They went down to the field afterward, where 'Bama defensive tackle Byron Holdbrooks gave Marc his chin strap. "He was wide-eyed," said Doug, "and you could tell he was hooked." Two years later, father and son found themselves staying at the same hotel as the Tide the night before their game against Vanderbilt. Marc managed to get his football autographed by every member of a team that would go on to win the national championship. The ball -- which could probably fetch a pretty hefty sum on eBay -- sits on display in Doug's real estate office. "That's when I pretty much became a 'Bama fan," said Marc, who may have been the only kid in Chico, Calif., with a poster of Bear Bryant on his bedroom wall. "This was always where I wanted to be." Twelve years later, in the wake of Brodie Croyle's season-ending ACL injury, Guillon is the starting quarterback for the Crimson Tide as they head into their SEC showdown Saturday with Arkansas. He has been passed a torch once held by Joe Namath, Kenny Stabler and a host of other 'Bama greats. But then, Guillon (pronounced Gill-en) is no stranger to carrying on legacies. At Miramonte High School in Orinda, Calif., he was part of a long line of future Division I-A quarterbacks that includes Ken Dorsey (Miami), Drew Bennett (UCLA), Adam Smith (Duke) and Taylor Humphrey (Hawaii). During his two-year run from 2000-01, Guillon threw for 4,750 yards and 43 touchdowns and captured consecutive sectional titles (there is no state championship in California) while also excelling at basketball and the high-hurdles "Marc's a better athlete than Kenny [Dorsey] was in terms of running and jumping," said Floyd Burnsed, who coached both Dorsey and Guillon at Miramonte before moving to Solano (Calif.) junior college. "Both of them were excellent quarterbacks." Dorsey, of course, went on to Miami, where he went 39-2 as a starter and won a national championship. When Burnsed took Guillon to visit a 'Canes spring practice following Dorsey's freshman season, then-Miami head coach Butch Davis offered the 6-foot-3, 212-pound Guillon a scholarship -- before he'd even started a varsity game. Guillon signed with the 'Canes in 2002 and figured he'd be following in his former teammate's footsteps again. From nearly the time he got there, though, Guillon soured on Miami. He says he felt "jerked around" by the coaches, who told him he'd have a chance to compete for the job as a redshirt freshman but seemed to be focusing entirely on upperclassmen Brock Berlin and Derrick Crudup. Some would say Guillon was crazy to leave the nation's most renowned quarterbacking school for a program Bear Bryant built on running over people, but for Guillon, it was the fulfillment of a childhood dream. Though he hails from California, his aunt, uncle and about a dozen cousins reside across the river from Tuscaloosa. When Guillon was being recruited out of Miramonte, however, Alabama wasn't a practical destination. Then-coach Dennis Franchione, who would leave for Texas A&M after just two seasons, was running an option-based offense in Tuscaloosa. "I came here for a visit with Franchione in high school, and I didn't get the right feel for him," Guillon said. More bad feelings arose during his year in Miami, and, after months of deliberation, he finally made his mind up to transfer just weeks prior to the 2003 season. "There was always something in the back of my mind at Miami that it wasn't right for me," said Guillon. "I just liked the atmosphere here better, the coaches better, I have a lot of family here. This just felt like home." Beyond his attachment to the school, Guillon, who also considered Tennessee, was drawn by the pro-style offense run by new Tide head coach Mike Shula, who wasn't hired until May. With only a few weeks of fall practice to install the offense, 'Bama struggled in a 4-9 season, relying almost entirely on running back Shaud Williams for production. When Croyle missed two games with an injury, it got downright ugly. While there's never a good time to lose your starting quarterback, the circumstances may be different this year. The Tide, 3-0, have shown much more balance in blowout wins over Utah State, Ole Miss and Western Carolina, and the coaches have far more faith in Guillon than they did in last year's backups. Dude, that is a bit harsh. He wasn't calling the plays. I'd say the same about Kines and Rader. They coached like they were scared today. If they had shown some confidence in Gullion and let him get comfortable throwing the ball early on, things might have been different. But they aren't. We lost.
