Re: [Samba] patch to configure.in for Solaris/gcc (-KPIC vs. -fPIC)
Hello Gerald, Sometimes this may seem to you as a stupid question, but I'm helpless. I used patchadd and patch commands on Solaris to add these 2 patches you have given without any luck. I also reckon that these shouldn't be Solaris patches cos they don't have the basecode and the revision that Solaris patches should have.Pls tell me how to add them and tell me how Autoconf comes in to the picture. I'm installing this on a Solaris 2.6 on SPARC. If you are just talking about share level access then that work's over NAT. Logging on to a domain is where the problem is. You logon, but the windows client gets confused due to payload in the packet. Its a pretty complex issue unless you're someone who understands the netbios protocol. I started reading RFC 1001 and 1002. There may be easier ways or you may not be trying to do what I think you're doing, so hopefully someone else can help you better than I can. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] vfs audit broken ?
hi i'm trying to use the audit module with samba 2.2.4, while the recycle bin module works (with the patch from Scot Hetzel) the audit module doesn't. i even don't get the "VFS_INIT: vfs_ops loaded". isn't it possible to use more than one vfs module ? and yes i set up syslogd correctly... btw, it's not needed to use '\n' with syslog() -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

To connect to a windows server: smbclient -L //server/share Are you using linux? The command to mount a directory in linux looks something like this in linux: smbmount //$i/"$n" /mnt/NetWork/$i/"$n" -o uid=username,gid=users,guest,rw,fmask=777 Where: i=server n=share name /mnt/Network is your mounting directory. [Samba] Samba + Quickbooks
This is set up with Win2K boxes sharing a QB file on a SAMBA share. It may be quite different than with 95-98x-ME(Miserable Edition). There are two or more problems - one thing I identified is that it is possible for two computers to connect to the QB(QuickBooks) share using the same quick books logon - something that will cause data corruption. (Something that could have been easily addressed in the QB software too -- can't wait till GNUcash does invoices). The smb.conf that follows seems to have fixed this problem The other problem only starts after the file size reaches the magic 16777216 byte file size - after that size sharing a QB file on SAMBA seems to cause corruption on it's own. After a talking with several folks at Intuit - - (and being told twice that running off a Linux server was not problem) I found a brighter tech who told me that they don't support linux as a server and they have notes showing that they know about the file corruption problems that they can't show us. They don't think there is a work-around, but then I think they are probably wrong. I have added oplocks = no strict locking = yes To the share definition. And will know if it works in a while. If this gets to Andrew Trigell's attention, let him know that I will supply him with QB software to test this out if he needs it - all he has to do is ask. The files and directories belong to accounting.accounting the permissions are set to 770 NO guarantee if this works - It will take some weeks of just using it to see if I have it fixed - in the mean time I'm dong lots of verifydata and backing up several times/ day. I did go ahead and upgrade one of my machines to 2.2.4, with no change - the host still did not appear in Network Neighborhood. I checked with the Windows guys, and there was no previous machine account on the domain for that machine. Before the reIP, it was browsable. This seems to point 100% at WINS, but I hope that I'm not ruffling too many feathers by continuing this thread here - I think that this is probably the best group to help, even though it doesn't seem to be a problem exclusively with Samba. But, if I plug my computer directly into the DSL modem, I have no problems with samba. So, it looks like samba does not work from a masqueraded machine. Has anyone been able to set this up? Yes, Samba should load the primary and supplementary groups into the user security context. There must be something else wrong in the setup on that share. Can you post your smb.conf ? Re: [Samba] Unix Group Question with repect to Samba
I've set things up almost exactly like that before, with no problems. Did you set the share to be writable in smb.conf? If the share is configured to be read-only it would show the behavior you describe. [Samba] Unix Group Question with repect to Samba
I have a question with regards to using Unix groups with samba. This might be easier to explain with an example. Lets say I have two users UserID: GID UserA:Group1 UserB:Group2 etc. I now have an entry in /etc/group that looks like groupdev::UserA, UserB If I have a directory with group ownership set to "groupdev" and group mode "rws" UserA & UserB cannot create a file in the share on their Windows machine. But if they connect to the Unix host, no problem. Does Samba understand user lists for group permissioning? What port is listed on the Properties box on the Win2k PC? see http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q255507 I'd think it should list the network share, e.g. \\samba2\hp4plus like that. You'll have to re-install all of your IE5.x, DirectX, SP2 (unless you build a "streamlined" version of Win2k, which would then have SP2 incorporated), etc. If you don't care about the user accounts, just run SysPrep 1.1 and reboot; you'll be prompted for the admin & networking info, and everything else will be as was. SysPrep is used to create a machine that would act as the source PC for imaging, e.g. Ghost, etc. The first time it boots it prompts for info... [Samba] Cannot find Primary Domain - Please help, rather urgent
