Let's see, also, Edwin Meese ("people wouldn't be arrested unless there were guilty"),
John Ashcroft, Jefferson Beauregard Sessions, Richard Shelby, Roy Moore, all but
maybe one of the "Supremes"the list goes on ad nauseum. Believe me, the number
of "conservative" lawyers far outweighs the number of those dedicated to the
preservation and enforcement of the Bill of Rights. When you is the minority, you must
holler louder.

FIRST: If he is getting soft in his old age, that is a matter strictly between Merle,
his wife and their doctor. Sheesh, it is tough being a public figure

Second: I think Merle is not expressing anything but the way he is/am. He believes in
the right to do so as long as you are not harming the common man/American soldier as
was often happening in the 60's.

Merle is a pearl. I love his music and respect him even if you do notnever thought
I'd see the day Merle Haggard was accused of being a liberal..BWAHH! Gee, if
that ain't a social commentary..just wonder which way it cuts.

[RollTideFan] Merle's new song/Dixie Chicks comment

2003-07-26 Thread SAR
ol' Merle cuts both waysthis article about his newest single supporting the
fighting mens and womens in Iraq (hey, what about Afghanistan, or have you
forgotten?) ($1 to Slef) and a comment about the Dixie Chicks comment stating they
were ashamed that President Bush was from their home state of Texas...

New Merle Haggard critical of Iraq policy
Friday, July 25, 2003 Posted: 11:55 AM EDT (1555 GMT)

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) -- A new Merle Haggard song that's critical of the media's
coverage of the war in Iraq is garnering so much attention that it's being rushed to
thousands of radio stations around the country, a spokesman for the country singer
said Thursday.

"We're mailing it out as we speak," Tom Thacker, vice president of Hag Records, said
of the song "That's the News." "It's going to a broad range of stations."

Thacker said the song has generated interest from media and fans.

"It's another one of Merle Haggard's social commentaries," he said. "This time it's
kind of opposed to the tone of 'The Fightin' Side of Me.' "

That 1970 song was a pro-America anthem at the height of the Vietnam War.

The new song chides the media for focusing on celebrity news and the death of Laci
Peterson and her unborn child while fighting continues in Iraq.

Haggard sings, "Suddenly it's over, the war is finally done/Soldiers in the desert
sand still clinging to a gun/No one is the winner and everyone must lose/Suddenly the
war's over, that's the news."

The song ends with the lines, "Politicians do all the talking, soldiers pay the
dues/Suddenly the war is over, that's the news."

The single will be included on Haggard's new album, "Haggard Like Never Before," to be
released in October. . <(sigh) (SNIP)(I hate snipping)

the Chicks comment is in the last paragraph of the article.
