Hmmm...

1/ check if samba-swat is properly installed (type "rpm -q samba-swat")

2/ in /etc/xinetd.d/swat, check the "only_from" line. It should read
"only_from = 127.0.0.1"

Then try again connecting to swat...

Happy new year 2003!
Cheers

RE: [Samba] Samba won't start

2003-01-01 Thread Peter Caitens
I gave up on SWAT when I found Webmin worked pretty much the same. I cant
remember if I tried the command line to start it or not. As far as I can
remember I did everything the docs I found said and it still wouldnt run.

I have my Samba configured and runing as a PDC for both Win2K and WinXP
boxes. All of my configuration was done through straight editing of
smb.conf and using Webmin. Webmin does a very good job.

Disclaimer: I am am a linux newbie and still getting used to it. Once I
got something running I tend not to play with it too much in case it breaks
and I cant get it back :-)

Yes, on the client both client.conf and cupsd.conf are unhacked. While
they were given by my distro, it looks like they are just the ones that
come with the cups sources.

> And did you tell it where the printer was?

No, the broadcasts are sufficient. Server broadcasts are on by default.
I can use the printer at work, suspend the laptop, resume at home, and
within 30 seconds it realizes that the work server and printer have
disappeared and the home server and printer have come to life.

If the clients are on a different subnet from the server, you have to do
some special stuff to either send unicast announcements to a list of
clients on the other nets, or have a cups server on a gateway machine
rebroadcast the real server's packets.

It works for me (using LyX, Opera, etc) -- if the app can do "lpr filename"
or "lp filename", the page will go to the printer which the server
designates as the default.

[Samba] New at Samba and need some help

2003-01-01 Thread Randy Morgan
I have been working in the networking industry for about 9 years but am
new to the Samba World. I have a client that I have set up in the
following manner:

1 Windows 2000 server acting as the Domain Controller. It is running
wins and is being used to deal with the netbios resolution on the subnet
for the main office.

2 Samba servers running Linux Mandrake 8.2 and Samba 2.2.7 in the remote
offices being used to pass the netbios traffic to the WINS server in the
main office.

The traffic is being passed via tunnels that are permanently created
between the cisco PIX firewalls located in all three offices.

I am experiencing some instability in the WINS functionality and am not
always successfull in logging in to the domain. I will include a copy
of the global settings of the smb.conf file for both servers. The file
is the same with the exception of the netbios names. The reason I am
only including the global settings is that I have not made any changes
or activated anything in the other sections. Any help in solving my
problem would be greatly appreciated.

[Samba] preexec/postexec scripts

Happy New Year *,

Hopefully someone will have a solution - or at least an explanation -
for this:

(root) preexec and postexec scripts included in smb.conf under [homes]

win2kSP2-clients which is annoying since I (am trying to) use them for
preventing certain users from logging on more than once at a time.

Thanks for your help.

How do I map OSX to Samba file shares? I'm not new to Samba but OSX is a

syntax I can see the forest for the trees.

Hi all,

I'm quite new to Samba and I'm trying to setup a logon script which maps

Now the problem is to detect if the current user is member of a specific

Server: Samba 2.2.5 on Suse Linux 8.1
Client: Win2k SP3

Where to find information about this subject?

If you want to use the redhat admin tools you must stick with
the official redhat samba packages.

probably they have 2.2.7 somewhere on their web pages

If you don't care about the gui tools you can install the rpms from
samba.org and use the command line tools to restart the services
(/etc/init.d/samba restart)

Precisely the problem! The "Klez" virus variants pick a name from the address
book of the infected user and apply that to the "from" field, so the actual
originator is disguised.

Most of the many listservers I am subscribed to already ban attachments
because too many viruses have been spread around accidentally. It is the
easiest solution. Also, since I run Samba to allow Windows and Linux to get
along, I only read this list (and most others) from my Linux box.

2003-01-01 Thread Steve Thom

It might be preferable to back up your workstations
to a share on the server (direct to disk), then include that share in your
backup.

Most recent versions of Windows have a backup
utility included, though not necessarily installed by default. In Windows 98,
you neet to add it via Add and Remove programs, windows setup tab. XP Home is
purported to have it included on the CD.

try changing it on the server

I recommend using smbpasswd from the command line on the server to make
the change.

Umm. Samba is really for file and printer sharing - if that tape drive can look like a file or subdirectory that you can share, then it would help! Since I doubt that is the case, you are left using standard Unix facilities such as tar and cpio, or a commercial backup package for Solaris. However, if Samba is installed on your Solaris system, you should be able to use smbclient (in smbtar mode) to perform backups of Windows PC's to the tape drive on the Solaris box.

I came across a set of scripts that someone posted to the Samba mailing list a couple of years ago, which would take a list of PC and share names, and do a backup of multiple Windows PC's to the tape drive on a Unix system, using smbclient - with each PC being backed up to a separate tar file on the tape basically.

I hope that gets you started in the right direction.

If you don't mind spending money, there are a few cross platform backup solutions (Arkeia?) that will let you access the Solaris tape drive from the Windows PC's

Re: [Samba] Tape Drives

2003-01-01 Thread Trey Nolen
We do this, but we don't share the tape drive...we share the drives on the
other machines on the network. The box with the tape drive mounts the
shares on the other machines to a temporary mount point, backs it up, and
then unmounts it.

Something like this command will mount it:
mount -t smbfs -o username=root,password=blahblah //computer1/c /wkstn-1

Then, just use your regular tape drive tools to backup the /wkstn-1
directory.

Although you could probably share a tape drive, I'm not sure that you could
do it in such a way that it would be usable by any Windows software, so I
think it is easier to do it this way.

Re: [Samba] how to verify the connection between a Samba server and a Windows Xp client?

2003-01-01 Thread Joel Hammer
Just some ideas.

When you stopped your firewall, I don't know what other
security features may be working. There are others.

Is the smbd server running?

What does net view \\WINNY show you?

If this fails, what does:
net view \\ipnumberofwinny show you?

If these attempts fail, then:

It is fun and a great time waster to monitor what the computers are saying
to one another with tcpdump. tcpdump -i interface on the linux server. You
might get a clue. Delays in responses, or requests going to other ports
rather than the port you think should be getting requests.

nmap is sometimes helpful to see what ports are open on your
computer. Be aware then port 137 doesn't show up with nmap as being open,
don't know why.

telnet server 139 might show you if you can reach that port. Note, the
calling telnet will just hang after it gets a reply.

2003-01-01 Thread Michael Gong
Hi, Joe,

I typed :
net use x: \\WINNY\gong

The output is:
System error 53 has occurred.
The network path was not found.

Then I stopped my Kerio firewall, and try the command again.
The output is:
System error 1234 has occurred.

No service is operating at the destination network endpoint on the
remote system.

In either way, it doesn't prompt me to input password.

What may be the problem?

Thanks.
 Michael

I think they should be able to open it with rw-permissions only.

Is this an error or am I wrong ?

the execute bit on a directory is for browsing it. if you haven't it set