Hello, I'm getting a persistent error at login (effectively locking me out) on two Win2k machines that were once assigned to a domain on my windows network (win2k server was once the PDC, just changed to Samba) Cannot log you into the primary because the system's computer account is missing or the password was incorrect. [Samba] Win2k Printing Problems
I just joined this list, If this has been answered before I apologize: I have a Redhat 7.2 box running Samba 2.2.4 I have a few printers running on JetDirect boxes that I am attempting to print to. I used printconf in Redhat to set them up within the linux box. Everything works fine from the linux box. I set them up within samba (see [printers] below), but when I print I get "Failed to open, retrying" on the queue. If I do remove "use client driver=yes", I can then print but Win2k tells me that under "status" that "access denied; unable to connect" on the queue. I've tried testing with "use client driver=yes" and "disable spoolss = yes" and it does not seem to make much difference other than getting rid of the "access denied; unable to connect error" Here is what I think the important section in the smb.conf [printers] comment = All Printers path = /var/spool/lpd printer admin = jgerry guest ok = Yes printable = Yes use client driver = Yes browseable = No Any suggestions? Log in from the W98 client and run smbstatus on the server, to see what shows up You can set the log level to 3 or higher, and look in the log.w98pc (or whatever the hostname is) during the failed/successful attempts to see why it fails the first time and works the second. [Samba] Samba - cannot print multiple copies
Hi, I successfully setup printing on my FreeBSD box using Samba with apsfilter and lprng. However, I have encountered two issues: 1) Cannot print multiple copies of documents from my windows box (e.g. notepad). Only the first copy is printed and the rest don't get printed. 2) My spool directory is getting filled up and I would like the job removed after the print job is finished I've tried: - selecting collated and not collated in the windows printing, that didn't fix the problem. Still one copy printed. - adding lpd_bounce in both and also one at a time in the /etc/printcap and in the /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf. /etc/printcap -> added :lpd_bounce:\ before my :mx line /usr/local/etc/lpd.conf -> changed to # default lpd_bounce (FLAG on) Still one copy printed. Changed them back to not have lpd_bounce but still only one copy ;) - even when I do lpr -r DOC_NAME in FreeBSD, it still leaves stuff in the spool directory. I use lprm - to flush it Things I've setup: - using the default lpd.conf and lpd.perms files. - not running passwords or custom freebsd users on samba. Strictly guest access by user nobody. - set up mode 1777 on the samba print dir - Ran checkpc -f -V. No problems. Had an old problem of not being able to access /dev/lpt0 but I fixed the access privilages (still wierd that we have to do that, the freebsd installed lpr didn't require that, why does lprng require changing the port's access rights?) - I can print multiple copies from the FreeBSD box if I run lpr -#N, up to the 20 limit I specified below. I will greatly appreciate help in fixing these two problems. I've included my setup files below. If there is any else that is required, please reply and I will include the details of that as well. [Samba] "." at the end of files/folders name causing problem!
Hi, Is this very well known, is there a workaround? Log to your Unix Samba server. Create in one of your share the following folders: mkdir -p test mkdir -p test./A Get on your Windows and access the share... Access the "test." directory... welcome in the "test" directory, not the "test." with the "." at the end. If the "test" directory didn't exists, Windows pops up a window with an error (something like, "can't find ..."). Try to delete the directory "test.". Guess what, Windows just erased the "test" directory... tested on Windows NT SP6a. Is there a "workaround"? Do we need a new configuration option... "hide windows dot files" but I guess I should use "hide files = /*./" , if I want to hide those type of files/folders... right? FW: [Samba] Windows 2000 and Samba
