2004-07-17 Thread Jeff Todd

If you want the latest on freshmen updates, season ticket sales for some teams, verbal
commitments, late
signees, player improvements, an active police blotter and what the BCS commissioners
have done to either
confuse or simplify the poll, you have come to the right place. All this and more is
in this week's
edition of the roundup.

LSU: Tiger officials have sold 65,000 season tickets, an all-time high. Less than 50
season tickets remain
for the 2004 season. Jerrell Powe (6-3, 322), a defensive tackle from Wayne County
High in Waynesboro,
Mississippi is favoring Auburn, LSU, West Virginia, Alabama and Tennessee.
(Tigerbait.com)

OLE MISS: Signee Larry Kendrick said he is academically eligible and will go to Oxford
this week. Rumors
spread after he was photographed wearing Florida Gator apparel while attending an
informal workout in
Gainesville. Kendrick was visiting his cousin Tony Joiner, who plays for the Gators.
J. D. Lawhorn (6-1,
175) a receiver from Memphis, Tennessee has committed to Ole Miss. (RebelGrove.com)

MISSISSIPPI STATE: Last season, Bulldog fans brought 32,000 season tickets and are on
pace to exceed that
total this year. The record is 37,000 for a single year. Sophomore cornerback Quinton
Culberson said he is
close to being back to full strength after recovering from a broken leg. Last season,
he was the first
true freshman to start for the Bulldogs since 1986. (BulldogBlitz.com)

GEORGIA: After losing Ben Watson and Robert Brannon, Leonard Pope is ready to step up
at tight end. He
weighs 255 pounds and plans on playing at 265. Signee Thomas Brown is taking part in
informal workouts
mostly at running back. Kade Weston (6-6, 315), a defensive tackle from Red Bank, N.
J., camped at Georgia
this past week. He did say that Georgia would be one of his official visits. Weston is
the No. 79 overall
prospect for Rivals.com. Quarterback David Greene is one of 42 players on the Davey
O'Brien award watch
list. Defensive end Will Thompson is hoping to have a big season after breaking his
ankle, his fibula and
tearing ligaments last season in two-a-days. Defensive lineman Marcus Jackson, who is
suffering from a
blood clot near his brain, has been contacted by former Bulldog player David Jacobs,
who had his career
cut short by a stroke. (UGASports.com)

SOUTH CAROLINA: Guard Stephen Sene and receiver Derrick Harper have been dismissed
from the team due to
academics. Sene (6-6, 320) played in 10 games last season and was in the three-guard
rotation. His absence
means senior Jonathan Alston and sophomore Chris White are likely starters at guard.
Harper, a redshirt
freshman, was suspended for spring practice because of poor classroom attendance and a
broken hand. (The
State) Dwight Alexander (6-5, 300), an offensive lineman from Carencro High in
Lafayette, La., has offers
from South Carolina, Indiana and Louisiana-Lafayette. He said LSU and Auburn are also
recruiting him.
(GamecockCentral.com)

TENNESSEE: Offensive lineman Jason Respert, a senior this season, has overcome two
major surgeries on his
ankle and shoulder that temporarily derailed his football career. He has started in
only 10 games in his
career, but is hoping this is a big year for him. Respert has behaved himself since
pleading no contest to
misdemeanor charges of battery and trespassing during a recruiting visit to Florida.
(Tennessean) James
Davis (6-0, 207), a running back from Atlanta, Ga., said the Vols are in his top three
schools along with
Alabama and Clemson. (Volquest.com)

FLORIDA: O. J. Murdock, a receiver from Tampa (Fla.) Middleton, made a favorable
impression at the Florida
football camp this past weekend. He said Florida is his leader followed by FSU and
Miami. Murdock runs a
4.34 in the 40-yard dash and has a 37- inch vertical leap. After camping at UF and
FSU, Murdock is going
to run in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 4x100 in the Junior Olympics in Iowa. After
the Rising Seniors
Camp was done this weekend, four invitees--Demetrice Morley (6-0, 170), a defensive
back from Miami
Killian; Avery Atkins (6-0, 195) a defensive back from Daytona Beach Mainland;
Vladimir Richard (6-4, 155)
a defensive lineman from Sunrise Piper and Gerald Williams (6-4, 226), a defensive
lineman from Lauderdale
Lakes (Fla.) Boyd Anderson-committed to the Gators. Florida has five verbal
commitments. Bryan Evans (6-0,
175), a cornerback from Ed White in Jacksonville, was rumored to have committed, but
he has not.
(Gatorbait.net)

ALABAMA: The Tide has added a late signee to the 2004 recruiting class in Jeffrey
Dukes (6-3, 190), a free
safety from Northwest Mississippi Community College. He had 61 tackles and four picks
last season as a
freshman for Coach Bobby Franklin. Dukes will report to Alabama on Sunday. A late
qualifier in 2003, Dukes
was able to go to a four-year school without having to obtain a two-year degree first.

