RE: [Samba] \ as winbind separator not possible?

2003-11-03 Thread Simon Leung
Hi Jens,
I came across this problem before, my solution is comment the "winbind
separator =..." in smb.conf and restart your winbind daemon.
You will find that " \ " is the default separator of your user info
afterwards

Cheers

Hi!

I have in the smb.conf a backslash as winbind separator; I used testparm to
check my config though and it says that I am only allowed to use one

[Samba] New Linux Samba server

2003-11-03 Thread Guess Logi
 Folks,
Is it possible to set up new Linux samba server within one existing Linux samba domain?

if yes, how would be smb.conf looks like ? ( what parameters need to be set yes/no in
globel )

Below is current smb.conf for existing Linux Samba server ?

domain master = yes
local master = yes
preferred master = yes
security = user

Below smb.conf would work with existing server setup ( as indicated above )?

domain master = no
local master = yes
preferred master = no
security = domain

Please advise..i really do want to create collision between two server !

Thanks...

[Samba] Fwd: Samba semantics error?

2003-11-03 Thread Mike Fedyk
Hello,

I have this bug report that I have filed. Is there any specific reason why
samba behaves this way, and doesn't use the unix semantics? Since this is
even more restrictive than unix semantics, I'm more inclined to call it a
bug until I know it's supposed to be this way.

Any ideas?

Severity: normal

Hi there,

I have this directory:

drwxrws---2 adminssh96 Oct 30 17:09 .
drwxrwsr-x4 adminssh 112 Oct 30 17:08 ..
-r-xr-1 mfedyk ssh 12M Oct 29 15:40 mozilla-win32-1.5-installer.exe
-r-xr-1 adminssh 0 Oct 30 18:15 test.txt

Under linux, I can remove any file I'd like as long as I'm either the admin
user, or in the ssh group.

But under windows through samba as the admin user, I can't remove the
mozilla installer file, but I can remove the test.txt file. And vise versa
with the mfedyk user through samba (but can remove the file as expected from
a bash shell).

I have tried the dos filemodes config option, but that requires the file to
give group write permissions, and I explicitly don't want to do that on this
share.

[Samba] Samba is not identifying a print service on win 2000 client

2003-11-03 Thread rajugv
Hai All,

We have WIN NT machine and Win 2000 as its client.
The Win 2000 client is having a printer attached to it and that printer is
configured as network printer on WIN NT machine.

We are unable to print from a remote AIX machine on to the printer connected
to WIN NT Machine from AIX host.
The smbclient -L -U is not identifying the
print service on WIN 2000 Client.

If we are having a win 98 machine connected to win nt server and if printer
attached to win 98 machine
it is working fine.

Please solve this issue

I am new to samba.

Windows uses one TCP/IP connection to connect to a single server.
Windows NT Terminal server had a registry switch to make it spit it up
as one-per-user, as there ware problem with only 1000 open files (or
something like that). MS fixed their bug, so removed the setting.

The problem is that unlike NT, Samba is not multithreaded - it deals
with the operations from the client in a strictly serial fashion.
This is usually fine for a single PC, and becosue multiple client PCs
all use their own seperate TCP/IP connection, Samba scales really
well.

However, when all the work is on one TCP/IP connection, all the
changes between user (seteuid calls) and even worse blocking due to
simple disk IO is serialised. Ie, other unreated operations cannot
complete. (I think that the fcntl() issues might also make this even
worse, but jra would know better).

By forcing Windows to make multiple TCP/IP connections to the Samba
server, we get back to the situation we had with multiple windows
client PCs.

Much of the work on Samba4 is to create a compleatly asyncronous
design, which can cope with this stuff very well, but until then, we
need the workarounds...

Can you explain this a bit more? I'm wondering if some of the trouble
we've been having is caused by this. (We are using Samba 3.0 as a
profile/general purpose file server for several Citrix MetaFrame XP

I think you might be hitting two of the nastiest bugs with that combination.

Firstly, there are issues with Solaris 8, and TDB locks, for which
there is a solaris kernel patch (it's an fcntl issue). But more
importantly, there is an issue caused by the way Windows Terminal
Server clients connect - they all use the same smbd. This causes all
their operations to be serialised, even worse if something blocks.

