Life In Saligao At the Moment And The Present Hindu Community. In most aspects, life in Saligao has not change much. Though modernization has set in, it does not make itself evident. The older generation still walk or cycle to the tintto or market place with walking stick and hat, occasionally stopping to exchange a bit of news or greetings with a fellow villager. In many ways it continues to be a tight community, content to keep the village going amongst themselves with some programmes or the other throughout the year. Activities among the hindus are centered around the new Sri Devi Xervani-Vetal temple and also at Sri Datttawari ( Salmona) and Sri Lakshiminarayan ( Mudddavaddi) and Sri Vetal ( Molebhatt) Temples. Every year the Hindus of the village keep 12th April as the birthday of Sri. Xervani. On the reconstructed temple Shri Xervani-Vetal in Salmona, we read the following inscription in Marathi and is translated as follows: May Goddess Xervani-Vetal bless us. The foundation laying ceremony of this temple was performed on 3-8-1994 at the hands of Dr. Wilfred DSouza, Honourable Chief Minister of the Government of Goa. This re-constructed temple was inaugurated on 12-4-1996. Prayers were offered from 10. 45 a.m. They were attended by Mr. Anant. V. Petkar Salgaokar, the President of Devi- Xervani Panchayatan Sounstha, Salganv-vaddo, Advalpale, Assonora, Goa, who would also run the affairs of the reconstructed temple with its committee, Mr. Mohan Sinai Salgaokar, a Brahmin member of the Sounsthan, Mr. Manohar Balagi Paynik of Asganv, representative of the Saligao settlers hindu community and a sizeable crowd. The puja was performed by a team of bhott( hindu priests)especially brought for this occasion. The inside of the temple is the same pre-Portuguese original structure where one notices a Roin( white ant-hill) covered with a roof. The structure in front of the temple in new. The spot where the temple exists, according to Mr. Anant V. Petkar is called Diulachem Batta. There is also a stage on temple premises. The date 12th April, 1996 is to be celebrated as the birthday of Sri Xervani with big procession every year. The temple was built with the help of Dr. Wilfred D Souza and donations from worshippers. The Deepa Stamba( lamp post) in front of the temple was built by Shirodkar brothers on 18-2-1986 and donated to Xervani-Vetal temple. They are worshippers of the temple. During my olden days they used to have nataks( dramas) which continue at present in the proximity of the various temples in Saligao . Hindu boys and girls frequent Mater Dei Institute and Lourdes Convent and are an asset to these Institutions. They are also members of the various football teams and Clubs like Saligao Sporting, Adarsh Y.Sangh and Saligao United. Some of them still till the land. I was happy to see some of my old hindu friends with boilanch gaddo and boilanchem zott doing their rounds to gain their daily bread. With these gains we have supported our families and build new houses said some of the hindu bretheren. Some villagers have even gone supplying water from Saligao wells to various enterprising houses and creating problems in the village. However this is now partially solved due to some good will. RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE TEMPLE OF XRI DEVI XERVANI-VETAL AT SALGAO-VADDO, ADVAPALEV. CHAPTER V--- In Respect of General Disposition. Art.15--- The membership of the committee of temples is subject to the laws and regulations in force and to those in future may be promulgated and undertake to: a) Contribute towards the fund of beneficiation in terms of law; and b) b) make up for the want of income or better for the expenses made. Art.16The salaries of the servants and other expenses of the Committee of the membership of the temple shall be regulated in accordance with the respective estimates duly formulated and approved. Para 1--- The properties of the temple are those which are recorded in the inventory and the immovable properties which produce rent shall be given on lease or administered directly by the administrative committee in case of there being none to take on lease. Art 17. It is prohibited for any person to enter inside any temple with covered feet, when drunk or an attitude or gesture of arranging conflicts or quarrels. Art. ---18. It is prohibited to Puzari to solemnize any festivity or worship inclusive of abhixeca, nivedia and to consult oracles without prior collection of the respective fee in the list attached to this undertaking. Art. 19--- The fines to which the present undertaking refers, shall not be inflicted without hearing the respective servant by the administrative committee. Art. 20---The committee of the membership of the temple do not renounce the right to which by any form may have acquired to the movable or immovable properties, rights, shares, active debts which shall be considered as forming part of its patrimony. Art. 21-The posts of management shall be exercised without any gratification by members of the temple. They are not obliged to undertake more than one post in the management. Para one onlyThe administrative committee shall be composed possibly of members of all the vangores. However, in its composition, at least one member of the fifth vangor should be included.. Fr. RULES AND REGULATIONS OF THE TEMPLE OF XRI DEVI XERVANI-VETAL OF SALGAO-VADDO, ADVALPALEVI CHAPTERVI: Regarding Penal Dispositions. Art. 22--- The servants who do not comply with their duties shall not be paid during the time of their omission and they shall pay a fine of one to five rupees inflicted by the administrative committee in accordance with legal formalities. Para only one--- In the face of recurrence, they shall be punished by the administrative committee with the suspension for the first time and for the second time, their services shall be terminated by the administrative body with prior consent of the committee of membership of the temple who should decide the issue even in an ordinary session of the Committee. Art. 23--- The temple can be amalgamated with other similar temples when the majority of two thirds of the members listed in the list so desire and this should be decided in a meeting specially convened for this purpose. Art 24In case of dissolution or extinction of the temple, its possession shall be disposed off according to the decision the membership committee gives. He told me that Savio;s bro..in law was at their place early this morning so he probably is chatting with him. June 26-Saligao news. - Sowing activity in Saligao is in full swing. Ex-sarpanch Mr. Hipolito da Silva from Mudddavaddi and a farmer himself by profession, told me a few days back, that he keeps fit himself by ploughing the fields and expects a good harvest this time as the weatherman as predicted normal rains in Goa. -The European Cup football matches has also gripped salganvkars. Saligao having produced numerous quality football players , the matches played in Portugal in these days and brought live by ESPN and other sports channels have given a chance for the footballers to learn a few lessons and tricks .There is also joyful atmosphere attinttoand lots of our folks are seen exchanging views on the European Tournament .Portugal has already for the semi-finals The major upset was the stunning defeat of France by Greece in the other quarter-finals this morning. -The Christian Community begins to-day the devotion of the 15 Saturdays with mass and meditation on the mysteries of Our Lord. This is an old age devotion in Goa. Saligao Seminary had 89% results in the SSC this year. The new academic year 2004-2005 began at the Seminary on 13th June. Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao celebrated the mass along with the staff and later presided over the re-opening of the new scholastic year. Fr. Avinash Rebelo, the Rector welcomed the staff and students and Archbishop also spoke sharing his views on Seminary Life and Spirituality The programme also had few musical and choral items. There are 100 seminarians at the Seminary of Our Lady and another 40 in Seminary Nivas-Mapusa, a branch of Saligao Seminary. Fr. Nascimento Mascarenhas