In this week's roundup, we take a look at the marquee game in the
South between Georgia and LSU for the SEC title. We also review some of
the team's waiting on bowl invitations and other schools who have ended
their seasons. Verbal commitments are continuing to come in and coaching
changes are plentiful. Enjoy another edition of the college football
roundup.

GEORGIA VS. LSU IN THE SEC TITLE GAME: The win over Georgia Tech gave
the Bulldogs 10 wins for the second straight season. They are 23-3 in
the past two seasons. Tailback Michael Cooper left the Tech game after
an ankle injury. He is questionable for LSU. Cornerback Bruce Thornton
sprained his right thumb, but he will play despite the injury and a case
of the flu. Billy Bennett scored 10 points, giving him 392 in his
career. Bryan McClendon blocked a punt. Georgia intercepted three
passes. Tech ran 19 more plays and had 60 more yards. The Dawgs got to
quarterback Reggie Ball forcing a pick and two fumbles before he left
with a possible concussion before halftime. Bulldog running backs have
one fumble this season. The running game had 106 yards on 38 carries
(Kregg Lumpkin had 64 yards on 14 carries. David Greene was 16-of-22 for
235 yards and one score. Fred Gibson had three catches for 96 yards.
Jeremy Thomas had five catches for 51 yards. The defense allowed 146
yards rus
hing on 41 carries. Tech backup quarterback A. J. Suggs threw for 175
yards and two scores. Georgia has beaten Tech three straight times.
Georgia can become the first SEC school to win consecutive SEC titles
since Tennessee in 1997-98. Mark Richt said he had no interest in the
Nebraska opening. Richt has a buyout of $8.4 million. Georgia athletic
director Vince Dooley was hospitalized early Tuesday morning with a
gastric ulcer. He went home Thursday. Guard Bartley Miller, who has
missed the last three games with a sore shoulder, was expected to play,
until he sprained his ankle Wednesday. He is doubtful for the game.

The Tigers are No 1 in scoring defense allowing 10.5 ppg and Georgia
is No. 2 allowing 11.8 ppg. LSU leads the SEC in rush defense, pass
efficiency defense, total defense, net punting, punt return and pass
efficiency. LSU is No. 2 nationally in total defense trailing only No. 1
Oklahoma and No. 3 in rush defense, trailing only Ohio State and
Southern California. LSU leads the SEC averaging 35 points per game and
Georgia is No. 7 scoring 27 points per game. Georgia leads the SEC in
turnover margin and pass defense. LSU leads the SEC in sacks with 33 and
Georgia has allowed more sacks than any SEC team with 38.

LSU held Arkansas to 201 yards rushing, 40 below their average. Tiger
coach Nick Saban wants to change the Arkansas game from a Friday to
Saturday. E. J. Kuale, a junior college linebacker from Dodge City
(Kan.) Community College had verbally committed to LSU. He is originally
from Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland and signed with Georgia Tech in 2001
according to TigerBait.com. In the win over Arkansas, the Hogs scored
more than 19 points against LSU, the first team to do so all season.
Tiger quarterback Matt Mauck was 12-of-19 for 186 yards and four scores,
tying his career high. Freshman tailback Justin Vincent rushed for 112
yards and two scores. LSU recovered three fumbles and picked off two
passes by Corey Webster. Cedric Cobbs gained 169 yards including 112 in
the first 17 minutes. Tiger defensive lineman Chad Lavalais has been
named as the one of the finalists for the Outland Trophy. In the win
over Georgia earlier in the season, receiver Michael Clayton, the
leading re
ceiver in the SEC with 69 catches for 960 yards and nine scores, caught
only two passes for 23 yards because he was blanketed by Georgia
cornerback Bruce Thornton. Saban is the first coach to win four straight
years at LSU since Charlie McClendon, who had winning seasons in his
final years from 1976-79. Only four players from former coach Gerry
DiNardo's tenure played this year-tight end Eric Edwards, punter Donnie
Jones, offensive tackle Rodney Reed and defensive tackle Bryce Wyatt.
LSU's seven wins in the SEC were the most in school history.

FLORIDA is bound for the Outback Bowl to play either Purdue or Iowa.
Last year, Florida lost to Michigan in the Outback Bowl. Ciatrick Fason
had 21 yards on eight carries and Ran Carton had 62 yards on 13 carries
in the loss to FSU. Cornerback Keiwan Ratliff scored his fourth
non-offensive touchdown of the season after he returned a Chris Rix 77
yards for a score. Chris Leak had a career-high 273 yards on 36
attempts. Ben Troupe caught four passes for 121 yards and two
receptions. Jeremy Foley, the UF athletic director, asked SEC
commissioner Mike Slive to call ACC commissioner John Swofford about the
officiating in the FSU game. There were at least five plays involving
possible fumbles in the game that went FSU's way that were
controversial. Reserve quarterback Ingle Martin has been granted his
release and will transfer to Furman,

College Football Roundup by Brent Beaird

Teams are ready to put the pads on soon. In this week's roundup, we have
more news on practice updates, players who qualified and those who did
not, position changes, television schedules, impressive freshmen and
much more.