The best solution is to call your system by as many names as possible.
For example, call it by one name per user, particularly for roaming
profiles. (So make a user's profile path/homedir
\\zeus-username\username or the like). Use DNS (with a samba wins
server set to 'dns proxy') or fixed entires in your wins.dat, or an
lmhosts file, to force the multiple names. Samba doesn't mind what it
gets called.

[Samba] Samba-Citrix compatability

2003-11-03 Thread DAVIES Rob
G'day,

We are having problems when connecting to our Solaris 8 server Zeus from our Windows
2000 Terminal Servers. We are running Samba 2.2.8a on the unix box and are finding
that from time to time people are having difficulty opening files from shares on this
server. They also have difficulty mapping network drives. It reports errors such are
"file doesn't exist". However, we have had no such problems from our Windows
workstations, so it looks to be Citrix / Terminal Server related. It appears to be
related to sessions remaining there at the back-end after they disconnect, hence when
they reconnect it gets confused. If we kill the smbd processes at the back-end that
correspond to those old connections they are able to connect again. We had the same
problem with Samba 2.2.2, and upgrading to 2.2.8a didn't help. A number of people have
reported similar problems in Google Groups. Is this a known bug / issue ? If so, is
there a patch or release of Samba that would resolve this issue ?

[Samba] getting started

2003-11-03 Thread Greg Andrews
Hello all,

Excuse the very newbie questions, and yes I am reading or have read the
man and or help files, however am still having trouble.

I have two red hat boxes ( a 7.3 and a 9.0 ) with which I am
experimenting.

The 7.3 works a treat ( well at least I can see it on windoze machine on
the same network) but the same cannot be said for the 9.0 box.

Differences ( none ) I have copied the 7.3 smb.conf file to the 9.0 box
( and of course turned off the smb process on the 7.3 box but still no
joy.

I am missing something obvious but what ???

Yes the machines are on the same subnet and yes I can ping them. One
works the other dont :(

Do you have to bind the network card to samba in some way ( my novell
background showing ) ? If so why does the 7.3 machine work ?

I can run swat and also see the smbd and nmbd deamons running but just
cant connect to the beatie via any windoze boxes ( the ultimate aim of
the exercise ).

Any and all help appreciated.

Re: [Samba] HowTo Chapter12 Group Mapping and LDAP

2003-11-03 Thread John H Terpstra
Matt,

You must map NT Groups to UNIX groups. In particular, only Domain groups
(not local groups in the Domain) that have been mapped to a UNIX group (no
matter where it is stored - LDAPsam or tdbsam) will be available for
domain client use.

If you want to map the NT Domain Group called "Domain Users" to the UNIX
"users" group, you will need to run:

net groupmap modify ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=users

if the NT Group does not exist in your LDAPsam, yo uwill need to run:

net groupmap add ntgroup="Domain Users" unixgroup=users rid=51x

Where 51x is the well known RID for the Domain Users group. You can obtain
this from the latest Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf available from:

http://samba.org/~jht/HOWTO

I hope this helps to clarify the issue for you.

Another alternative...
- set up as security = domain.
- Then add the samba machine to your domain/AD via smbpasswd ( or net if
using 3.x )...This creates a machine account in AD for your machine.

- Next...You still need Unix accounts on the box that match your NT/2000
logins...The username has to match, not the password. Or you can use
entries in username map option. Set up as needed.

- Use file permissions and Unix groups to control access to resorces, just
like always.

- Configure shares to grant access based on Unix login/group membership as
before.

This way, there's no need for an smbpasswd file. As long as the user
authenticates against the domain, Samba will grant access ( based on share
config/file permissions). It never looks for a password, just if the user
is authenticated to the domain, and if the user should be granted access
to the resource.
This works in 2.2.x as well as 3.x

AFAIK, windbind is more for not needing to manually create the Unix users
in the first place. Well, that's a generalized statement...There's more
to windbind than that

But it does sound like security = domain is what you needWorks here.

[Samba] No problem.

2003-11-03 Thread Stefan G. Weichinger

Just to make a positive remark for a difference:

I rebuilt my nice little test-system today.
It´s a 350 MHz Pentium II (in words: TWO) with 640 MB of RAM, good old
ASUS mainboard, 3com NIC ... nice oldschool stuff ...

It was set up once ago using a copy of Suse 7.x, upgraded to 8.2 Pro,
then I took hold of it.

