http://bcbio.wordpress.com/2010/05/08/automated-build-environment-for-bioinformatics-cloud-images/ You have to get sage into this party - actually I think a friend of mine has done an AMI with sage (+ a comprehensive R environment) But the idea of pulling down the latest build and creating a sage based AMI each release is just bang on... Perhaps there's a collaboration opportunity with these guys. They have some config and build stuff that looks very friendly for customizing the image.
