Jerry;

I've alway's used the "Unofficial Samba HOWTO" by David Lechnyr, off the
samba.org website. It's a brilliant document. but as it happens, Section
5.3.3 describes the changes to the XP Registry and it seems to be missing
the entries that have caused my problem.

In the response from Jose Eloy da Costa Junior came the clue. He included
"sealsecurechannel"=dword:0001

It seems this has solved the problem.

Thanks to Jose, and to you too Jerry, for your response.

[Samba] Re: Samba PDC + WinXP = problems fetching remote profiles

2003-08-30 Thread dendik
Hi.

The situation turned out even more mysterious i
seemed before.

I got two new XP boxes, obviously those are XP/pro
without SP1 (did not check that, but it required
much more updates than other XP boxes, and ver
tells it's the same XP/2002/2600). So i tried out
carefully step-by-step installation of those
machines. I stopped when they were in domain mode,
before any RequireSignOrSeal/WebClient/ EAP
patches and they worked fine, a few seconds per
log in, no trouble with downloading/uploading,
just perfect!!!

So i reinstalled XP on one of other 20 machines.
And nothing changed -- files still wont download
even before entering domain mode.

More fun: there are several samba servers in other
networks, and all (now 22) machines can access them
without any problems. I did try to port their smb.conf
to my server, but they have samba 2.2 and i did not
decide yet to make that big retract.

Now i decided to run diff on XP distribs and find
out what the difference is in to see if i can fix
it. Will report after i complete. Anyway, it's
at least very strange behaviour!!

Dendik.

You still have the problem! So sorry.

I installed an XP yesterday. All I had to do was set
network properties and register the SignOrSeal
patch (WinXP_SignOrSeal.reg). I left the default
IEEE 802.1X EAP setting ("Smartcard or other...") and
didn't disable the Web client service either, just
to see what kind of problems other people have.
Well, I had no problem whatsoever. I can login in
and out in a couple of seconds. I can transfer the
Win2K-SP4 (137 MB) in both directions under 15 sec.

I don't know what your problem is but in your shoes
I would try from scratch, with a very uncomplicated
setup - just the server and a freshly installed client
connected via a crossed cable and build from there.
Chances are that something completely different is
your problem, but you need to find it out slowly
and systematically.

> result.

I wonder what other problem in client network
configuration can be masked by switching EAP and
Web client off. I've seen the problem only on an
XP client, a laptop. It wasn't severe. Opening a
share or a shared subdirectory would stall for several
seconds although it takes no time on other clients.
When I disabled Web client and EAP those symptoms
were gone.

With my new XP box I also tried and disabled both
EAP and Web client. No difference. Same login and
transfer speed.

EAP and Web client obviously do not need to be a
problem on an otherwise correctly set up server
and clients communicating through decent wires and
switches.

I'm afraid no one can help you but you yourself.
Go slowly from simple to more complex. Be sure what
works and you'll find out what the problem was.
Perhaps you should first test how fast ftp client
works.

Can you please try the rpms from samba.org, not the SuSE ones.
I believe the SuSE Samba rpms had a bug w.r.t. this problem.

Hopefully someone from SuSE will comment.

[Samba] W2k, SP4 and Domain logon

2003-08-30 Thread Damiano G. Preatoni
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi all.
Yesterday I had the funny idea of upgrading all my Windows 2000 Professional
worksations (20 W2k boxes more or less) to SP4.

I run Samba 2.2.8a on a glorious RedHat 6.2, and after the endless
download-and-reboot I found with no W2K client able to logging in.

I skimmed the mail archives, tried a bunch of suggestion from really a lot of
postings (a big thank to all who contributed, I should have penciled down a
list...) and here I am with half a solution.