Now it runs a linux-2.6.0-test9 kernel, hosts a Samba 3.0.0 PDC (with
OpenLDAP, for sure), and does the backup via Amanda
2.4.4p1-snapshot-sumthin

Until today it contained two harddisks, 80G and 20G, today I added
another 20G left over from the PI 133 (in words: ONE) I configured as
ADSL-gateway.

Massive repartitioning and data-moving necessary.
Temporary moving data to the not-so-shiny-anymore WinXP-box next to
it.

P IV (in words: FOUR) 2.66 GHz, half a gig`o`ram, 120 GB hdd, ...

Movin large amounts of videofiles from and to the sambabox.

---

The XP-box gets slow and unresponsive.
Sambabox opens another shell without takin too much notice.

Seems like I hear XP-box coughing under the desk ...
Sambabox crispy and awake.

---

Thank you, Samba-developers.

Ok, maybe the kernel does its work, too...
Or: Sure, the kernel does its work fine.

But Samba definitely kicks my ass again and again.

Just to let you know.

How does it effect if the printer section is left out complety?

Could you send the UHPClean to my other address: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
because this box capacity is very small and it fills out so rapidly at least
after I joiden to samba mailing list.

Times are synchronised between Linux and those w2k workstations with help
of: time server = yes in the smb.conf file and the netlogon.bat holds in the
"net time \myPDC /set /yes" statement which is handled just right.

Has anybody experienced that is this still a problem with Samba 3.x
versions?

I had the same problem and went absoultely nuts!! The problem seemed to
be with the print spooler. If you shut down the spooler and start it
back up at regular intervals, the problem seems to go away.
I had another user help me and he sent me a file that Microsoft gave him
called UHPClean. What it does is monitor the log offs and then force
the registry hives closed, which lets go of your NTUSER.DAT files. I
have not had a problem since!!
If you want a copy of it, let me know!

Also, MAKE SURE YOUR TIMES ARE IDENTICAL ON ALL MACHINES This will
make some for some strange roaming profile problems.

[Samba] HowTo Chapter12 Group Mapping and LDAP

2003-11-03 Thread Matt Pusateri
Hello,

I have a question about the documentation of the Samba Howto's. Specifically, I am
not able to understand how group mapping ties into LDAP. I believe I understand the
concept of unix to windows group mapping as laid out in chapter 12 as it relates a
tdbsam, but get confused when dealing with a ldapsam back-end. There is a note listed
" When the passdb back-end uses LDAP (ldapsam) it is the administrators'
responsibility to create the essential Domain Groups, and assign each its default
RID." I am not sure what this note is to infer? Does "net groupmap" handle things or
do I manually have to configure via LDIF entries?

I have read chapters 1-12, 21, 25 of the howtos as well as Samba PDC LDAP howto by
Ignacio Coupeau. Is there another document I am missing or am I just not getting it?
I have not posted config files or system specifics because I feel this is more a
problem understanding the concepts not configuring the system. If someone could either
point me in the right direction or explain what I am missing I would be very much
appreciate it(yes I realize that was an extremely open-ended plea for help). It seems
to me that the documentation regarding Samba & LDAP was very verbose up to this point,
but then trails off a little bit in chapter 12 regarding configuring LDAP(maybe it's
just me?) Anyhow thanks go out to all those on the documentation project.

Do you still have any problems after you scrub the LDAP replica, make a new
reaplica and make samba use a DN *not* used by the replication process?

Only the 'read only replicat, try here...' reply will cause samba to
use the master. This means you need to use something other than the
replicator DN for samba.

Many of the other bugs are, as you correctly mentioned, in bugzilla,
and will be dealt with when people get time.

I found the CachedLogonsCount registry settings in the Windows client
and set them to 0 (zero), but it had no effect. The deleted user could
still log on. On top of that, no new users can log on so something
seems amiss.

The windows client is cachign the logons. It's controlled by a
registry key. CacheLogonsCount or something like that.

[Samba] xp machines and samab 2.2.8a problem

2003-11-03 Thread Linda Normann

I am running Samba 2.2.8a on solaris 5.7 machines.

I have had 2 subnet working just fine for years.

I'm trying to add a 3rd subnet.

I am having a problem with my XP machines on a third subnet.

I have changed the registry so:

requiresignorseal = 0

and

requiresecurechannel = 0

and rebooted.

and

Enable NetBIOS over TCPIP is set.