No one had any other offerings here? I can't find anything that clears this up. And this machine can get to a Linux based Samba server just fine. I also changed the LMHosts file as you directed but it didn't help any. The DNS server works fine to resolve those names from both itself and the Win2k machine in question. Szilard: There was never a mapping on this machine though there was a 'shortcut' in "My Network Places". I got rid of that but the service to that server still doesn't work. Also, there was a reghack that I found for Win2k that added a longer timeout value to connect to this resource. That didn't help either. Any other ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated! Or better yet, is your samba server configured as a WINS server? If it's a windows networking error, try renaming %system root%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam to %system root%\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts (i.e. remove the .sam file suffix) read the comments in the lmhosts file and edit the lmhosts file as appropriate for your network Finally, check your DNS setup on the two faulty w2k machines, w2k relies on DNS a lot more for netbios name resolution. From the w2k command prompt, do a nslookup server name and see how long that takes - if that's not working you may need to tweak your DNS settings on those two w2k machines. As I recall, all versions of Windows after Windows 95 (or actually everything starting from NT4+SP3) want to use encrypted passwords only. I know that there are registry patches included with Samba to allow cleartext passwords, but you will have to apply them to every client PC. Look at the ENCRYPTION.txt file in the Samba documentation for more information on this, and look at the description of the "encrypt passwords" option in smb.conf. Personally, I would suggest setting up UNIX password sync instead. If you have more than a few client PCs it would be easier to get that working than to go around and apply registry changes to every PC, and you wouldn't have to remember to do it when you add or reinstall a machine. There are some complications with getting passwd sync and NIS to work together, check the list archives for the discussions. -- That feeling just came over me. -- Albert DeSalvo, the "Boston Strangler" -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
RE: [Samba] Win98 join a PDC
Tried this... didn't help. An update: I got the Win2K machine to finally join the domain using "root" and it's password. I hate that, but I am using a different password for the samba side than the Unix side. Also, I can log in using my regular domain account on the Win2K server perfectly. So, obviously samba is configured properly, and there's something specific to Win98 that I am missing... It is ultimately consistent in logging in every other time... even after a logout, it takes two login attempts to get back in on the Win98 client. Wierd. [Samba] Keeping your code current via wget through an ftp proxy
I've recently figured out something that others may find useful...we have an ftp proxy, and I couldn't get cvs to work through it. I finally got wget working, and can now mirror my source to the current samba_2_2 version by downloading only the newer files. Then I can run ./configure, etc to update my system. - The command line is in a text file named wget1. I run it from my /eodc/shared/samba_2_2/source dir, by cd'ing to /eodc/shared/samba_2_2/source, then running ./wget1 Note that it's run from 4 dir's down; this is why I have "--cut-dirs=4"; so that the files end up in the same dir that I'm in. (If you set yours up with /22x_source, you'd make it "--cut-dirs=1") The "-nH" strips off the host info (pserver.samba.org). The "-S" displays server responses The "-m" is to mirror the source/destination dir's. According to WS-FTP Pro, our ftp proxy is a "User, no login" type. Yours may be different, so you may have to play with the command line to get wget to work. Believe me, I played for a while before I got it right! For us, we log in to the local ftp proxy with: the REMOTE ftp user and ftp site hostname/IP. The password is our e-mail address. The proxy passes that info on to the remote ftp site, and we're off and running. The destination directory is appended to the proxy IP:port, and passed on to the remote ftp server. Here's what works, with a bogus IP...substitute your proxy info and e-mail address: wget -nH --cut-dirs=4 -S -m ftp:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:[EMAIL PROTECTED]@192.168.254.1:21/pu b/unpacked/samba_2_2/source Hope this helps someone... Kenny, smbfs is probably what you are looking for, but it is not supported by the kernel in Solaris. The options that I know of are: 1. Use Sharity (http://www.obdev.at/products/sharity/index.html) 2. Make Win2k export the directories via NFS 3. Set up a Linux box, mount the Share, then export the directory via NFS, then you can mount it in Solaris. [Samba] Advice needed about remote colaboration
I am about to start a small business together with two colleagues. We are all located in different parts of the country and is in need of good remote collaboration (we will do major software development). We will use VPN tunnels (over internet) between our computers. Ideally I would like to set up one PDC at one site and backup DC at the two others. All three machines could act as file servers where everyone maintain a CVS repository for the parts of the software he is responsible for. Unfortunately Samba is not able to act as backup domain controller at the moment (at least not the stable release that we probably want to use). What other ways can one use Samba in this scenario? The reason we want to have one server in each site is of course to be able to do work even if the VPN tunnels are down. We want to be able to use the same user account on all the three servers to avoid having to log in more than once... All suggestions and advice are welcome! Regards Trist

