[RollTideFan] QB Problems?

2004-11-01 Thread Rick Mc.
Bama's not the only traditional school with QB issues. Take a look at
Big Red's problems...

--
Nebraska QB Joe Dailey
Dailey has been here before, but he continues to have problems with the
Nebraska offense. Even so, he's going to be the starting quarterback of
the Big XII North champion. After a four of 18 for 25-yard performance
in the 24-3 win over Missouri, Dailey has completed seven of 30 passes
(23%) for 141 yards over the last two games. On the year, Dailey has
completed 98 of 202 passes for 1,415 yards and 14 touchdowns with 13
interceptions.
--

:(
Maybe this week's MSU game will be the one when Spence turns it around,
regains his confidence and plays the way I saw him play a couple of
years ago in an A-Day game. It wasn't that long ago that Spencer looked
strong at the QB position.

[RollTideFan] A Playmaker...

2004-11-01 Thread Rick Mc.
Sorta continues our conversation from last night...

Prothro has potential to produce
The problem is Alabama's QBs have had a hard time getting him the football
http://www.al.com/alabama/huntsvilletimes/index.ssf?/base/sports/1099304138287270.xml
Monday, November 01, 2004
By PAUL GATTIS
Times Sports Staff [EMAIL PROTECTED]
TUSCALOOSA - You can almost hear the wheels of creativity grinding each
week, the Alabama coaching staff ceaselessly trying to unite playmaking
receiver Tyrone Prothro with the football.

The problem is that a playmaking receiver is fairly useless without a
quarterback who can deliver him the ball to make those plays in the
first place.

Sort of like the dilemma the Crimson Tide has been facing since losing
quarterback Brodie Croyle to a knee injury in September.

I always enjoy getting my hands on the ball because it lets me do what
I know I can do, Prothro said. At the level I'm at, it's very exciting.

It's exciting for Prothro to have the ball in his hands. And it's
exciting for Alabama for Prothro to have the ball in his hands.

Still, it seems to happen about as often as the Red Sox win the World
Series.

The problems have been numerous.
First, Prothro was slowed early in the season with a sore ankle that
limited his effectiveness. Then Croyle went down and the Tide's passing
game has completed by far the fewest passes in the SEC this season (91,
which is 16 fewer than 11th-place Arkansas) and ranks 113th nationally.

Finally, it's become apparent to opponents that Alabama needs to
incorporate Prothro into the offense more.

It all adds up to these modest numbers for the 5-foot-8 sophomore from
Heflin: 15 receptions in eight games for 192 yards and a touchdown.

We want to get him the ball, Alabama coach Mike Shula said. But teams
know that, too.

So the Tide has tried unconventional approaches to allow Prothro to see
the ball more frequently.

He's returning kickoffs - including one for 100 yards against Kentucky -
and his average of 35.4 yards per return would be good enough to lead
the nation.

But, as a testimony to his underused season, he hasn't had enough
returns to qualify.

The reverse to Prothro has become a staple in the Tide offense. Alabama
has run the Prothro reverse in four of the last five games and will
probably run it again Saturday against Mississippi State.

Right now, that's a play they have for me, Prothro said.
There's even been chatter among fans about the idea of lining Prothro up
at quarterback as a second-generation David Palmer - the former Tide
receiver who found a niche taking the snap directly in short-yardage
situations.

But it's not going to happen.
To me, it probably takes so long, Shula said. If you do it, you've
really got to work on it. We're still working on some things with (the
other quarterbacks) that we're trying to get better at.

Indeed, the thing about Prothro is that he's a race car who, in the
current state of the Tide offense, is left sitting in the garage.
Occasionally, the engine revs but it seldom goes anywhere.

And, yes, Prothro wishes it were different. But he's not complaining.
It has been frustrating, he said. Whatever we've got to do to help
the team win, that's what I'm for. Our whole receiving group, we're not
selfish at all. Whatever we've got to do to win, that's what we're going
to do.

He caught 16 passes in nine games last year as a true freshman despite
being well down the pecking order of receivers. Prothro averaged 11.9
yards per catch.

