Indeed using tarball from another mirror (mirror.koddos.net) lead to a 
successful build, but I had to do the same thing for 2 other packages:
jinja2-2.10.tar.gz
ipython-5.8.0.tar.gz

Is there a way to blacklist a mirror when running make for the first time 
(i.e. after a fresh git clone)? Or, alternatively, is it possible to select 
manually a mirror?

On Debian testing running on Core i7 + 16 GB RAM, upgrading from 8.6.rc1 
(Python 2) builds and passes ptestlong without any problem whatsoever.

On Ubuntu 18.04 running on Xeon E5-2623 + 16 GB RAM, from a fresh git 
clone, python2 build failed due to a checksum error for 
ipython_genutils-0.2.0. 
Running make (-j8) a second time yields the same error + a checksum error 
for  jinja2-2.10.