Alabama senior linebacker Brooks Daniels, who quit the team last week
for medical reasons, has not had a redshirt year, so he could return
next season. Sophomore DeMeco Ryans or redshirt freshman Juwan Garth
will compete for his job. Fullback signee LeRon McClain is still waiting
on the results of his state exit exam. A. C. Carter is back working out
after sitting out last year with a leg injury according to
BamaOnline.com. Freshmen receivers Tyrone Prothro and Matt Caddell have
drawn compliments from coach Mike Shula. Alabama picked up a verbal
commitment from Nikita Stover (6-1, 190), a receiver from Hartselle
(Ala.) according to BOL. He had 11 scholarship offers. He is the
nation's No. 7 receiver prospect according to Rivals.com. Linebacker
Juke King has made significant progress in recovery from knee surgery.
He is listed as a backup to strongside linebacker Cornelius Wortham
according to the Mobile Register. Defensive lineman Ahmad Childress has
lost 30 pounds and is down to 328 while offensive guard Dennis Alexander
has dropped 40 pounds and is now weighing 325. Last year's kickers
Michael Ziifle and Mike McLaughlin are not on the 105- man roster. The
kickers are Kyle Robinson, Brian Bostick, Gabe Giardina and Jamie
Christensen.

Georgia freshman offensive lineman James Lee is set to undergo shoulder
surgery and will redshirt according to the Athens Banner-Herald.
Receivers Fred Gibson (up 20 pounds to over 200), Damien Gary, and
Reggie Brown impressed onlookers the first day. Freshmen defensive backs
Thomas Flowers, Mikey Henderson and Paul Oliver could see early playing
time because cornerbacks DeMario Minter, Tim Jennings, and B. J. Fields
are suspended for the opener against Clemson. Freshman linebacker Danny
Verdun has changed his name to Danny Verdun-Wheeler. Mark Richt said no
players are in danger of being academically ineligible. The players put
on pads Saturday. Georgia is depending a lot on 11 seniors for
leadership after losing 21 seniors from last year. Freshman running back
Kregg Lumpkin (has lost 14 pounds down to 206) has already caught
Richt's eye. Other freshmen who drew praise from the coach are receivers
Sean Bailey and T. J. Gartrell, offensive lineman Fernando Velasco and
tight end Leonard Pope. Freshman Coleman Watson has been moved from
tight end to offensive tackle. One of the big surprises of camp has been
redshirt freshman receiver Cedric Haywood. School officials and Richt
have agreed to an eight-year contract that includes a $1.5 million
buyout for each year on the contract through 2007 plus an $800,000
buyout for each of the years from 2008-10 according to the AJC. Richt is
now the third highest paid coach in the SEC. His $1.5 million per year
puts him behind only Tennessee's Phil Fulmer at $1.65 million and LSU's
Nick Saban's $ 1.6 million.

Florida receiver Reggie Vickers is no longer on the team according to
the Gainesville Sun. Vickers, who hurt his knee last summer, has fallen
behind in school. Meanwhile, Mo Mitchell is staying at defensive
tackle. Freshman punter Eric Wilbur has a staph infection in his knee,
but should be able to practice in a few days.

Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville said freshman Courtney Denson, who is from
Miami, will make an impact this season. Although he was a quarterback in
high school, he could fill a need at cornerback or kick returner. For
the first time since Tuberville has come to Auburn, the entire roster is
made up of his recruits. The NCAA Clearinghouse has denied the
certification of freshman linebacker Montavian Collier. Freshmen
offensive linemen King Dunlap and Jarrod Britt could have an opportunity
to work into the two-deep rotation. Offensive lineman Monreko Crittenden
has lost 25 pounds and is 335 pounds starting fall drills according to
the Mobile Register. Junior college defensive back signee David Irons
will not enroll after failing to qualify. Instead, he will attend a
junior college. Freshman quarterback Kelcy Luke has requested a redshirt
season. There is a real battle for the No. 2 quarterback slot between
freshmen Josh Sullivan and Brandon Cox.

Mississippi State outside linebacker Jason Clark could get a look at
defensive end according to the Clarion Ledger. Defensive tackle Kamau
Jackson is waiting to hear about his eligibility from the NCAA. Last
week, a NCAA administrative review sub-committee denied a waiver
submitted by the school. Coach Jackie Sherrill said he will decide by
Aug. 18 who will start at quarterback between senior Kevin Fant and
sophomore Kyle York. Freshman quarterback Omarr Conner is still waiting
word on whether of not his ACT score is valid according to the Ledger.