This year, however, he's caught only one pass in four of Alabama's eight
games and two passes in three of the others.

Not until the Tide's last game - the 17-13 loss at Tennessee - did
Prothro become a prominent part of the offense.

He caught five passes against the Vols for 71 yards - more than twice as
many receiving yards as he's had in any game this season.

So all that's left for Prothro is to hope that he and quarterback
Spencer Pennington are finally starting to find a rhythm together.

I think we are, each game and each practice, Prothro said. The more
we practice together, the more confidence he's going to have in me and
the more confidence I'm going to have in him.

Re: [RollTideFan] QB Problems?

2004-11-01 Thread Jason Houston
It's called hyperbole...sarcasm to make a point. I'll point it out from now
on.

Spencer, to my recollection, has never been a very good QB. He was a
baseball player at Fayette who committed to MSU before changing his mind and
deciding to come to Alabama when Fran brought promises of an option offense
to the Capstone. He was tutored at that time by the brilliant (sarcasm) Les
Koenning, who is famous for molding great passers Andrew Zow and Tyler Watts
(sarcasm.) He may have looked good in some scrimmages. Hell, he probably
looks good in practice at times also. But that's slightly different
(sarcasm) from making great throws against Tennessee et al.

So now we're complaining that he has in the past looked strong, but now he
sucks because his position coach isn't decent, laying aside the fact his
HEAD coach was a QB coach in the NFL.

OR, it just might be (sarcasm) that he was THIRD STRING for a reason going
in to the 2004 season, and that he's just not a very good quarterback.

Maybe you'll get your way and we'll fire the architect of the No. 1 defense
in AMERICA and fire Rader so we can find a decent position coach who can
turn Spencer back into the fine quarterback he once was (sarcasm).

And as for your derisive comments directed toward our head coach about the
Prothro package, you might be surprised by the end of the year, given what
I've heard this week.

Gee, thanks!

No, but he's been accused of having potential by more

 He was a

He also played football...QB, I do believe. And he's

normally a pretty good foundation for becoming a decent

No, but he's been accused of having potential by more
 than one coaching staff.

Isn't potential another word for hasn't done crap?

He also played football...QB, I do believe. And he's
also the son of a coach, if I'm not mistaken.

Walden Tucker is the Fayette coach, father of Lance and Luke Tucker. He's
not Spencer's dad. Unless you're referring to him playing for his dad in
junior high or something.

What is this, Pennington's 4th year at BAMA? You'd think he'd
gotten enough coaching by this point to be a dependable
 QB. NOT!

That's illogical. That sentence virtually MAKES the point that the problem
is that he's just not very good, despite having three different coaches.

Jason, when Shula starts coaching QB's at BAMA, get back
with me. In the meantime, as long as that nimrod Dave
Rader is coaching QB's, and coordinating the offense -
 WE ARE FUCKED!

Kind of like how we are with Kines, who is currently trotting out the No. 1
defense in America? It's Shula's offense, not Rader's, and Shula has PLENTY
of input into coaching QB's.

Or, it might be because Shula flipped a fuckin' coin and
 it landed on Guilon.

Sure. Whatever. That sounds like something Huge would throw out.

Alabama hasn't played one single team worth a damn this
season. And when they do, that defense you're bragging
about will get their nuts handed to them.

So the presumptive SEC East champion Tennessee -- at their place -- isn't
worth a damn? Wow. But until your dire predictions of our defense's demise
come true, we're the No. 1 defense in America.

What the hell's come over you? It wasn't that long ago
YOU YORESLEF were just as down on this coaching staff as
 anyone, including myslef.

Because I've seen this team make a lot of progress this season, and I think
the staff is doing a great job under the circumstances. If you recall, in
August I said I expected a 6-5 season and a minor bowl game. That was BEFORE
we lost our starting QB, RB and FB for the SEASON.

I would hope so, considering that Shula will probably
have a month to get ready for a bowl game.

It will come before the bowl game.

No, I won't be a damn bit surprised. It'll be too late,
which will be par for the course.

You're becoming the same type of fan Huge isbitch first -- and often --
cheer later. We've got FAR too many of those in our fan base.
