is under contract to
another school. And let's forget about the fact that Walker had just
concluded some joint meetings with the Louisville president earlier in
the week but never said a word about his interest in Petrino.

"I would really like to know what drove that president to fly up here,"
Jurich said.

So would I, but here's the larger question. Where's the loyalty? Where's
the integrity? If you don't want Tommy Tuberville to be your football
coach, fine. Fire him or tell him he's going to be fired after the last
game. But be a man about it.

In his statement, Walker tried to spin the meeting with Petrino as just
part of his evaluative process of Tuberville.

That's ridiculous.

You don't hire an executive search firm, which Walker did, unless you've
made up your mind to make a change. And you don't fly around the country
interviewing other coaches to decide if you're going to fire your
present coach.

And when you have a coaching staff busting their collective butts to get
a team ready to play your arch rival, you don't encourage them in public
and then go off and undermine them in private.

*President should resign*

This episode has already proven to be a monumental national
embarrassment to Auburn. And think of this: Alabama is still on NCAA
probation. The Crimson Tide had a losing season in 2003, and the effects
of scholarship reductions are just starting to kick in. They have a
young head coach who is still learning on the job. With all that
negativity going on at its hated rival, Auburn still found a way to grab
a ton of lousy press just in time for its coaches to go recruiting.

It is a self-destructive episode of the worst kind. Walker has asked
Tuberville to return at a time when the president has dug an even deeper
hole for him and his coaching staff. Given what has happened, how can
Tuberville ever trust this man again?

Given the strong commitment that the SEC presidents say they are making
to clean up the league's image, they should formally and publicly
censure Walker for his actions. Then Walker should resign. If he doesn't
resign, then Governor Bob Riley should fire him. Here's why:

"I believe in honesty and truthfulness, without which I cannot win the
respect and confidence of my fellowmen."

That is the third principle of The Auburn Creed, written by George
Petrie, the school's first football coach. It is the document which all
Auburn men and women swear to uphold. It lists a number of qualities
that make up the Auburn man or woman and ends with this:

"And because Auburn men and women believe in these things, I believe in
Auburn and love it."

For those who truly love Auburn, this is a sad, sad day.

BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) - President Bush made a surprise Thanksgiving
visit to American troops in Baghdad Thursday, flying secretly to
violence-scarred Iraq to thank U.S. forces for serving there. It was
the first trip ever by an American president to Iraq - a mission
tense with concern about his safety.
"You are defending the American people from danger and we are
grateful," Bush told some 600 soldiers who were stunned and
delighted by his appearance.
The president's plane - its lights darkened and windows closed to
minimzie chances of making it a target - landed under a crescent
moon at Bagdad International Airport.
Bush flew in on the plane he most often uses, and White House
officials went to extraordinary lengths to keep the trip a secret,
fearing its disclosure would prompt terrorist attempts to kill him.
The news of Bush's trip was not released until he was in the air
on the way back to the United States. "If this breaks while we're in
the air we're turning around," White House communications director
Dan Bartlett told reporters on the flight to Baghdad.
Security fears were heightened by an attack last Saturday in
which a missile struck a DHL cargo plane, forcing it to make an
emergency landing at the airport with its wing aflame.
Bush spent only about two hours on the ground, limiting his visit
to the airport dinner with U.S. forces. The troops had been told
that the VIP guests would be L. Paul Bremer, the U.S. administrator
in Iraq, and Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, commander of coalition forces
in Iraq.
In a ruse staged in the name of security, the White House had put
out word that Bush would be spending Thanksgiving at his ranch in
Crawford, Texas, with his wife, Laura, his parents and other family
members. Even the dinner menu was announced.
Instead, Bush slipped away from his home without notice Wednesday
evening and flew to Washington to pick up aides and a handful of
reporters sworn to secrecy. Plans called for the trip to be
abandoned if word had leaked out in advance.
Within the White House only a handful of senior aides knew about
the trip, officials said.
Security fears were underscored by regular attacks against U.S.
forces in Iraq. More than five dozen U.S. troops were killed by
hostile fire in November, more than any other month since the end of
major combat in Iraq on May 1. Early this week, a U.S. military
official, Col. William Darley, said attacks peaked at more than 40
per day about two weeks ago and have since dropped to about 30 per
day.
The violence persisted Thursday as the president was en route
here.
Insurgents fired a rocket-propelled grenade at the Italian
mission in Baghdad, damaging the building but causing no injuries,
the U.S. military said. Also, a U.S. military convoy came under
attack on the main highway west of Baghdad near the town of Abu
Ghraib, witnesses said. And in the northern city of Mosul,

