on your Sam? This is the ROM version number, multiplied by 10. For
example, my Sam, and Ian's Sam, have versions 3.0 and 3.5 (though I
can't remember which way round, and I'm not in a position to check at
the moment).

The reason I ask is that MNEMOcompress, which was was on Fred 68, calls
a few ROM routines which weren't specified in the documentation[1], and
therefore might not necessarily have been exactly the same in different
ROM revisions. Indeed, I made it print a big notice on the screen when
you run it under a ROM version I hadn't had the opportunity to test.
This, as it now turns out, includes the ROM in SimCoupe because Allan's
Sam has version 3.1 in it. No one has ever written to me about this...

Funny you should mail about this. I recently had a somewhat interesting
discussion with Colin and Simon about the various ROMs aout there.

AFAIK the recent ROM versions are 3.0, 3.1 and 3.5.

The only difference between 3.0 and 3.1 is the copyright message
(and the version number of course). So we have:

According the the official 3.0 sources: MILES GORDON TECHNOLOGY plc
3.1 (as provided in SimCOupe): MILES GORDON TECHNOLOGY PLC

Now, I suspect that the 3.5 ROM only changes this to:
West Coast Computers.

Can anyone confirm this?

Regards,
 -Frode

Ahh, so that's where version 3.1 came from! I suppose it figures the ROM
that has always been supplied with SimCoupe came from Allan's own SAM.

After the discussion with Frode (and to ensure an official ROM was being
supplied) I changed the version number back to 3.0 and left the PLC as
upper-case. It sounds like this would be better for overall compatability
too, even though nothing else is different between 3.0 and 3.1.

Does anyone have a 3.5 image they can send me? I'd be interested in
comparing them, and it'd be worth adding to the SA ROM collection Simon N
Goodwin sent me (I thought that was on NVG already but can't see it).

Because you CAT a directory, you don't DIR a directory

LOAD d1filename instead of LOAD D1:filename
(although, again, you should be able to use the other, but it's not
preferred)
the device shouldn't be part of the filename as it causes all
sorts of problems

LOAD pnumber instead of LOAD number
