This has been true in Sage for a long time, and I've always found it
mildly annoying:

$ cd /some/random/directory
$ sage
----------------------------------------------------------------------
| Sage Version 4.2.alpha0, Release Date: 2009-10-16                  |
| Type notebook() for the GUI, and license() for information. |
----------------------------------------------------------------------
sage: pwd
'/some/random/directory'
sage: notebook()

  let the notebook start up, then hit ctrl-c

sage: pwd
'/Users/palmieri/.sage'

How hard would it be to change this?

  John
