RE: [SA-list] execute command on Alert

2005-10-03 Thread Bill Sweetman

Never mind, problem solved.

Batch file was writing to recycle.log …
in the windows\system directory.

I hard coded the path to the log file
and the .vbs file, all is working.

Dirk,

I see in the ‘Task Manager’
that ‘cmd.exe’ is running, so it does appear that the .BAT is
called.

I cannot see the command window on the
server, probably because SA is running as a service (yes, it has interact with
the desktop enabled).

I’ll run SA as an interactive
application next to see what happens.

The .BAT file only has 5 lines, and none
appear to execute.

   Date /t >>
recycle.log

   Time /t >>
recycle.log

   Recycle.vbs

   Echo >>
recycle.log

   Pause

Thanks,

The PAUSE never gets called, hence I
believe it’s something to do with permissions on the .BAT file, yes?

SA and the .BAT file are on the same
machine.

put a PAUSE command in the BAT file that
way when it's started you'll see the output.

I’m having difficulty executing a
command when an alert is raised.

It’s a very simple .BAT file, but
it does not appear to be called.

I put in the full path: C:\recycle.bat

I put the following in the file
“date /t >> log.txt” and nothing happens.

The SA log records the alert, but
doesn’t show the .BAT file being called.

Am I missing something simple? Is it
permissions?

Thanks,

-bill

A sharing of general monitoring techniques is an excellent
idea. It gives the opportunity to pick up techniques you may not have considered
before and also there may be SA based solutions to problems you were considering
but didn't know where to start.

I would be very interested.

I think it is a
great idea also, if Woodstone is agreeable.  I could see how they might
have reservations about control of the
content.

  User BBS for "How-To" info
I've thought a more generic how-to forum for
monitoring tools(mostly intergrating them with SA) and have it
set up but never announced.  I'm sure there's
  interest...

  I have a dream

A dream of a place where people can go to see in long form how to
monitor different kinds of servers, services and
  processes.

A quiet place with information, helpful tips, kind suggestions and
  the occasional flower.

I also have a webserver with nothing to do, and I haven't pissed
off my wife with late nights in front of the PC
lately.

Any interest in ServersAlive.snarkybox.com as a user
  BBS?

Correct.
But if it would be totaly global it would also not be very
usefull.
The way dependencies work they are checked once and
everything depending on it is only checked if it's up.
Meaning that if you would have 100s of entries depending on
one entry, you would get issues.
Example
    test GW1
    sub1
    sub2
   ...

sub100

10:00:00 test GW1 -> UP
10:00:01    test sub 1
    ...
   (10:01:00 GW1 goes down)
    10:01:01 test sub61 <- this will give a down,
although it might be up..it's GW1 that is down

Have to many items depend on one entry could give you this
result.

Dirk.

ok, but then I have to do this for every group and

otherwise my structure will be lost ..

Why add that?  You can already do that.  Create
that gateway check and have everything else depend on it.

Hi,

would it be possible
to do a global depends on check?
f.e. if the default
gateway form the servers alive machine is reachable?

... we have
sometimes the problem, that the network wil be down, where the servers alive
machine is *gr* ...

thank in
advance
