Re: [Samba] xp problem
Pippo, I experienced the same problem before, but it had nothing to do with XP or Win2k. It has to do with the computer browser service. Anyway, my resoluction was this: [globals] preferred master = No local master = No domain master = No Please let me know ifyou try this, and if it works. Thanks. --Dan Message: 2 Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 12:05:52 -0500 To: John H Terpstra <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Samba] xp problem Cc: [EMAIL PROTECTED] At 08:27 PM 12/21/2002 +, you wrote: >Pippo, > >We will need more information than this to help you. Without this information we would be jst >guessing - not very productive. Sorry, but I don't quite understand. I thought I had explained my setup fairly concisely. The Win2k and XP boxes are configured for workgroup file and printer sharing. There is no domain or domain server. FBSD is running samba as a file and printer server. I can only see the XP machine in My Network Places and the samba connection to the FBSD machine. When FBSD is running, I can connect from the XP machine both for file and printer access. When I try to connect to one of the other computers in the workgroup, I get the message: the path could not be found. Perhaps I am not clear enough: Before installing XP_Pro, I was able to see and connect between Win2K machines as well as the FBSD both for file shareing and printing. After installing XP, I can ping between the machines, I can map to the shares, I can print from the XP but I can no longer see the machines in the WORKGROUP on Network Neighborhood or Network Places (Childish nomenclature by MS). If I disconnect FBSD from the LAN, the Windows machines can, once again, intercommunicate. Perhaps I should dump the NetBEUI protocol on Windows and just map the shares on each machine. (Kindof a pain, IYAM) Maybe I just don't understand what the relationship should be between the samba machine and the others. The static address (192.168.1.240) of the FBSD machine show up as WORKSTATION and not as COMPUTER_NAME. If I may make an observation, it looks to me that MS is getting kprogressively bloated an unecessarily complicated as it evolves. I am trying to get away from it as much as possible but that is a little difficult as too many "common people" are still brainwashed by MS. Please let me know what specifics I should provide. I have been searching the documentation and the HOW_TO's with little success. [Samba] problems using samba as PDC
Hi list, We are in the process of replacing our current Windows 2k file server with a Debian Linux one running Samba. I am running Samba 2.999+3.0.Alpha21 which is packaged for Debian in the Unstable tree. I believe I have configured everything correctly however when I login from a Windows client it is creating the users profile under there home directory rather than in the profile directory which is stored under their home directory. For example for user mjs the home directory is /home/users/mjs and the profile directory should be /home/users/mjs/profile which already exists with a profile in it. When I login from windows though it creates a new profile under /home/users/mjs. Having said this, when I created the user with pdbedit it told me that the profile location would be \\NUKLEUZ\MJS\profile Script started on Thu Dec 26 09:57:38 2002 nukleuz:~# pdbedit --create --user=mjs new password: retype new password: Unix username:mjs NT username: Account Flags:[U ] User ID/Group ID: 1000/1000 User SID: S-1-5-21-2310093224-2481310486-3802226842-3000 Primary Group SID:S-1-5-21-2310093224-2481310486-3802226842-3001 Full Name:Mitchell,,, Home Directory: \\nukleuz\mjs HomeDir Drive: Logon Script: logon.cmd Profile Path: \\nukleuz\mjs\profile Domain: BLITZ Account desc: Workstations: Munged dial: Logon time: 0 Logoff time: Sat, 14 Dec 1901 07:45:51 GMT Kickoff time: Sat, 14 Dec 1901 07:45:51 GMT Password last set:Thu, 26 Dec 2002 09:58:09 GMT Password can change: 0 Password must change: Thu, 16 Jan 2003 09:58:09 GMT Script done on Thu Dec 26 09:58:26 2002 I have also attached my smb.conf file here # configuration file for samba [global] workgroup = BLITZ netbios name = NUKLEUZ server string = %h server (Samba %v) interfaces = 192.168.1.2 obey pam restrictions = Yes passdb backend = tdbsam, unixsam passwd program = /usr/bin/passwd %u passwd chat = *Enter\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n *Retype\snew\sUNIX\spassword:* %n\n . syslog = 0 log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m max log size = 1000 logon script = logon.cmd logon home = \\%N\%U logon path = \\%N\%U\profile domain logons = Yes time server = yes os level = 65 local master = yes preferred master = Yes domain master = Yes wins support = Yes panic action = /usr/share/samba/panic-action %d invalid users = root hosts allow = 192.168.1.0/24 [netlogon] comment = Network Logon path = /home/intranet/netlogon browseable = No [homes] comment = Home Directories read only = No create mask = 0700 directory mask = 0700 browseable = No # ends smb.conf Can anyone offer any suggestions on where I might be going wrong here? Re: [Samba] Trouble installing samba
Actuallly I am starting to think that this is a distro problem. I am using Mandrake 9.0 on an x86 machine 300 Mhz. When I first downloaded mandrake 9.0 I only burned the first disk, cause I only had one CD R available. I am going to go back and download the other disk and also the supllementary disk, hopefully this will solve the problem. I don't even think I have all of the neccesary compilers, source and header files (good thing my major is CS or I would have know idea what I was talking about 6 months ago!) Any how, thanks for the advice, I know this is out of the range of this email group but if anyone can help me getting mandrake (or if there is another distro that is better for newbies, then by all means I am up for suggestions) you ca reach me at this email ([EMAIL PROTECTED]) Thanx Agian! Hi I've got a samba pdc set up but I've got a strange problem. Everything works fine I can login with the roaming profile BUT I also need a local profile, without the local profile he says that he cannot find the domain name. And the local profile has to be administrator or he doesn't remember my preferences of all my programs and settings. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? Re: [Samba] Trouble installing samba
Have you gotten any replies? This doesn't appear to be a samba problem. This is a compilation problem. Have you tried compiling anything else on this machine? What version of Mandrake are you using. You may just need a new distro. Are you sure you are in the right directory when you run configure and make? Are you running this as root? Re: [Samba] A problem about ICMP Destination Unreachable
Have you gotten any responses? This sounds like a network issue, not a samba issue. As an amateur, I track these problems down by: 1. Looking at the output of tcpdump. 2. Looking at arp -n. 3. Looking into misconfigured DNS. 4. Putting the server into lmhosts or hosts. 5. Looking at route -n. [Samba] A problem about ICMP Destination Unreachable
Hello, I have installed samba in a Linux RedHat 8.0 PC in my lab as a file server. The clients of samba are PCs with MS Windows98. Now I meet some problems, I can see samba server name in Network Neighborhood, but when I click the icon, I get this error message after a long delay: Cannot link to Linuxserver(server name). And I used Ethereal to track the packets to find the problem, I found that there were errors like "ICMP: Destination Unreachable" when packets came from server to client. The same problem occured when I used FTP from client to check the TCP. Ping is ok(I can ping form server to client and client to server), so I don't understand this problem, thank you for your helps and advices. [Samba] diagnosis file suggestion
EHLO! When I configured samba, I was new to samba and firewalls. My problem was not covered in diagnosis file, but probably may be quite common. I'd add a following step to diagnosis file: - Check whether you have DENY entries in /var/log/messages when you try to log in. - if so, add required ACCEPT entries, or remove blocking DENY entries from firewall. -- \___\___ (_(\|,|_|,|_ Gassho!
