Thank you all. I found that I was running Ubutu on CD ROM without actually installing Ubuntu using VirtualBox. I installed Ubuntu properly, and memory problem disappeared. I now have sage 3.4.2 installed, which is working well. That said, it would be good if Sage were to do some quick checks at startup and give more useful error messages. E.g., it could easily check that you're on a 64/32-bit computer that corresponds to the binary, and if not issue a helpful error message. Also, it could give a warning if the operating system doesn't match what the binary is for. Hello William, I also have a problem of downloading sage 3.4.2 into Ubuntu (32 bit). I have been trying to install sage into Ubuntu (which was installed by VirtualBox in my laptop with Window vista OS). For #2, it sounds like you are trying to build from source with the binary, which doesn't work. If you download the source and try again it should be OK. While this takes around 2 hours (depending on your machine of course), it does make upgrading easier. I am not sure what is wrong with #1, since I never use the binaries. Probably someone else can help with that. -M.
