[Samba] Laggy and faulty Samba server
Hi, I've installed Samba a few times, and I always have the same problem - except now I really want to get rid of it. My Samba server is very, very, very slow on occations (not always), and some times it's really annoying. What happens is that it doesn't seem to be online for a period of 5-10 seconds once every minute! [Samba] Sleeping Clients
I have tried posting this problem before and had some jelpful suggestions, but to no avail. Let me reword the problem and possibly jog someone head. My hardware/software config: Samba 2.2.7a Suse 8.0 distro Athlon 2000+ XP machine mucho memory. One ethernet interface verified running 100 Full-duplex. The problem: The Windows XP clients logon to the Samba server and download the roaming profiles extremely fast, but after this point just stops. The clients never come back, just keep showing "logging on". The SignOrSeal entry has been done on the XP clients. I have turned Samba trace level=3 and it shows the sighon and download of the profiles and then shows nothing happening - no errors, just nothing. The machines(server and clients) appear configured correctly as non samba traffic is very robust (FTP, ping, mail etc). When I disable roaming profiles I have the same problem after the logon the Client is "stuck". This problem happens from 2 totally different XP clients (Hardware is very different between the 2). The Router/switch looks heathy. I have applied all patches to XP and microcode to the router/switch. I have tried Samba 2.2.3a and 2.2.6, 2.2.7, 2.2.7a all with the same result. I am using DHCP from my provided by my router. I do see in my wins.dat that I have no entrty 1d showing a Local Master Browser, but on is displayed when I do a nmblookup - just fishing on this. [Samba] samba and os/2 "warpserver for ebusiness"
Is there anybody who has made experiences with "subject"? I tried to get a samba printserver vers 2.2.1a on a suse linux box. It worked successfully so my win 98 clients are able to print via cups on an network printer. We also have an existing os/2 "warpserver for ebusiness" as the PDC and fileserver which one do the authentication of all users. I'm still not able to configure the connection so that the win 98 users could be authenticated by the os/2 server, if they want to get access to the printserver. I'm still having two user managements - one at the os/2 PDC, one at the linux/samba box. What i tried so far: I added the samba server as a trusted server to the os/2 machine. I set the authentication in smb.conf to "domain" - formerly "user" But the authentication still fails. As i can see in /var/log/messages, samba sent the auth-request to os/2 but got no answer. Is there anybody who knows something about os/2 issues? We like to switch over to linux/samba solutions step by step :-) Thanks in advance nessim just a question about adding a samba server (printer) to an existing os/2 Warp Server domain. Given: OS/2 Warp Server PDC linux server/samba 2.2.1a which shares printers win98 users, authenticated by the Warp Server 4.0 I'm searching for a way to authenticate the printer users through the OS/2 PDC Until now it works only if i create samba users on the linux machine, means, every user must have an account on the linux machine. Is there a way? Some hints, links, documentation are appreciated. regards, nessim __ Keine Zeit fur Firlefanz? Blitz-SMS von WEB.DE FreeMail! In fact I found it was faster when I > turned swap off! Just the point I made previously, that unrelated problems tend to obfuscate the relative performances, especially if not systematically researched. Using "rsync" must have something to do with the pathological behaviour of memory usage. There's something about the way Linux tends to use up all of the memory available that I find strange compared to commercial *nices. But to go overboard and claim swap space can only be caused by an ill-conceived app or an unexpected interaction with an "improvement" in new kernel. I personally prefer dump|restore pipeline. It never goes much below the theoretical throughput capacity (about 11.5 MB/s is what I get) and never any swapping. If I dump to "/dev/null" than the throughput is way beyond that, although I can't pull the precise figure off the top of my head right now (I'll check it up and report in a future installment if necessary). Now, clearly I was talking about ext3, because there is no dump for reiser and because ACLs and EAs are a late Addition. I used ext3 until recently. Another reason to favour ext3 was that Oracle for example doesn't certify any other system for dynamically growing tablespaces beyond 2GB. (By the way I got about 3-4 times faster imp of a 22 GB big Oracle exp with my dual Tyan/K7MP1200, 3 GB ECC DDR, under RH 7.3, than on a top of the line quad HP-PA RISC 440 MHz under HP-UX 11.0 - but it was not a rigorous benchmark either, so let's not generalize.) However, using "tar -b 64" I got the same transfer rates from reiser to ext3 - the limiting factor is fast ether not fs. I'll see what I get when I redirect to "/dev/null" and post it later on. Now the lack of a decent "dump/restore" for reiser is another sore fact that might stand in the way of faster acceptance of this fine fs. I'm all sold on the paradigm and believe that the authors will make it even better (read faster) in the coming version 4. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Only since 2.7 (I think) have you been able to find out that the used memory is in fact just disk cache blocks that will be released as soon as you need them for real memory. Re: [Samba] can't print more copys than one
I assume you get multiple copies when the printer is connected directly to the windows client. We had the same complaint a while back. Are you the same person that complained before? I looked into how the multiple copy thing worked at that time. I did some testing. I used a postscript format for the print jobs. >From both linux (abiword) and windows (word), only a single document is sent to print. Contained within each document was the code (postscript is a computer language which runs on some printers.) to output multiple copies. That is, samba has no influence on the number of copies printed, at least with postscript printers. So, maybe this is a driver problem, not a samba problem? Shifting now to pure speculation, maybe the windows client computer and the printer need to be in two way communication to allow multiple copies to be printed. I have found (On my little home network) that the best solution to most printing problems is to set up a queue on the linux server which handles postscript files well, and then send everything to that queue as a postscript job. I use HP Laserjet III + and it works fine, and all flavors of windows seems to have that printer driver available. Re: [Samba] ACL issues still unresolved