SERVER SIDE:
check your smb.conf, in particular the [profiles] section. Mine says:

[profiles]
path = /home/profile
read only = no
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0700
force directory mode = 0700
inherit permissions = yes
nt acl support = yes
map system = yes
map hidden = yes
browseable = no
comment = User profile directory on %L (Samba %v PDC)

Note that my server is acting as a PDC:
[global]
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -d /dev/null -g workstations -s
/bin/false -M %u
create mask = 0664
dead time = 0
debug level = 3
default case = lower
dfree command = /sbin/diskfree
directory mask = 0770
dns proxy = no
domain logons = yes

encrypt passwords = yes
hide dot files = yes
hosts allow = 192.168.1. 127.
interfaces = 192.168.1.250/255.255.255.0
load printers = no

log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
log level = 2
logon drive = G:
logon home = \\%L\%u
logon path = \\%L\profiles\%u
logon script = logon.bat
max log size = 50
name resolve order = host wins bcast

security = user
server string = UAGB Primary Domain Controller (Samba %v PDC)
socket options = TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_LOWDELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd
time server = yes
unix password sync = yes
username level = 8
username map = /etc/samba/smbusers
wins support = yes
workgroup = UAGB
null passwords = no

CLIENT SIDE:
Here comes the workload... one day ot the other I will switch to LTSP
terminals...
It seems that with SP4 and the so-called "fix" for the blaster worm the way in
which a W2K client works changed abruptly.

Anyway, roll up your sleeves and

login as Administrator
Go to System/Network Identification and place the machine into a WORKGROUP,
leaving the domain. Don't waste your time rebooting.

Go to Control Panel/Network and Dial-up Connections, pick your LAN connection
(should be called "Local Area Connection") and go to Properties of the TCP/IP
protocol.

Set Preferred DNS: 192.168.1.250 (i.e. the samba server IP, it acts also as a
caching DNS)

Click on "Advanced", go to DNS tab and set
Append primary and connection specific DNS suffixes
Append parent suffixes of the primary DNS suffix

other checkboxes/radiobuttons should be unchecked.

Go to WINS tab. Set the WINS server IP to the IP of the samba server.
DISABLE "Enable LMHOSTS lookup"
ENABLE "Enable NEtBIOS over TCP/IP"

I didn't touch the "Options" tab. No IPSEC, No filtering.

Close everything, go back to System/Network Identification
Make sure that, clicking on "More", the domain where your boxes are is
specified. I put in "dipbsf.uninsubria.it", which is mine.
UNCHECK the "Change primary DNS suffix when domain membership changes"
checkbox.

Now click the "Domain" radio button, and rejoin the domain.

Close everything, and this time reboot.

I advise, after the reboot, to log in as Administrator again, and to launch
(Window/R, or Start/Run) LUSRMGR.MSC and to remove "Domain Users" from the
"Users" group, and adding it instead to the "Power Users" group.

This way my poor W2k boxes are still able to join the domain and next Monday
users will be able to login.
Still, the [netlogon] share is unaccessible, and logon script processing still
doesn't work. My logon script does only a net time \\malaussene /set /yes,
and mounts six or seven shares.
At present I copied it in the most used share, and I will say to my users to
manually mount this and launch MOUNT.BAT.

Any further suggestion will be welcome!

BTW: I read about an almost-up-to-date HOWTO that Scott Phelps promised to
write about PDC, LDAP and so on... any news?

Thanks to all!

domain local groups in NT4 (and mixed mode AD domains) are
only available to DC's. So samba would never see these groups.
However, domain local groups are available to domain members
in a native mode AD domain so samba does see these.

I'm not sure you example will work anyways. What you are
descibing sounds more like universal groups in AD.

With Samba 2.2, set the port to 445 (it's a command line option) and
don't run nmbd. You cannot disable netbios compleatly, if you are
running as a domain member, as it will still use netbios in part of it's
communication with the DC.

With Samba 3.0, there is a smb.conf option, which also makes avoid
netbios in the client and server ends.

Log level 10 would be very useful - especially if you can
pinpoint the response that gives the "disk full" problem.

I need some help...I upgraded SAMBA on my Solaris 8 Server (sparc) from version 2.2.2
to 2.2.8a ( samba-2.2.8a-sol8-sparc-local ), and now it's giving me an error when I
try to open SWAT.
I get the following error:

ld.so.1: swat: fatal: libpopt.so.0: open failed: No such file or
directory

Please Help !!
