[saligaonet] Astuteness of a saligaukar

2004-06-26 Thread Nascimen

THE ASTUTENESS OF A SALIGAUNKAR.

Nonagenarian Professor Eduardo de
Sousa who lives in the village of Pilerne is a ganvkar of Saligao. He belongs to
the 9th Vangodd of the Comunidade de Saligao. I came to know him in 1990. He is
short of 4 years to hit a century and still going strong. He is a great writer
of many fictional stories and they have appeared in many dailies and
periodicals. He is at easy writing and telling stories in konkani, english,
portuguese etc and  is a walking
encyclopedia. A few months back he sent me his book” From Goa With Love”, ‘a
magnum opus of Goan greatness’
Dr.Leo Rebello who has written the foreword for this book relates the
story of Prof. Eduardo de Sousa
‘He was 93 years old when he went
to the doctor to get a physical examination. A few days later, the doctor saw
the man walking down the street with a gorgeous young lady on his arm. A couple
of days later, when the ‘ever-green young man’ visited the doctor again the doc
quipped, “ you are really doing great, is it not?. The man replied, “ Just doing
what you said doctor, ‘ Get a hot mamma and be cheerful ’ “ The doctor replied ‘
I did not say that.’ I said you got a heart murmur. Be careful,’ Touchwood,
Prof. Eduardo does not have a heart murmur because he has learnt not to murmur
in life’, concludes Rebello

Now two stories of  Saligaunkars as written by Professor
Eduardo in his book.

1- Saligaunkars
are proud to be referred to as ‘ Kole’. To show their astuteness, I am relating
a fact.
 A
Saligaunkar had a big shop of leather articles, including shoes. When he
went abroad he came across some shoes of different kinds and shapes, very cheap.
So he bought dozens of them. To avoid customs duty he made two different
parcels: one of right leg shoes only, and the other of left feet. When the
parcels reached Panjim they were not claimed.
After some time they were
auctioned. None of the shoe merchants present, bargained, because they were
useless. The cunning
Saligaunkar bought the parcel in auction for a song, through one of his
friends, deceiving the customs by his cleverness.

2- During the month of May, the
‘Gaunkars’ of the Communidades go to the respective clerk to write their names,
to get the ‘zonn’( divident) of the year. As a Gaunkar of Saligao, I went last
Sunday to the Communidades building to write my name. The clerk was not present.
So I asked a person present there, where to meet him. He told me to go to the
house of the director of a Company nearby, and telephone. When I entered the
house of the director, a pretty thing there asked me the reason for meeting the
director. I told her the reason for wishing to meet the director. She smiled and
told me to sit and wait for fifteen minutes, because the ‘ directory’ was taking
bath and the ‘ director’ was out!

[saligaonet] Remembering Sam Juanv & Late C.Alvares

REMEMBERING SAM JUANV
& LATE  C. ALVARES…I .