I'm currently looking at exactly this setup in order to migrate some shares off an NT box. I see two basic problems here: 1. smbclient and smbmnt/smbmount don't, apparently, have any support for ACLs 2. smbcacls is not format-compatible with getfacls. I would presume the first is on the (eventual) todo list for the samba team, but the second seems to be a short-term solution that would work nicely. As is, I'm thinking I'm better off with the approach suggested by another poster, which is to take this opportunity to review the ACLs on the shares and correct them manually. It's going to hurt, of course, but the end result will be a better configuration. Cheers, Waider. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] / Yes, it /is/ very personal of me. [Samba] PAM, PDC and Winbind
Hello all, I currently have the following setup working nicely: A Samba PDC, with LDAP-SAM, syncs passwords between LDAP and Samba (and /etc/shadow when appropriate) correctly - either when changing them through Samba (samba has PAM support enabled and working) or through normal Unix mechanisms (/usr/bin/passwd, using pam_smbpass, pam_ldap, etc.). Several other Linux machines, running Samba, using winbind/pam_winbind (NOT nss_winbind), and nss_ldap to authenticate against the PDC. Using pam_winbind to sync passwords allows me to exploit the fact that the Samba processes in the PDC does sync the LDAP and Samba passwords for me. Avoiding nss_winbind allows me to conserve the userid's stored in LDAP and reuse them throughout the network, without suffering from the winbind limitation of the "first-come, first-served" userid assignment. Windows machines do not, of course, suffer from this. Basically, Samba is just the auth/password change mechanism for my client machines (local unix passwords are also affected when appropriate). My dilemma is with my PDC's configuration: I currently use pam_smbpass to do the synching of Samba passwords when the password change occurs external to Samba. I don't particularly like this - I'd rather use something like pam_winbind to do my password changes *through* samba as opposed to parallel to it. However, I've had no success in getting winbind to do this while running on the PDC (although I could join the machine to its own domain - some trickery there; and get wbinfo to display the correct list of users and groups - which means that winbind is attaching itself to the PDC correctly). It won't, however, do password authentication and changes correctly. Any ideas? Advice? I had run into pam_smb (pam_domain? pam_ntdom?) earlier, which supposedly could do this for me, but IIRC it wasn't being maintained, and it was pretty buggy. Best Diego PS/ If you want copy of my configs, let me know and I'll e-mail them to you directly. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

When I moved shares I used Veritas BackupExec to restore a regular NT backup to a *nix. This gave all rights to smbnull:smbnull. Since I was frustrated with NT acl commands I never came around to format conversions. A one-time manual adjustment wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be. _ Get 25MB, POP3, Spam Filtering with LYCOS MAIL PLUS for $19.95/year. http://login.mail.lycos.com/brandPage.shtml?pageId=plus&ref=lmtplus -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

2. smbcacls is not format-compatible with getfacls. the second seems to be a short-term solution that would work nicely. Following the suggestion of Tony BT I'm planning to write a Perl script to get the output of smbcacls for each file and convert it to the appropriate chown/setfacl commands (and apply them) for each file that has been copied. [Samba] sync /etc/passwd with samba's smbpasswd file
Hi all, I want to sync the password to smbpasswd when I change the Linux system a/c password in /etc/passwd. I have compiled samba with --with-pam_smbpasswd and install the file pam_smbpass.so to /lib/security. I have looked into the samba's source directory: source/pam_smbpass/samples, their is a directory named "password-sync". How can I use this file to sync password from system a/c to smbpasswd a/c. Or, there is another way to do that? I can sync password from smbpasswd to /etc/passwd with the following config in global: [global] unix password sync = true passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat= \ *password* %n\n \ *password* %n\n \ *successful* My system config: Redhat 7.3 samba 2.2.7a Many thanks!