I have two XP machines one with NETBEUI install and one without NETBEUI

installed

the one with NETBEUI installed can onyt see machines with NETBEUI install in

the network places (no samba servers)

and the XP machine without NETBEUI installed gets the following error when

trying to enter the domain:

"Mydomain is not accessiable. You might not have permission to use this

netowkr resource. Contact the administrator of

this server to find out if you have permissions.

The account is not authorized to log in from this station."

There is a 2000 machine running just fine on this subnet.

SAMBA SERVERS:

1st Machine): SOL001

here's the smb.conf of the domain master browse (wins server) -

192.9.200.252

2nd Machine): SOL002

read only = no

3rd Machine): SOL003

Here's the smb.con of the new subnet machine - 192.9.206.12

(this is the samba server I am having problems with the XP machines)

[global]

log file = /tmp/samba/log

Re: [Samba] I joined this list today

2003-11-03 Thread rruegner
hi , i agree i had to add 3 antivirus and antispam filters to get valid
posts again,
but study the funktion of this virus and you will get know that from my
point of few there is nothing
that listmaster can do against faked senders from infected computers.
The main problem are this brain fucked admins that sends out ndr out from
their aintivirus gateways.
this messages are just spam ( i know this was meant in a good way )
but it shows that many collegues configure their apps out of the box and
dont think about traffic produced by their bla bla you have sent a virus
messages.
infected mails should be crunched and no message should be sent to the
sender anyway in this days.
if people use microshits mail stuff ( i use outlook express *rofl )
they should be tek enough to use current antivirus files, and have an daily
eye
on symantec.com , but this never will work global *
i suggest to kill the evils system where ever possible and produce more
security in www
i love this political disputes *lol
i think we have to live with spam and viri in the future , but on the other
hand this produces new security
code in permanent ( so take it as a chance )

[Samba] Problem w Samba on Alpha: No filenames > 80 chars displayed on Win Clients

2003-11-03 Thread Ulrich Harttig
Hello all,

I have a problem with the display of filenames > 80 chars when served by
Samba-3.0.0 to Windows clients.
System: GNU/Linux debian 3.0.1 upgraded to testing/unstable on ALPHA processor
(XP-1000),
Kernel: custom 2.4.22 + acl support (kernel pkg could only be compiled by
downgrading binutils to 2.12.90 & using gcc-3.0)
Samba: Samba-3.0.0.final.deb (testing/unstable)
smb.conf: excerpt see below

I could not found any hints in the Samba documentation that would explain this
filename restriction. There seems to be no problem with long filenames with
Samba on i386 machines, so I suspect there might be platform issue behind it.

Any pointers and hints would be appreciated

Thanks
Ulrich Harttig

[Samba] Samba and private shares

I'm running samba 2.5 on a FreeBSD box using winbind to do authentication

[Samba] Samba configuration

2003-11-03 Thread Distribution Lists

I'm trying to config a Linux box to integrate into a windows network using
pam_smb and samba.

Ive set it up so that using pam_smb I can get the user to log onto the
linux desktop with their NT id and password.

The only problem is once the user is logged on they need to be able to
access shared resources disk, printers etc... without the need to
reauthenticate to the domain, i.e. use a cache password. Is this possible ?

Thanks

Most of these lists are unmonitored in regards to a someone guarding
what comes in... (this list may be different but it's true for most
others). I'm receiving mail from about 13+ mailing lists, so I get tons
of that junk...

just create some filters in your client.

I'm copying files from an Compressed NTFS partition to a samba share. The files seem

[Samba] Change PDC IP Address and moving them to a separated network

2003-11-03 Thread Fabiano Felix
Hello All,

I need to move my PDC to a separated network (your IP address will be
changed), and I have a question: my machines will be find the PDC?
What's the best method to make it?
I have two ideas:
- I make a Samba BDC and keep them into the same network that the
stations;
- I put the server address into the firewall (virtual IP) and redirect
the requests for the separated network (I have a question about this:
will the PDC go to return the requests correctly?).

Some help is appreciated...

Regards,

[Samba] Q: logging other existing domain users to samba nework

2003-11-03 Thread Sergei Zuyev
I faced a problem which I cannot resolve and would be very obliged if you
could point me to a right resource (I browsed a lot of forums and HOWTO's but
still enable to find an answer)

Configuration:
Mandrake Linux 9.1 box running samba 2.2.7 controling my home network
A Windows 2000 Pro laptop,
a few other Win and Lin boxes

Problem: my wife has an existing remote domain account on her laptop, I want
her to be able to use a public share on my home network and local printers.