  The feast of Sao
Joao celebrated on 24th June, was earlier called Zanv’ianche Fest,
the feast of sons-in-law. It was held virtually in every village, first by taking
part in the solemn mass in the local Church( during our young age the feast was
preceded by a fast)and  boys wearing
colourful wreathes and jumping in the wells. Aurora Maria Couto in he latest
book ‘ Goa A Daughter’s Story ‘says ‘this feast  coincides with a period in the hindu
 calendar when the newly married
hindu girl is brought back to her parental home, with sexual relations restored
only when her husband comes to take her back. The monsoon season appears to be
considered inauspicious even to conceive new life. The Catholic celebration has
adopted this practice in its own way; the newly married couple is invited to the
home of the girl’s parents; the sons-in-law of the village wear a crown of
leaves and are taken to the well where they are dared to jump in. If they
hesitate, they are pushed in: a sort of unwilling separation from the wife.
There are myths and explanations for this celebration. One of them relates to
St. John to the jumping in joy in his mother’s womb, which is symbolized by the
well; another relates to the baptism of St. John in the river Jordan. The fact
remains that fertility, a reluctant stoppage of sexual relations and a joyful
reunion are commemorated in this feast that heralds the seeding time of the
monsoon.’ This feast have a special flavour in the riverine life of some
villages like Siolim, Candolim, Ribandar etc.where they rig up a ‘sangodd’, a
platform of boats on which groups sing songs.
During our
younger days on 24th June around noon-time, we lads of
Tabavaddo-Mollebhatt went round the wells of the wards accompanying  the sons-in-law and singing joyfully
some rhymes like “ Sam Juanv Konkari Buddhegele( or instead of Buddhugele,  the name or nickname of the household
was  invoked) Baint Re Natali, Sam
Juanv Konkari Budhugele Baint Re Natali”
and finally calling the name Sao Juanv we then jumped in the well. This
Buddugeli baim in Mollebhatt, Donddachi baim in Donvaddo etc were the famous
wells where young ones learnt  there
to swim and the thrill and joy it gave to the swimmers as well as on-lookers and
helpers with ropes, all this, our good friend Annette D’Souza  so beautifully described  earlier in one of her postings Every
family in the ward then distributed jackfruits or fernadino or malghues mangoes
to all and  and goan milk,” naka
sokoilem’ to the elders.
Boys did jump, this year, in the wells in
Saligao and Don-vaddo pond to keep up the tradition and the saligao spirit in
motion just shouting Sam Juanv.
However the
song” Sam Juanvcho Dhobazo” that is on everyone’s lips on Sam Juanv Day, in Goa,
is the one composed by none other than our famous Saligao Konkani Duet King ,
the late C.( Celestino ) Alvares & Party .Through the singing of this song
which is broadcast on Radio every year, the traditional feast of Sam Juanv is
kept alive till this day. Viva Sam Juanv. … to be continued

Re: [saligaonet] San Joao in Abu Dhabi

2004-06-26 Thread Zelma G DeSouza

Hello Saligaokars,

Belated Happy San Joao !!!  Saw couple of emails from Annette and news on the Goanet email too wishing everyone.

So I decided to share a few things we did at home last thursday on San Joao.

Since it was a Thursday, weekend here,  Perviz and myself decided to have some fun.

We invited three families over with kids and all we told them was make sure you have a change of

clothes for the children. The rest was a surprise.

We got one of those artificial pools, a fairly large one for about 5 kids in the age group of 2 -8 years to fit in.

We placed it in our bathroom along with some tall plants around it and filled it with water. Perviz got some colourful plastic garlands

and made crowns for the children ( Kopel) and some for them to put around their necks.  All the families then gathered around the altar,

we said a short prayer  ( kids were very excited by this time) and sang the San Joao Song after that. Perviz passed around

in the traditional way a small little glass with some feni, and everybody said Viva San Joa !!!  as the feni went down their throats.

The kids by this time were too excited for words and we gave them the green signal to JUMP !!! And there they were spalshing around in the pool, looking so

cute with all the colourful flowers around them.

The youngest child in there was 2 years old and the oldest, my son 8 years. We taught them the first two lines of the San Joao song and they kept singing it as

as they splashed around.

The food we cooked for dinner was..Red rice, prawn curry with mango, Kismor, temperada, Pork Vindalho, Gram Ross (curry - Hindu Style), cutlets

and of course the feni bottle made its rounds.  We  also had a sing song session with Perviz playing the 'Ghumat' and my daughter slapping the 'Tambourine'

on her thigh.  Heh ! I did  the Dhekni too, from my good old folk dancing days.

We had some karokhe music later and to top it all finally, we had the Football Fever on, with England and Portugal playing,

so everyone was shouting, Viva San Joao !!! Viva Portugal !!!

We had a great evening, all the four families, including us and all our kids. I wished I was in Goa that evening.

That's all folks,

Regards to all my Gaobhav's and Ghavbhoins and all your respective families.
