Former Bama Kicker Watches His Historic House Burn

POSTED: 2:09 pm CDT August 4, 2005

FLORENCE, Ala. -- A century-old two-story house owned by one of
Alabama's former star football players sustained heavy damage during a
fire in the city's historic district.

Van Tiffin became a part of Crimson Tide folklore when his last-second,
52-yard field goal defeated rival Auburn in 1985. He stood helplessly
yesterday afternoon as he watched firefighters put out the fire.

Tiffin said he and his wife bought the home several months ago and had
been renovating it. The blaze was reported to shortly before noon and
according to firefighters the home is salvageable.

An investigator said the fire apparently started as roofers were
welding the portion of the roof that covers the porch to the roof's
sloped portion.

No one was in the house when the fire started.

One firefighter was treated for apparent heat exhaustion and smoke
inhalation

Eli strikes Gold

By John Wallace
Thursday, August 4, 2005 8:45 PM CDT

Eli Gold lives up to his name in "Crimson Nation."

The "Voice of the Crimson Tide" strikes gold in his new book about
Alabama football.

The newest book regarding the legendary college football program that
is The University of Alabama and its many legendary players and coaches
proves Gold can truly paint a picture with words.

One can almost hear his unique, signature voice telling the tales of
Alabama Crimson Tide glory as they read the history of one of the
winningest college football programs.

"Crimson Nation" (ISBN: 1401601901, $24.95, Rutledge Hill Press) begins
with the birth of football at the Capstone and weaves its way to the
present with a colorful collection of stories helped along by Gold's
in-depth research and insight interviews with former coaches and
players.

The book begins slowly with Gold having to rely on other books, old
newspaper articles and other documents to map out the beginning of
Alabama's football program.

The story bogs down a little in the early going, but once Gold reaches
the 1950s the storyline picks up pace and never slows down.

Pages begin to flip faster as Gold uses his mastery of storytelling
combined with interesting tales and unforgettable quotes from the
people who were there.

"Crimson Nation" really begins to speed along once Gold mentions late
Alabama Head Coach Paul W. "Bear" Bryant's return to the Capstone when
"Mama called."

The book, like the Alabama football program, does not slow down once
the descriptive account of Bear's return to Tuscaloosa and his winning
ways at the University begin to unravel in Gold's smooth, easy-going
but excitable tone.

One of the best parts of the book is Gold's recollection of the 1992
National Championship season. He also adds more than a few
tongue-in-cheek remarks throughout the book within parenthesis to help
set the tone and mood for each story.

The book takes fans from the inception to the present in a enjoyable
manner ending with a promise of more to come. Now is the perfect time
to read this well-written book because it ends with talk of last season
and an up-tempo optimism for 2005 and beyond.

Auburn fans may want to skip "Crimson Nation" after an undefeated 13-0
season in 2004. Alabama fans, however, can rest assured this is one of
many books on Alabama football deserving of a spot in their libraries
or on their coffee table.

If you are an Alabama Crimson Tide fan and can't wait for the 2005
season to begin, do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of "Crimson
Nation."

It's well worth the price and definitely a book every fan should have
in its hardback edition. It'll be a great addition to any library and
want it be nice to have it when Gold updates his personal history of
the Tide with Crimson Nation II?

Of course, one of the reasons I like it so much is because of a great
photo of current Alabama Head Coach Mike Shula and a handsome
photographer standing in the background on page 222 of the hardback
edition.

But, seriously, this is a book by an Alabama fan for Alabama fans. A
book everyone who has ever chanted "Rammer Jammer, Yellow Hammer!" will
enjoy and appreciate.

[RollTideFan] Does Anybody Know About Torn ACL's????

2005-08-05 Thread JVWatts
My daughter came home last night complaining about her knee
hurtingI'm used to it being that she's always been the athletic and
rough and tumble type. She said she hurt it while stretching at band
practice. I didn't notice anything telling about it, but I iced it down
and made her elevate it.
She came home from school today and could hardly walk. I asked her
specifically where it was hurting and she pointed to the muscle, tendon,
ligament, thingy that runs to the back and inside of the kneeI'm
worried this may be an ACL tear

Any advice I've never dealt with that type of injury

NCAA American Indian mascot ban will begin Feb. 1

ESPN.com news services

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA banned the use of American
Indian mascots by sports teams during its postseason
tournaments, but will not prohibit them otherwise.

