[RollTideFan] We Miss Ray, We Love Ray...

2004-10-13 Thread Rick Mc.
Said Rader: I just sense in that meeting room that our guys feel like
we can still have a running game. We miss Ray. We love Ray, but somebody
has to fill in, and I just sense they'll all going to pull together
again and do that. We've lost two very, very good offensive football
players.

My apologies, Jamie, I shouldn't have made light of your question. It's
my understanding that Gilligan's back tightens up on him and hinders his
throwing motion, but Shula said on Sunday he *could* have played against
UK if needed. Now if Gilligan's back gets worse, then yes, we are
 officially SOL.

We are not SOL. We are now a running team. Yes, even with Ray-Ray gone, our
game plan (you listening to me Mike??) is to run the fruking ball.

All we need is a warm body to hand the ball off to the running backs.

Time for the O line to make a statement.

That is all.

UA expands homecoming court
For the first time, males will join the tradition

By Adam Jones
Staff Writer
October 13, 2004

TUSCALOOSA | Homecoming festivities at the University of Alabama are about
tradition, and this year the university hopes to start another.

For the first time, the homecoming queen and her court will have male
counterparts.

Students filed into the third floor of the Ferguson Student Center on
Tuesday to vote for the capstone gentleman, a sort of homecoming king.

Over the last couple of years you start to look at it, and somebody could
make an issue that guys weren't part of homecoming court, said Rick Funk,
adviser to the student homecoming committee. We have a lot of guys
deserving to be recognized.

Six men were nominated for the position, and the five with the most votes
will be part of the homecoming court.

UA student Corinne Mixon, chair of the homecoming committee, said the idea
for a male version of the queen came from the administration but that calls
for homecoming equality were bound to come from somewhere eventually.

They kind of thought it would be more a [politically correct] thing, she
said.

The student reaction has been mixed, but the idea is catching on, she said.

Anytime you change something up, it can throw people off guard, Mixon
said.

Walking out of the voting room, UA junior Justin Cox said he voted for the
queen, but not the gentleman.

I didn't know what it is, the Anniston native said. You know, whatever,
it looks good on a resume, and girls can have it, so why can't the guys?

Margaret King, UA vice president for student affairs, said she wanted the
homecoming court to be a recognition of deserving students.

The homecoming queen has been in place for a long time, but if you are to
recognize student accomplishments, it needs to have both women and men, she
said.

Mixon said the homecoming committee looked at other universities that have
similar positions.

We just thought king was a little too high-school, she said.

Instead of a crown, the capstone gentleman will wear a houndstooth hat like
legendary football coach Paul Bear Bryant.

It's just a classy way to present it, Mixon said.

The capstone gentleman and the four other men will not replace fathers and
family as homecoming court escorts at halftime, but will escort their
mothers, Funk said.

During the pre-game parade, the capstone gentleman will be paired with the
queen and the other four will be with the rest of the court, he said.

Mixon said she likes the addition, but she and others have worked to
overcome the initial girly stereotype.

It totally isn't, she said. Even all the guys running are confident
that's not the way it's going to be perceived.

Mathew Bees, a gentleman nominee, said campaigning for the position has been
difficult because it's new.

It's been unusual because people don't know what it is, he said. In the
past few days we've really educated the campus.

Justin Carroll, also a nominee, said he considers the position an honor, and
that response to the position has been positive.

I always thought there should be a male counterpart, said Carroll, also
one of four students who suit up as UA mascot Big Al on game days.

Like nominees for homecoming queen, a student must have completed a minimum
of 64 UA class hours, a 2.5 grade point average and be a full-time student.

Students can be nominated by any organization or any individual, including
themselves, for both queen and gentleman. Sixteen women were nominated for
queen.

The top five vote-getters in each position will be announced today, and the
gentleman and queen will be announced Friday night.
