I don't think SC loses many seniors. I believe only 2 on offense and
maybe
3 on defense. The announcers made mention of the fact during last
night's
game that they have almost all their starters returning on both sides
of
the ball and talked about a possible SC dynasty.

Why is that? It makes me sick to see how poorly Bama has played there in
years past. Can't we get a few practice days in that gym next year that
may help us with our shooting? That was not the team I wanted Bama to be
last night.

It's the only gym I've ever seen where both teams sit at
the end-line. It's impossible to communicate with your
team when they're all 90 feet away from you for at least
1/2 the game.

NASHVILLE | The University of Alabama mens basketball team might want
to think about changing its scheduling policy regarding SEC openers
because the Crimson Tide still hasnt figured out how to win at Memorial
Gymnasium.

Led by guards Mario Moore and Jason Holwerda, who both finished with 16
points, Vanderbilt made 12 3-pointers and never trailed to beat Alabama
70-56 Wednesday night in the SEC opener for both teams.

We played bad. They played good, junior forward Chuck Davis said.
That was the story of the night.

With the convincing victory, Vanderbilt continued its winning ways to
extend three winning streaks at home: 10-0 this season, eight straight
against Alabama (going back to 1990) and 8-0 in SEC openers opposite the
Crimson Tide.

But what was particularly disappointing to Alabama (11-3 overall, 0-1
SEC), ranked No. 19 in the latest Associated Press poll, was its
perimeter defense. Coming in, Vanderbilt led the conference in
3-pointers with 10 per game, and it was no secret how the Commodores
would attack.

We have to get a lot better, coach Mark Gottfried said.
Alabamas transition game also struggled, and seemingly just about every
time Vanderbilt put up a 3-pointer it scored no matter if the initial
shot went in or not thanks to nine offensive rebounds in the first half
alone and an overall rebounding advantage of 41-25.

Starting with Polish senior center Dawid Przybyszewski off the opening
tip, Vanderbilt came out firing and shot 50-percent on its first 19
3-pointers.

We gave up too many 3s, said Alabama forward Kennedy Winston. Were
last in the conference defensively in that, and its killing us right now.

Meanwhile, with Davis picking up two quick fouls, Alabama searched for
another hot hand to complement Winston, who also finished with 16
points, but didnt find it in the backcourt.

Freshman point Ronald Steele was limited to one field goal and two free
throws while senior Earnest Sheltons shooting woes continued on the
road. He finished with eight points, but was 3-for-10 from the field,
giving him a shooting percentage of 30.9 percent (13-for-42) over the
last four games away.

Ive been playing down the last few games, Shelton said. I have to
pick it up.

Runs of 8-3 and 9-2 helped Vanderbilt build a 30-20 lead, but three
inside baskets and three free throws by sophomore forward Jermareo
Davidson, who finished with a team-high 21 points, minimized the damage
until Moore hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions to help the
Commodores open up a 41-29 halftime lead.

From there it got worse for Alabama. Led by Moore, the Commodores
(10-4, 1-0) kept hitting 3-pointers to open the second half with a 16-3
run, and with 14:22 remaining all five Vanderbilt starters were on the
bench.

We tried to do better defensively in the second half, but by then it
was too late, said Davidson, who tied his season best in scoring (at
Charlotte, Dec. 4).

Alabama came back with a 19-4 run and with a 3-point play by Winston
closed to 64-56 with 5:02 remaining but got no closer.

Alabama will be looking to close in on three milestones when it hosts
LSU on Saturday:

-- Gottfried is still two wins shy of career No. 200.
-- Winston needs 11 points for 1,000 career points.
Shelton is 20 points short of passing Gottfried (1985-87) for 34th on
the Alabama all-time scoring list with 1,056 points.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5 p.m., and the game will be televised by Fox
SportsNet.