[RollTideFan] LSU's Fisher pulls out of Mississippi State coaching search

2003-11-27 Thread kurt rasmussen

LSU's Fisher pulls out of Mississippi State coaching search
RALPH D. RUSSO
Associated Press
STARKVILLE, Miss. - LSU offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher withdrew from
consideration for the head coaching position at Mississippi State on
Thursday.

The Bulldogs are looking to replace Jackie Sherrill, who announced in
October he will retire after this season. Mississippi State (2-9, 1-6
Southeastern Conference) played rival Mississippi Thursday night,
wrapping up a third straight losing season.

Fisher released a statement through the LSU athletic department saying
he canceled an interview with Mississippi State athletic director Larry
Templeton that was scheduled for Saturday.

Third-ranked LSU plays Arkansas in Baton Rouge on Friday.

Fisher appeared to be the leading candidate for the job, drawing the
most speculation in recent weeks.

"It's obviously very flattering to have your name mentioned for a head
coaching position in the Southeastern Conference," Fisher said. "On the
other hand, I'm very happy here at LSU and as a result I have decided to
pull my name from consideration for the head coaching position at
Mississippi State."

Fisher's withdrawal could open the door for Green Bay Packers assistant
coach Sylvester Croom.

A Memphis television station, citing unidentified sources, reported
Wednesday night that Croom would be hired by Mississippi State.

Croom released a statement through the Packers after Thursday's game in
Detroit.

"It is inappropriate for me to comment about that at this time," he said.

Templeton denied the report about Croom before Thursday night's game. He
said he has not offered the job to Croom nor would he confirm that Croom
has been interviewed.

"I've interviewed a lot of people. We're not going to discuss
individuals," Templeton said.

The 59-year-old Croom was an All-American center for Bear Bryant at
Alabama in the early 1970s. He was an assistant for the Crimson Tide
from 1977-86 and nearly landed the Alabama job when it came open last
May after Mike Price was abruptly dismissed.

The Crimson Tide were criticized by some, including The Rev. Jesse
Jackson, for picking Mike Shula, who is white, over Croom, who is black
and has more experience.

The SEC is the only BCS conference to have never had a black head coach.

Heading into the game against Ole Miss, Mississippi State was 8-26 over
the past three seasons with just three SEC wins. The Bulldogs are also
awaiting the results of an NCAA investigation into possible rules
violations by the football program.

[RollTideFan] "Javvy Special" (taint)

2003-11-27 Thread TIDE1

Subject: How the Catholic Church works

There were two Catholic boys, Timothy Murphy and Secola Antonio, whose

lives paralleled each other in amazing ways.

In the same year Timothy was born in Ireland, Secola was born in Italy.

Faithfully they attended parochial school from kindergarten through

senior year in high school.

They took their vows to enter the priesthood early in college and, upon

graduation became priests.

Their careers had come to amaze the world, but it was generally

acknowledged that Secola was just a cut above Timothy in all respects.

Their rise through the ranks of bishop, archbishop and finally cardinal

was meteoric to say the least, and the Catholic world knew that when the

present Pope died, it would either be one of the two who would become

the next pope.

In time the pope did die, and the College of Cardinals went to work.

In less time than anyone had expected, white smoke rose from the chimney

and the world waited to see whom they had chosen.

The world, Catholic, Protestant and secular were surprised to learn that

Timothy Murphy had been elected pope!

Secola Antonio was beyond surprise. He was devastated, because even with

all of Timothy's gifts, Secola knew he was the better qualified.

With gall that shocked the Cardinals, Secola asked for a private session

with them in which he candidly asked, "Why Timothy?"

After a long silence, an old cardinal took pity on the bewildered man

and rose to reply. "We knew you were the better of the two, but we just

could not bear the thought of the leader of the Roman Catholic Church

being called "Pope Secola."

I wish ya'll the very best and have a great Thanksgiving ... Cheers