If I join her to the home domain, she has access to the resources of our home
net, but she cannot read her emails and cannot access her encripted documents
as she's no longer logged as the remote domain user.

I that possible to grant her access to samba network when she's logged as the
remote domain user (not being actually connected to that network)? Other
windows machines configured as members of the home domain have no problems
connecting, but my wife in the above configuration gets access denied.

Restriction: I cannot make my home network a member of the remote network
which is actually the network of my wife's enterprise. I tried to mimic the
interprise network name, but this does not help - SID is different anyhow...

Thanks a lot!

[Samba] No machine account possible?

2003-11-03 Thread Christian H. Kuhn
Hi all,

Yesterday, i changed from samba 2.2.3 to samba 3.0, and also i changed
the machines which samba is running on. Samba worked and should work
as a PDC. It runs on a Debian sid, the test client is a notebook with
XP Professional.

Yesterday, immediately after migrating, everything worked fine. Even
after several reboots, i could logon as a domain user, and i could use
the shares. Today, i can't.

To find the error, i followed the diagnosis on
http://samba.sernet.de/diagnosis.html#toc9. For it is in german, i
will shortly name the successful tests: testparm, ping (both
directions), smbclient -L, nmblookup __SAMBA__, nmblookup -d 2 '*',
nmblookup -B client '*', local smbclient '\\server\share'. What not
worked is a net view \\pdchome from the client.

If i try to change name and domain on the client, i use \\pdchome\root
as user, and i get "wrong parameter" and no entry in the server
logs. If i try a smbpasswd -a -m unterwegs on the server, i get
home:/etc/samba# smbpasswd -a -m unterwegs

[Samba] PDC can't get SID

2003-11-03 Thread Kent L. Nasveschuk
Hello,
I'm attempting to install and run Samba 3.0 with ldap backend. The
system that it is on is Redhat 8.0. I get this error message when
attempting to get the SID.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# /usr/local/samba/bin/net getlocalsid
[2003/11/03 15:00:15, 0] utils/net.c:net_getlocalsid(414)
Can't fetch domain SID for name: WHSF1

The smbd and nmbd are running, any suggestions? I did a similar
installation on a Slackware 9 system without a hitch. Had no problem
obtaining a SID for the system.

What version of Samba ? There was an issue with Excel files
on 3.0.0 that is fixed in the 3.0.1pre release code (available
as source from samba.org).

[Samba] info on excel files

2003-11-03 Thread Jack Malone
Did not get any info the first time. Has anyone else seen this the problem
below with excel files stored on samba server.

thanks

jack

I have a samba server running here at work. The quality depart shares
word/excel/access files on the server so they all have access to them. We
have a problem with excel files that have links to other excel files all
shared on the samba server. when they open or save files that have links to
other excel files it says there is not enough memory. just wondering if
anyone else has run into this an knows a fix/work around for it. It seems
to work right , just that the error message comes up every they go go to
save or open a file from the server.

Re: [Samba] Slow reads of large video files with a few clients connected

2003-11-03 Thread rruegner
Hi, i had really big files on my samba up to 2 gigs and more , no problem
here
with samba 3, i also have a video server ,
in my samba files are stored from xawdecode with avi divx, and ffmpeg in
several
formats ( ffmpeg is really the best solution ,try it ).
After all smb network protokoll is as it is, but there is other thing which
might relate
which partition type do you use? i recommend ext3.
and there are many things which you have to know about mpeg, avi files which
related in their performance with different kind of players.
You can also get in problems with your network /100 Mb maybe to slow
try 1000 Mb and if you have more clients reading and writing same files
( maybe there is a firewall involved ? )
Did set the right hdparm for you storage device? ( does it use dma ? )
you should use raid 1 or stripped devices with a valid raid scsi or ide raid
controller devices
this will speed up read writing act on the storage.
So you see there a many thing involved in performance not even smb you have
to check
all this things to tune up
study perfomance features in smb.conf this may help too.
kill other deamons on the samba server which you might not need.
top will give you info about processes which are running.
After all i would use ffmpeg to catch my files from /dev/video direct to the
linux machine
there are good projects on the web which have a full working multimedia
solution on linux
mythtv freevo etc.
at last do you use latest kernel and samba versions?
My setup is based on knoppix a wintv card and it works like charme for
streaming storing
playing any kind of multimedia files.