If you are set up to use WINS this is definitely your problem. If possible upgrade your samba systems to 2.2.4. Jim -Original Message- From: Tian-xiong Lu [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, May 09, 2002 9:29 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [Samba] copy a large volume of data from PC to samba server Hi there, Is there someone over there knows a method or script that can copy a large volume of data (in folders) from PCs to a samba server (suppose there is enough space there)? I know using smbclient or smbtar can backup data on PCs to samba server, but it is written in tar files.I wonder whether this method can handle a large folder, say, in 10GB size. Also, using smbclient with mget and recurse on, one can copy folders from PC to samba server. But in doing so, it is in interactive mode and keeps asking yes/no to continue. Is there a way to get rid of these prompts? Thanks, Tian. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Problem with samba 2.2.4 and Mandrake 8.2
Hello all, I updated my mandrake 8.2 samba from version 2.2.3a to 2.2.4, using mandrake cooker package, but after the update my win98 clients can not logon on the server any more, the clients can't even find the pdc, because i get a big time from the time that the user type his username and pass, and the logon error message. So is this a problem with mandrake's package or the logon procedure (smbpasswd file) has changed from this versions?? Do i have to change something in smb.conf??? My other problem is that i still get errors when mounting windows directories on mandrake 8.2, someone told me this was a problem with 2.4.18 kernel, is it right?? The new kernel from cooker (2.4.18.14mdk) correct this problem?? Tanks very much in advance for the help... Cyro __ Quer ter seu próprio endereço na Internet? [Samba] Authorizing login per station
Hi, We're using Samba 2.2.2 as a PDC for W2k and XP clients. We have two types of users - "regular" users and "management". The problem I have is to allow only the "management" users to login from certain stations, and deny the login rights to regular users. That is, I need the ability do set per-station login permissions. Is there a way to do this using samba 2.2.x branch, or is it planned for 3.x? If there's a way to do this with 2.2.x, I'd appreciate any pointer to docs or other info on doing it. [Samba] issue with long domain names and winbindd_cache
I just started testing 2.2.4 (with winbind) and am looking for advice on a couple of issues. 1. This isn't really a winbind issue, just my *nix ignorance... our domain name is longer than 8 chars. Therefore, the owner & group of every file (ls -l) shows up the same. I have to ls -ln, then grep the results of getent group|passwd to look up the desired number. Not the end of the world, but definitely a pain. Any way for me to format ls or somehow check the owners of a file without going at it this round about way? 2. If the .tdb files in /var/cache/samba get corrupted, I assume that all file ownership will have to be re-applied to match the new SID-id pairs when these tables are re-created. From a backup/restore point of view, will this dir stand on it's own? Can I back it up each night & if something goes wrong, stop winbindd & drop it back in? [Samba] PATCH: Printing from ACT 2000 on Win2k
Apologies to those running ACT 2000 on Win2k. There was an incorrect patch in 2.2.4 that causes printing from the application to sometimes fail. (of course this was broken in 2.2.3a also). [Samba] Cannot connect to server upgraded from 2.0.6 to 2.2.4
I recently upgraded a samba server that had been running 2.0.6 to 2.2.4 because I could not authenticate to it from windows XP clients. Unfortunately, I'm not able to connect to to the new installation. Windows reports that '\\[server] is not accessible' and 'The semaphore timeout period has expired' The problem seems to be caused by lock contention on the secrets.tdb file. For whatever reason, any SMB server on campus ends up being probed alot. (I don't know if it's bored students or something that some windows OS's just do, but it happens.) This means that I'm not the only one trying to access my server. In any event it seems as though some of the time, after acquiring a lock on offset 656 of secrets.tdb, an smbd will go and select() on it's network sockets. This means that if the client does not respond immediately, all the other smbd's will, within short order, block on that lock. It is not the case that all the smbd's block holding the lock, but some do. Since I know people will ask, here's my smb.conf: [global] encrypt passwords=yes update encrypted=yes workgroup = CAMPUS null passwords = no load printers = no wins server=wins.andrew.cmu.edu local master = no name resolve order = lmhosts wins host bcast [wincd] path=/usr0/wincd writable=true [tmp] path=/usr0/wintmp writable=true -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Re: [Samba] How do i set different permission for a shared directory?
