It is Saturday, Oct. 9, and the usual few dozen football fans are gathered at Adams's home in East Memphis to watch Tennessee play Georgia. In the den, Adams has five TVs tuned to five games -- more than 200 inches of TV space, altogether. The set in the middle, the 52-inch big-screen, shows Tennessee and Georgia. And now the referee is signaling a penalty on Georgia and no touchdown. Those officials are going to get killed, says Tim Jones. Jones's photo is among the nearly 600 framed pictures and articles that cover Adams's walls like wallpaper, a collage that testifies to his large circle of dear friends from the college football world and his rise from the slums of South Memphis to his current status as a wealthy owner of a property management company. A former quarterback for the local college football program Adams still refers to as Memphis State, Jones has known Adams since he played for the Tigers and is a regular at the football parties. See, says Adams, that's why you've got to have policemen in society. Georgia was crooked. Adams has come to consider himself something of an authority on crookedness, and he doesn't deny that college football, this game he loves, has a corrupting influence. Those football factories, the players are there to generate revenue, Adams says. If we get to where these football players can read or write, that would be an admirable goal. It's all a joke. And yet, those who know Adams say the 66-year-old UT graduate is the biggest college football fan in Memphis, if not the entire Southeast (and, hence, the country). When it comes to Tennessee football, the shortened fan does not do Adams's fervor justice. His fanaticism is such that the mere mention of his name can create controversy among SEC fans. This is just one of many contradictions in the Dickensian character that is Roy Adams. Being a college football fan is a sickness, Adams says. College football is a cult, and we are all in different cults. It's like Jim Jones and all those people committing suicide. Alabama and Tennessee fans are the same way. When Alabama plays Tennessee this week, Roy Adams will sit in Neyland Stadium urging his beloved Volunteers to defeat hated Alabama. To many Tennessee fans, Adams is an eccentric -- with a capital E -- and colorful character who does no harm. To many Alabama fans, Adams looms as a sinister character in a rivalry now more bitter and more intense because of Tennessee's involvement with the NCAA and FBI investigation that led to severe sanctions against Alabama. It was Adams and his former UT-educated attorney, Southland Capital president Karl Schledwitz, who first urged former Trezevant assistant coach Milton Kirk to tell NCAA officials about the recruitment of Albert Means, who signed with Alabama in 2000. In 2001, Kirk claimed that Memphian Logan Young, a wealthy Alabama booster, gave $200,000 to former Trezevant coach Lynn Lang to steer his prize recruit, Means, to the Crimson Tide. The story, first reported by The Commercial Appeal, turned into a national scandal. An FBI investigation produced guilty pleas from Kirk and Lang for shopping Means and an indictment of Young, who has always denied any involvement with Means's recruitment. Adams first emerged as a herald of sorts, trumpeting allegations that Young was spending money to steer players to Alabama. On the Tennessee message board, Adams uses the handle, TennStud, after the old Jimmy Driftwood song. Adams has gloried in Alabama's troubles, and the word gloat and the term rub it in are often used to describe his posts. With Alabama fans, he can create a stir in a heartbeat, says Rodney Orr, who runs the popular Alabama message board TiderInsider. Phillip Shanks, an attorney in Cordova, has filed lawsuits along with Montgomery, Ala., attorney Tommy Gallion against the NCAA and Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer on behalf of their clients, former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams. In a now-famous episode among hardcore UT and Alabama fans, Adams showed up to a deposition with Shanks wearing his white coonskin cap and carrying a bottle of whiskey. Adams often directs his verbal barrages at Shanks and Gallion. Alabama-Tennessee rivalry grows uglier By TONY BARNHART The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 10/21/04 Believe it or not, the Alabama-Tennessee football rivalry used to be about football. It was the kind of rivalry people wrote books about. In The Third Saturday in October, the late Al Browning wrote of two proud institutions that would use this game as the ultimate measuring stick of their respective programs. Coach [Bear] Bryant always believed that if we beat Tennessee, then we might be good enough to win the SEC championship or the national championship, said Alabama athletics director Mal Moore, who has been a part of more than 30 Alabama-Tennessee games as a player, coach or administrator. He had a great deal of respect for Tennessee. Oh, how times have changed. There has been a lot of discussion this week about the 87th meeting between Alabama and Tennessee on Saturday in Knoxville. But it's not coming from players, coaches and fans. It's coming from lawyers. That's because this historic rivalry has taken on a meaner and harsher edge. The bad blood between Tennessee and Alabama during the past few years has spawned at least three lawsuits and two federal indictments. The battle lines are clearly drawn. Alabama's proud football program is in a competitive hole, and a significant portion of the Crimson Tide fan base is convinced that Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer conspired with NCAA investigators to put it there. They believe Fulmer gave false and misleading information about Alabama to the NCAA in exchange for the NCAA's turning a blind eye to transgressions in the Tennessee program. Montgomery attorney Tommy Gallion says he will prove it when his $60 million lawsuit against the NCAA goes to trial next June. Gallion is representing two former Alabama assistant coaches Ronnie Cottrell and Ivy Williams who say their careers have been ruined by the investigaton. Fulmer is not a defendant in the case, but Gallion vows to make Fulmer sit down for a deposition. Suing the NCAA is like suing the Vatican, but win