[Samba] Samba new server in existing domain/sever

2003-11-03 Thread Guess Logi
Sirs,

I have Linux Samba Server with following "global" smb.conf file.
This server is acting as PDC with CAT domain name. We have window 2000 PC's connect to
this server. We had changed some registry for win2000 PC so it can join the domain
CAT. I believe that was required.

Now, my question is, can I set up new Linux Samba Serve even though I have one server
acting as domain?

What are necessary changes I need to make on following smb.conf file?

My initial goal is to test new sever with one of win2000 PC which already exist in CAT
domain. If I can't test within domain, what are steps I need to follow to change
domain/workgroup on PC?

What are minimum parameters I can use just for testing purpose from below smb.conf?
If I need to change workgroup/domain name, do I also need to change registry back to
as it was before (we have changed registry so pc can join CAT domain)?

Here is my main smb.conf for CAT server. (share is not listed here)

Thanks in advance for you help….

[Samba] question about ADS sync

2003-11-03 Thread Ben Kim

Hi,

I have a question about Samba's capability. I couldn't find answer from
web searches so want to try it here.

We use samba as file server in a mixed mode w2k active directory domain.
The problem is that each time a user changes his/her windows password,
admins have to update samba password manually. We want to avoid this, and
want Samba to automatically sync the user password with the directory
server.

I checked winbind, but it seems to give all domain users access to the
samba server. We would like to limit the samba account to only a few
selected windows users. We want them to deal only with the windows account
without having to ask admins to update the smbpasswd.

>From web searches, there's no clear picture of what the possibilities are.
It appears if I use 'encrypt passwords' option, I have to keep a local
copy of smbpasswd, and automatic sync is impossible. (We don't want to use
plaintext passwords.)

My question is, does anyone know a way to let Samba do automatic sync with
windows passwords?

I wonder if moving to samba 3.0 will solve this problem. Does anyone have
some experience in this regard?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ben

Yeah. Sorry. Basically, I can see the winbind users on the linux

Here's a paste of the current state of my hopelessness:

Unfortunately, no. So I'll have to keep the realms section below I
guess.

How are the users/groups laid out in AD?
Well, that problem seems to have gone away - I reboot the machine and

this.

Have you setup pam_winbind.so ?
I have it copied to /lib/security/ where all the pam modules are. Is
there more to setting it up than that?

Thanks, I'll look that up.

[Samba] samba-3.0.0: bugs in PDC/BDC mode with LDAP

2003-11-03 Thread Joerg Pulz
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

hi,

i've send this mail to the samba-technical list last week, but there was
no reaction, so i try it here. sorry, if samba-technical was not the
right place for these things..

- ---

october the 25th. i updated our samba servers to 3.0.0 and i found some
bugs during the whole week, which i couldn't fix alone, cause i'm no good
programmer.

first my infrastructure:

3 hosts
all running FreeBSD-5.1 on ix86
all have OpenLDAP-2.1.22 and nss_ldap

1 host configured as PDC and LDAP master
2 hosts configured as BDC and LDAP replicator

[Profiles] are stored on the PDC.

the complete setup was working for a long time with samba-2.2.8a

i compiled samba-3.0.0 with '--with-ldap --with-ldapsam --with-quotas
- --with-sys-quotas --with-ads --with-syslog --with-utmp --with-msdfs
- --with-krb5=/usr --with-acl-support --with-libiconv'

configure and make was running without problems. converting the current
LDAP tree was also no problem. everything was fine and very fast.

the first problem i saw was an error when logging of from a
windows2000-SP4 domain member. the profile data wasn't written back.
the logfile shows a "PANIC" line like this:
- -> PANIC: sys_[sg]et_vfs_quota: called with NULL pointer
sorry, don't know if it was "set" or "get".
i recompiled samba without --with-sys-quotas and everything was fine
again.

the next problem i saw was another error message in the log's similar to
#281 in bugzilla
the complete message is:
-
[2003/10/28 20:21:12, 1] smbd/service.c:make_connection_snum(698)
ts3 (172.25.1.96) connect to service Profiles initially as user tester

smbldap_open: cannot access LDAP when not root..

