Fulmer Wants Protection From Deposition
By ELIZABETH A. DAVIS
AP Sports Writer
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer wants a
judge to postpone or bar a deposition that was set for next month
and intended only "for the purposes of harassment and annoyance,"
his attorneys said.
If a deposition is held, Fulmer wants the questions restricted
to relevant topics to protect him from "annoyance, embarrassment,
oppression and undue burden and expense," according to a motion
filed Friday and obtained Monday by The Associated Press.
The American Football Coaches Association and the NCAA filed a
lawsuit in March against a former Alabama recruit and Tennessee
player and his mother after they threatened to sue Fulmer over
statements he made to NCAA investigators about them.
Attorneys for Kenny Smith and his mother, Vicki Smith Dagnan,
filed a notice in Knox County Chancery Court scheduling Fulmer's
deposition for Nov. 10, a bye week for the Volunteers.
But Fulmer does not want to be deposed.
"The true purpose of the noticed deposition is to gather
information with respect to a lawsuit pending in Alabama and to
harass and annoy coach Fulmer," according to the motion.
The AFCA, NCAA and Fulmer want a judge to rule that coaches are
protected from litigation based on statements they make to NCAA
investigators.
The Smiths do not believe the law provides special protection
for coaches.
They filed a defamation lawsuit against Fulmer in Alabama, but
it was dismissed last summer for lack of jurisdiction.
The Smiths' attorneys in Alabama are also representing two
former Crimson Tide assistant coaches suing the NCAA for being
implicated in recruiting violations uncovered at the university.
Those attorneys say Fulmer conspired with the NCAA to damage the
Alabama football program.

Alabama does not plan to apply for the medical hardship

Croyle redshirted in 2001 and played three games this

[RollTideFan] Bama leads nation in three defensive categories

2004-10-25 Thread Jeff Todd

UA Media Relations
October 24, 2004

TUSCALOOSA -- The Alabama defense, coming off an
impressive performance at No. 11 Tennessee on Saturday,
now leads the nation in three defensive categories,
including total defense, passing defense and pass
efficiency defense.
Alabama led the nation in passing defense and pass
efficiency defense and remained in the top spot after
its performance at Tennessee. The Crimson Tide ranked
third in total defense entering the UT game, but after
holding the Vols to 195 total yards leaped over NC State
and Wisconsin into the top spot.

Through eight games, Alabama has allowed just 221.6
yards per games en route to a 5-3 overall record. The
Crimson Tide had allowed just 106.6 passing yards per
game and opponents have compiled an 83.3 rating this
season.

In addition, Alabama leads the SEC with the lowest third
down conversion percentage as opponents have made just
22.8 percent (23-for-101) of their third downs this
season.

The Crimson Tide held Tennessee tojust 195 total yards
in Saturday's 17-13 loss at Knoxviille. Tennessee
entered the game averaging more than 400 yards per game.
UT is the third straight opponent with less than 200
total yards. Overall, Bama has held five opponents below
200 yards this year.

Tennessee managed just 132 passing yards in the win over
Alabama, the seventh straight opponent to pass for less
than 200 yards against UA this season. Utah State (205)
is the only team to break the 200-yard barrier through
the air this season. The Bama defense also held UT to 63
rushing yards (on 34 attempts), marking the fourth time
this season an opponent had failed to rush for 100 yards
against UA.

Junior linebacker DeMeco Ryans (Bessemer) recorded his
first career interception as he picked off an Erik Ainge
pass at the UT 4-yard line with 7:48 left in first
quarter.

Senior linebacker Cornelius Wortham (Calhoun City,
Miss.) added his first career interception as he picked
off an Ainge pass at the Alabama two-yard line in the
third quarter. Alabama has at least one interception in
six of the eight games this season.

The UA linebackers had 21 total tackles and two
interceptions in the loss at Tennessee.

On offense, Alabama continues to lead the SEC with 226
rushing yards per game despite only 105 yards in the
loss at UT. Senior Ray Hudson continues to lead the SEC
with 106.3 rushing yards per game, while sophomore
Kenneth Darby ranks fifth with 91.6 yards per game.

Alabama also leads the SEC in time of possession (33:59)
for the third straight week.

And for the third straight week, Alabama leads the
nation with a 32.6 kickoff return average.

The Alabama coaching staff named Kenneth Darby
(offense), DeMeco Ryans (defense) and Brian Bostick
(special teams) as its players of the week for the
Tennessee game.

RE: [RollTideFan] Zook Fired.

2004-10-25 Thread Joel Perry
Although I think the MSU win was a fluke, brings up an interesting topic.

Bama fans, in general, know that we have a lot of injuries that may be
keeping us from winning some games. And we are having to play above our
heads also. But what does the typical fan think if, for some insane reason,
MSU comes in here and beats Bama in two weeks?

A loss to UT, Auburn and even LSU is some-what understandable. But a loss to
MSU won't be easily explained away as simply lack of depth or injury
related. We've been banking on the MSU game as our ticket to a low-tier
bowl. With MSU's win over FLA, as flukey as it was, the possibility of them
having the will-to-win against Bama is more prevalent now than it was two
weeks ago. The Bama-MSU game wwas going to be emotional for MSU anyway, but
this win (and MAYBE a win over UK) will give them enough confidence to just
walk into T-Town and walk out with a win.

As they walk out, so may our bowl hopes. Unless we can pull out a win
against LSU (a maybe at best) or Auburn (I hope our bowl chances don't come
down to this game).

Thanks Jamie. Didn't think State would win another this year. There's a
decent chance of swinging into Bryant-Denny with a two-game winning streak.
(Kentucky is this weekend.)