the simpliest way would be to let unix permission system do the job have only one share : /docusers each user is connected under its own name (both windows and unix sense) its home dir is writable for him all the dirs are readable by the docu group all you have to do is to set the same primary group for all the users you would have : user "paul", primary group "docu", home /docusers/paul user "peter", primary group "docu", home /docusers/peter ... drwxr-xr-x root docu /docusers drwxr-x--- paul docu /docusers/paul drwxr-x--- peter docu /docusers/peter ... [Doc_Users] path = /docusers writable = yes on the unix side, samba shares /docusers without any restriction, access permissions are handled at the os level on the windows side, users connect to only one share, Doc_Users, in which they are all able to read all files but can't write only in their own directory of course this supposes you have no other constraints that would prohibit such a configuration... hth A 01:18 10/05/02 -0500, vous avez écrit : >Hello, > >Would really appreciate any advise on how the security setting should be >setup. > >I have running Samba ver 2.0.7 on HPUX10.20. [Samba] Oplocks, Oplock_break and request Oplock_break
Hello there. I'm having a few problems using samba 2.2.3a and sharing a paradox database. On the whole everything works fine but (there's always a but), every now and again. a machine's shares will close causing the database to crash (sometimes only that machine) - the other networked machine recover after a few error messages. I guess the easy answer would be to disable oplocks for the share but I'd rather not since it makes maintaining the database much quicker when I use it personally after hours. I've did a little digging the the log files and have came up with the following: there are 3 machines (doris, o-techs & hazel). It appears that Doris had an oplock on a particular file. For some reason (probably the clients hazel or 0-techs), on trying to free the oplock, samba killed the doris SMBD process even though it has locked files. Upon doris reconnecting, these locked files are not reconnected hence screwing up the database on the machine. I am including the relevant sections from the logs below & what machien generated them. Can someone please describe what the error messages actually mean and can anyone offer any sugestions/solutions to the problem. Thanks for any help. [Samba] Samba 2.2.4 on s/390
I have just compiled Samba 2.2.4 with the following configure. ./configure --with-pam --with-winbind I used the same instructions as I did go get Samba 2.2.2 working. I noticed the winbind daemon dies after about a minute. I set the debug to 10 for it and I found some confusing things. Why is it trying to connect to GIGDC1 with a null username? RE: [Samba] Win98 join a PDC
Good information, and I will definitely investigate this. However, my domain right now is in a test situation (working on replacing an NT 4.0 domain with this) and is not on our main network which does consist of Cisco switches. I have it set up on a small cheapo switch, isolated from the main network, where the only thing that is on the switch is the Samba box, the W2K box, and the W98 client. Also, DHCP shows no signs of any problems: the workstation gets an address with no delay. Any other ideas that I can try? Thanks!! [Samba] After reIP, Samba hosts not browsable.
Hey folks, We recently reIP'ed our main office LAN. Ever since this was done, none of our Samba hosts are browsable via Network Neighborhood. While they are still availible via Start -> Run -> \\servername, it's an annoying inconvenience. Stats: * PDC and BDC are NT domain controllers * Samba hosts are running several versions of Samba, from the later 2.0.* releases, through 2.2.1 and 2.2.3 * Samba hosts include Linux, IRIX, HP-UX, and Solaris To me, this points at a WINS problem, but deleting the machine account from the domain and adding a new one does no good. Unfortunately, since WINS is such a black art (at least to me), the NT admins can't figure out where the problem lies, either. I doubt if this is a problem with Samba itself, but I'm hoping that since we're all here because we're integrating *NIX with Windows networks, someone might have run into this problem before. Any help would be much appreciated! If you need further info, I'll be happy to provide it. Thanks! Benny ~~ Always carry a short length of fibre-optic cable. [Samba] Win2k won't join Samba-Domain
Hallo all, I have got a problem with samba (2.2.3a, 2.2.4 and CVS-Version). It's inpossible to let a Win2K (SP1) join my Samba-Domain. The error is that the cred(irials?)s are wrong. Seemed to have to do with networking stuff. I the Windows 2000 case, the guy that told me had contacted CISCO (they were using a CISCO layer 3 switch) and CISCO changed some stuff on the switch (don't know what). Same scenario for NT 4 case: Baystack switch, PC's with Accton network card. Changed speed on switches (half duplex). [Samba] samba and win95
I'm running a smb server on a redhat 7.2 system. everything works just fine except when I try to share something on a win95 machine (user level). The win95 machine can't access the list of users provided by samba. ("You can not view a list of users at this time.") Anyone know why? -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] somebody please help
Dear all, I have a serious problem that I can't rectify. My smb.conf is as follows. I use Solaris 2.6 on SPARC # Global parameters [global] workgroup = SOME_DOMAIN netbios name = 220R server string = Samba For Backup On Solaris security = SERVER encrypt passwords = Yes update encrypted = Yes obey pam restrictions = Yes password server = * 10.2.240.251 socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192 os level = 50 preferred master = False local master = No domain master = False dns proxy = No wins server = 10.2.240.251 winbind uid = 1-2 winbind gid = 1-2 template homedir = /samba/shares/%D/%U template shell = /bin/sh guest account = ftp The samba server is shown in the network neighborhood. [Samba] The status of Active Directory support in Samba
Hi, Sorry if I missed some documentation on this. I would like to know if at present I can use samba as an active directory service and also if this is implemented on top of LDAP so enabling me to use LDAP tools to query this server in addition to win2k/xp clients? Any pointers or additional documentation would be much appreciated.