[2003/10/28 20:21:12, 0] passdb/pdb_ldap.c:ldapsam_search_one_group(1612)
ldapsam_search_one_group: Problem during the LDAP search: LDAP error:

(Insufficient access)ts3 (172.25.1.96) connect to service netlogon
initially
as user tester (uid=12345, gid=3456) (pid 25364)
-

this error isn't shown at every login, it only occurs sometimes, but it
prevents the windows host to correctly load and save the profile, which
leads to errors at the next login to this host. the options 'profile acls
= yes' and 'nt acl support = yes' are set for the [profiles] share and
'profile acls = yes' is shown by 'testparm -v' but 'nt acl support = yes'
isn't shown, i don't know why.

the next problem is the same as already mentioned in #576 and #623 in
bugzilla.
my procedure to create a user/machine was: run a script manually to add a
user/machine entry with posix attributes to the LDAP directory and later
add samba attributes with 'pdbedit' or 'smbpasswd'. this procedure was
working fine in samba-2.2.8a.
this isn't working in 3.0.0 anymore. if the user/machine is already in the
LDAP directory the error is:
-
ldapsam_add_sam_account: Adding new user
init_ldap_from_sam: Setting entry for user: test$
ldapsam_modify_entry: Failed to add user
dn= uid=test$,ou=Computer,dc=domain,dc=de with: Already exists

ldapsam_add_sam_account: failed to modify/add user with uid = test$
(dn = uid=test$,ou=Computer,dc=domain,dc=de)
Unable to add machine! (does it already exist?)
-
if the user/machine account is in the directory with posix but without
samba attributes and i try to join the domain, the error is the same.
i think it's the same function that is used for both cases.

if the account is NOT in the LDAP directory the error is:
-
ldapsam_add_sam_account: Adding new user
init_ldap_from_sam: Setting entry for user: test$
ldapsam_modify_entry: Failed to add user
dn= uid=test$,ou=Computer,dc=domain,dc=de with: Object class violation
object class 'sambaSamAccount' requires attribute 'sambaSID'
ldapsam_add_sam_account: failed to modify/add user with uid = test$
(dn = uid=test$,ou=Computer,dc=domain,dc=de)
Unable to add machine! (does it already exist?)
-

so a possible solution for the first error could be to add an smb.conf
option similar to 'ldap delete dn = yes/no' maybe something like
'ldap add/create dn = yes/no'.
so, if 'ldap add/create dn' is set to 'yes', the complete entry will be
created, otherwise only samba attributes will be added to the existing
entry.

the second error looks to me like a 'two step used' where 'one step is
needed'.
clearly:
-
- -> first step
dn:
add: objectClass
objectClass: sambaSamAccount
- -

- -> the error occurs here

- -> second step
dn:
add: sambaSID
sambaSID: S-
- -

-

[Samba] Slow reads of large video files with a few clients connected

2003-11-03 Thread Samba Mail List Archive
Hi.
I am configuring samba as a video server and was able to tune it up to the
point where it works great. Since existing configuration has Windows
Servers, I may always compare the performance.

There are two problems at the moment.

1. When I have four client writing (encoders) and one reading(player), my
reading client is getting data smoothly. It looks like my reading client
tries to cache data first and then play it back. It is not happenning when
I have 2 clients writing.
It would be relevant to say, that each client and server are on dedicated
network and each one has 100 full-duplex connection.

2. One of my clients is "Adobe Premiere" and I am loosing performance,
while reading file from Samba. It happens even when my server is dedicated
to this client only.

My configuration

--Intel 800Mhz
--1Gb of Ram
--Red Hat 8.0
--Samba 3.0 ( older version behaves even worse)

Have somebody faced similar issues or configured Samba for really large
reads and writes?

Thank you,

Gene

Re: [Samba] Installing samba 3.0 on redhat 9

2003-11-03 Thread rruegner
Hi, if you just upgrade an you have no valid files on the server which cant
be coruppted
you can use rpm -i --force --nodeps packetnames
on suse this works fine to upgrade from 2.28a to version 3 with rpm packs
But be carefull and keep clear that youre able to rollback if this fails

Check you indexes on the OpenLDAP server.
Look at the searches being made. Make sure you

I have changed the registry so:
requiresignorseal = 0
and
requiresecurechannel = 0
and rebooted.

[Samba] Samba-3.0.1pre1 and LDAP

2003-11-03 Thread Kristyan Osborne
Hiya,

I have recently upgrade samba to 3.0.1pre1 from alpha3-19. The upgrade went well with
no real problems, except .