or lose the truth will come out about Phillip Fulmer's involvement in this case and how he worked with the NCAA to get Alabama, Gallion said. All we want from Phillip Fulmer is the truth. Fulmer said he simply did what he is required to do by NCAA regulations. He determined that an institution, in this case Alabama, was violating the rules and turned that information over to the NCAA. In fact, Fulmer was one of several people who turned in the Tide during the most recent case, which, on Feb. 1, 2002, resulted in a two-year ban on postseason play and the loss of 21 scholarships over three years. As a result, Fulmer has become Public Enemy No. 1 in Alabama. Things got so bad that in July, he refused to cross the state line and come to Birmingham for the annual preseason football meetings because Gallion had threatened to subpoena him. Alabama fans skewered Fulmer on the talk shows, and some of the state's media outlets called him a coward. It's all hogwash, said Jeff Hagood, Fulmer's longtime attorney. Mr. Gallion uses emotion to make his case, but we have the truth. The truth is that coaches have been fired, the university [of Alabama] has accepted its responsibility for cheating and has been punished. And one of Alabama's prominent boosters [Logan Young] has been indicted on federal racketeering charges. That is the truth. Fulmer, who has an 8-2-1 record against Alabama in 11 years as coach, said he has not been bothered by the criticism. Frankly, I never think about it or talk about it unless somebody asks me about it, Fulmer said. I know where we stand on this whole thing, and I know what we have done here is right. Alabama fans would beg to disagree. The Crimson Tide's bowl ban ended last season, but it may be a long time before the Alabama football program recovers from the effects of the sanctions. The Crimson Tide is under its fourth head coach in as many years. The Tide, which went 4-9 last season, is 5-2 going into Saturday's game with Tennessee. Alabama will be favored in only one game of its remaining four with Tennessee, Mississippi State, LSU and Auburn. In short, it could be a long time before Alabama, which has won more SEC championships (21) than any other school, is able to win another title. For that, the fans who call Paul Finebaum's Birmingham radio show blame only one man Fulmer. Most clear-thinking Alabama fans ackowledge that wrong doing was done in the football program, said Finebaum, who hosts the most popular show in the state. But the severity of the punishment is what they question, especially given some of the things that they hear went on at Tennessee. They believe Fulmer was obsessed with getting Alabama and had help from the NCAA. There is no question that they really hate Fulmer. The University of Alabama, for its part, wants to move on. Short story...I was doing some contracting work in Huntsville today and was talking to one of my Bama pals when a guy that I knew came by wearing this ugly-ass orange polo shirt with the Tennessee logo on the front. I said man what are you doing wearing that ugly shirt? We laughed about it and talked about the game a few seconds, then went about our business. Later this afternoon I saw the UT guy again and he had _changed_ shirts (was now wearing a yellow polo, no lie). I asked what happened to that UT shirt you had on this morning, he laughed a nervous laugh and said it was just too hot so he changed. [RollTideFan] Good Start to the Weekend
Alabama 3, Georgia 1 With a 3-1 win over Georgia Friday night in the final SEC home game of the season, the Alabama (9-8-0, 5-4-0 SEC) soccer team clinched its first appearance in the SEC tournament since 1998. This is a big win for us because it came with a little pressure, said Alabama head coach Don Staley. We answered the call tonight and that shows the character of this team. The win came on the strength of Kylie Boyd's three second half goals and two assists from the team's leading scorer Jordan O'Banion. For Boyd, it was her first collegiate Hat Trick and the first for Alabama since September 30, 2003. With Georgia (4-8-4, 2-5-2 SEC) leading 1-0 in the second half, Boyd and O'Banion hooked up for the first time at 63:48 to tie the game up at 1-1. Nine minutes later, O'Banion redirected the ball to Boyd again who found the back of the net for the second time and put Alabama on top for good. Then, just for good measure, at 79:24 Boyd added her third goal of the game and seventh on the year to complete the Hat Trick. Alabama's Suzanne Baker sent the ball into the Georgia zone and Libby Probst gave chase. Probst was then able to position herself for a good angle to make the cross-field pass to Boyd for the goal. For Probst it was her team-leading sixth assist on the season. The 3-1 win for Alabama is the second consecutive victory over Georgia and third straight win overall. It marks the first time since 1997 that the Tide has won three consecutive SEC games. After starting the year 1-3 in the SEC, Alabama has now won four of its last five games in the conference to clinch a spot in the SEC tournament. This team knows what's ahead of it, said Staley. They don't get too low or too high. We've been able to take every game just one step at a time. I think our staff has learned something from this team and I think the girls have learned something from us too. That's how we've been able to build this year. Georgia's Marilee Eback put the Bulldogs on top 1-0 in the first half with a beautiful goal from 35 yards out. Eback placed the ball perfectly in the top left corner of the net, just out of the reach of Alabama goal keeper Laura Lowman. That was a heck of a goal, said Staley Alabama was presented with a number of chances the rest of the first half to tie the game up before halftime, but the Tide was just off the mark. Alabama had a season high eight corner kicks in the first half and 11 on the night. But it wasn't until the second half that the Tide converted on its chances. Alabama entered the night knowing it needed to win one of its final three conference games to qualify for the tournament. Now with two games left to play against rivals Tennessee and Auburn, the Tide can now play for seeding in the tournament. Currently Alabama sits in second place in the SEC West behind Auburn.
