--- Welcome to the FRIDAY BALCAO Read the Balcao Synopsis on the website http://www.goadesc.org/balcao/ --- Dear Cybergaokars on SaligaoNet, To observe National Science Day, Friday Balcao the fortnightly discussion event to be held on 25th February will focus on a rationalist perspective of life Mr. Somu Rao, President, The Goa Science Forum and National Executive Member (FIRA) Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations will lead the discussion at the Balcao and share information on the work of the Forum. Today we see all over the world people showing little concern for humanity and humane values ! Parochial nationalism coupled with religious fanaticism is playing havoc with humanity in almost all countries of the world. Is there a way out of this chaos? Can we create a safer and rational world ? The task is stupendous but not impossible. It can be achieved through a long struggle, if human beings adopt a rational way of life. The Goa Science Forum conducts workshops to spread Scientific Temper, Humanism, Rationalism, spirit of inquiry and reforms. It also works to convince people the importance of gaining self-confidence and make them know the efficacy of a scientific method to solve their mundane problem. The Forum also encourages the critical investigation of paranormal and fringe-science claims from a responsible and scientific point of view. The Forum is affiliated to The Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations (FIRA) which is planning a protest before the Parliament on 18th April 2005 to pressurize the Government to enforce a Draft Bill submitted by the Federation to separate religion from politics. What possibilities are there to spread Scientific Temper, Humanism, Rationalism, and a spirit of inquiry through educational institutions and Parent Teachers Associations (PTA's) ? What role can NGO's, service clubs, Mahila Mandals play in promoting a rational way of life ? The Balcao discussion will cover these questions and also evolve an agenda for action by citizens on the issue. Friday Balcao will be from 4pm to 6pm at the Goa Desc Resource Centre No.11 Liberty Apartments Feira Alta, Mapusa and is open to members of the public. Hi Fred and SaligaoNetters, We're back in Canada after a hectic 2 week unplanned visit to Goa. Dad's fall was not serious, (ie no broken bones, fortunately,) but being the third in the past year, it convinced him that living alone at 87 is not a good idea. Apart from some lingering (and at times, excruciating) shoulder pains from a pinched nerve in his neck, he appears to be making a speedy recovery. He was discharged from GMC on the 16th and we (Lisette came down with me) managed to get him into a home in Arpora (Vijaya Ashram, behind the Viegas Supermarket near St. Josephs School) run by a Hindu foundation that would be able to cater to his immediate convalescence and longer term needs. They even welcomed Rascal, his canine companion for the last 12 years, who was running loose since Dad was hospitalised in early Feb. As we were not staying in Saligao, it was difficult to connect with friends and relatives in the village. Hopefully next time we will have more time to make some visits. Hi Kevin & Saligaonetters Kevin, - Glad to know that all is well & you have helped in helping your Dad to settle in ... at his age, he needs care & people around him which he will get in the Home - difficult decision but it is for the best. Yeh 2 weeks in Goa attending to things & finding solutions makes it a hectic vacation. A piece of bad news for those who knew Mr. Anthony D'Souza of Grand Morod - he was in the Panchayat at one time. Uncle Anthony (since he is Luwell's uncle & mine by marriage) passed away at home this morning (24/2/2005) after a brief stay in hospital. He has been on bed eversince he broke his hip & had been operated upon. God has been kind & merciful as he has reased him from his suffering. His wife Flory & family are doing ok & coping as is his brother Fr. Almir. For those of you youngsters - you will know his children - Allwyn/Marissa, (Saligao), Jude (Bahrain), Tina/Jo (Dubai). The funeral will be on Saturday as Tina is flying down tomorrow. We pray that God grant him eternal rest - May his soul rest in peace.