I have noticed today that the load on the LDAP server is extremely high. CPU usage on
slapd is anywhere between 10%-80%. At one point to day everything came to a grinding
halt. The only difference between I can think of is the samba upgrade. This is with an
average load of about 300 users.

Can anyone think why samba is causing slapd to max out??

Cheers

I never installed samba3 from rpm but it looks like you need libacl-devel
(or acl-devel, don´t know the package name).

Hi , your smb logs seems fine to me, but you should better upgrade to samba
3
have you checked the ip of win xp can you ping samba ?
have you done nmblookup to winxp
oplocks are sometimes the problem with win xp
see example for samba 3

Did you enable the DNS lookup during compile? If so then you can get
rid of the [realms] section below.
Unfortunately, no. So I'll have to keep the realms section below I
guess.
|
| [realms]
| LTSP.FOO.BAR = {
...

How are the users/groups laid out in AD?
Well, that problem seems to have gone away - I reboot the machine and
see all my domain users in the KDM loginwindow. wbinfo -u confirms
this.

| Now, as root, I can change users to any domain user I want to
without

| though I'm using a known-good password for that account. BIG
problem #2.

Have you setup pam_winbind.so ?
I have it copied to /lib/security/ where all the pam modules are. Is
there more to setting it up than that?
| I'm sure there's something simple that needs to be changed and all
will

| this: how do I automatically map the home directory of a domain
user to
| their AD-defined home directory (//ltsp-fs1/staff/fred <-->
| /home/LTSP/fred, for example)? I want to have no local storage for
| domain users on the linux box.

See pam_mount.so and smbfs (or patches for the newer cifsvfs).
Thanks, I'll look that up.

Mike

[Samba] $HOME in magic script

2003-11-03 Thread Alexey Lobanov
Hello all.

I can see that "magic scripts" are run in some mixed (between root and real user)
shell
environment.

Share definition is got from "SambaMagicTray" utility:

[autoscript]
comment = special directory for SAMBA-Magic Script
   path = /var/magic
   read only = no
   locking = yes
   public = yes
   writeable = yes
   magic script = magic
   magic output = out.txt
   create mode = 0777

"printenv" in script shows:

PWD=/var/magic
HZ=100
USER=root
MAIL=/var/mail/aal
LANG=C
LOGNAME=aal
SHLVL=6
HUSHLOGIN=FALSE
_=/usr/bin/printenv
SHELL=/bin/bash
TERM=vt100
HOME=/root
PATH=/sbin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/bin/X11:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin

Respectively, attempts to access my own files as "~/myfile" fail. It tries to go to
"/root".

Can anyone give me an idea: how to set proper $HOME in magic script?
Obviously, "export HOME=/home/%LOGNAME" is not a valid solution.

[Samba] Connections to Samba server left open?

2003-11-03 Thread Ryan Novosielski
I've noticed that in the output of 'w' (I use wtmp/utmp support), numerous
Samba connections are left open that are more likely not still in use
(even late at night when there are no users around, there will be upwards
of 20 connections). Killing the processes makes these entries go away, so
it is apparent that it is not just utmp/wtmp not clearing entries
properly. Is there any reason why these connections would remain open, and
anything I can do about them?

Have you read the Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf?

http://us1.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf

There is a whole chapter on NT4Migration.

Having specified that your samba server should be a WINS server, you
should also set the IP address of your Samba server as the WINS server in
the TCP/IP settings on all your Windows clients.

These settings are not necessary, they are automatically handled by samba.

This should not be necessary if samba is a WINS server.

Samba is just a set of services that run over TCP/IP. You need to
configure your TCP/IP networking correctly. Samba can not correct bad
TCP/IP configuration.

If both network cards are installed in your Samba server, then each
network card must be configured for a different subnet. For example:

CardIP Address Network
--- -- ---
eth0192.168.0.1 192.168.0.0/24
eth1192.168.1.0 192.168.1.0/24

I do not understand what you are trying to communicate here.

[Samba] Cannot find monthly digests

2003-11-03 Thread a13
Hello rsync gurus,

Pardon my ignorance but I am trying to find out the
appriopriate URL in order to fetch old mailing lists.
Several months ago I could easily navigate to the requested web
page and fetch archived postings one month at a time.
Will somebody give me a hint ?

Regards,

Marek
