Sage 2.10.4 compiled from source worked flawless.

 Any ideas?

Could you consider building from source? This is very easy,
though it takes a few hours of your computer's time. Just
download the source here:
http://sagemath.org/dist/src/
extract and type make.

Of the dozen or so binaries I've posted the above one is the only
Linux binary I didn't personally build, so I'm dubious.

It is a binary compiled by a third party and we can't test it directly
since we do not have access to a GLIBC 2.4 based 32 bit distribution.

Extracting with tar gave me no errors, so I think the file itself is
 not broken.

Looks correct:

It picks up the system's Python.

 System is Kubuntu 7.10.

Sage 2.10.4 compiled from source worked flawless.

 Any ideas?

Well, the binary might be broken. Why it picks up the system's python
is hard to tell. The binary run for the guy who compiled it, but since
I cannot debug a system I do not have access to it is hard to tell.

 Thanks in advance,
 Lars Fischer

Cheers,

Michael