The NCAA's executive committee decided this week the
organization did not have the authority to bar Indian
mascots by individual schools, committee chairman
Walter Harrison said Friday.

Nicknames or mascots deemed "hostile or abusive" would
not be allowed on team uniforms or other clothing
beginning with any NCAA tournament after Feb. 1, said
Harrison, the University of Hartford's president.

"What each institution decides to do is really its own
business" outside NCAA championship events, Harrison
said.

"What we are trying to say is that we find these
mascots to be unacceptable for NCAA championship
competition," he added.

At least 18 schools have mascots the NCAA deem
"hostile or abusive," including Florida State's
Seminole and Illinois' Illini. The full list of
schools was not immediately released.

Not all schools with Indian-related nicknames are on
that list. NCAA officials said some schools using the
Warrior nickname do not use Indian symbols and would
not be affected.

North Carolina-Pembroke, which uses the nickname
Braves, will not face sanctions. NCAA president Myles
Brand explained said the school's student body has
historically admitted a high percentage of American
Indians and more than 20 percent of the students are
American Indians.

Schools on the list could still appeal.

"I suspect that some of those would like to having a
ruling on that," Brand said. "But unless there is a
change before Feb. 1, they will have to abide by it."

Major college football teams also would not be
subjected to the new rules because there is no NCAA
Divsion I-A tournament or playoff.

Vernon Bellecourt, president of the National Coalition
on Racism in Sports and Media, was pleased with the
postseason ban but had hoped for even stronger action.

"We would have hoped the NCAA would have provided the
moral leadership on this issue, but obviously they've
chosen to only go halfway," said Bellecourt, a member
of the Anishinabe-Ojibwe Nation in Minnesota.

The NCAA two years ago recommended that schools
determine for themselves whether the Indian depictions
were offensive.

Florida State, for example, has received permission
from the Seminole tribe in Florida to use the
nickname. That, however, will not suffice.

"Other Seminole tribes are not supportive," said
Charlotte Westerhaus, the NCAA vice president for
diversity and inclusion.

At the University of North Dakota, where the Fighting
Sioux nickname has come under fire, officials said
they wanted to study the decision before commenting.

"We just don't have enough information to know exactly
what it means," said Phil Harmeson, a senior associate
to school president Charles Kupchella.

The NCAA plans to ban schools using Indian nicknames
from hosting postseason events. Harrison said schools
with such mascots that have already been selected as
tournament sites would be asked to cover any offensive
logos.

Such logos also would be prohibited at postseason
games on cheerleader and band uniforms starting in
2008.

Among the schools to change nicknames in recent years
over such concerns were St. John's (from Redmen to Red
Storm) and Marquette (from Warriors to Golden Eagles).

Fourteen schools have removed all references to Native
American culture or were deemed not to have references
to Native American culture as part of their athletics
programs: California State-Stanislaus, Lycoming
College, Winona State University, Hawaii-Manoa,
Eastern Connecticut State, East Stroudsburg, Husson
College, Merrimack College, Southeast Missouri State,
State University of West Georgia, Stonehill College,
San Diego State, Wisconsin Lutheran College and the
University of North Carolina-Pembroke.

The College of William and Mary has been given an
extension to complete its self-study on the mascot
issue.

Other measures approved this week include stronger
penalties for schools that repeatedly fall below the
NCAA's new academic cutline. Harrison said schools
would receive a warning letter the first year;
restrictions on scholarships, recruiting and playing
time the second year; and a postseason ban the third
year. If a school fails to meet the standard four
consecutive years, all teams at that school would be
ineligible for postseason play.

"I'd fully expect that we never get to the fourth
year," Harrison said. "A school should take stronger
action before that. But I think this should send a
message that there will be real, serious consequences
if you don't."

Schools also would receive a bonus point if a player
returns to school to compl

That's just idiotic. The NCAA is offensive, maybe we could ban them.
Perhaps it is time to pull out of the NCAA and go our own way. Even though
