 You may need to patch/recomplile your kernel to enable Posix ACLs/EAs,

Where can I find that patch?

 then for ext2/3 fs you need the acl mount option.

Why for ext2/3 ?? You're using XFS right?

 And last but not least
 after installing all the userland aplications and development libraries
 you may need to recompile samba to have acl support, you could watch the
 configure mscript if it finds the acl libraries.

 Good Luck!

[Samba] problem getting windows 95/98 to logon

2003-11-24 Thread David Weilers
Hi,

I have installed Samba 3.0 the other day, and it works great on my XP
machines. However, Windows 95 and 98 machines display an error when
trying to authenticate at the samba domain.

In dutch the error says: Ongeldige parameter which translates (if i am
not mistaken) to Illegal parameter.

Does anyone know anything about this problem?

Thanks already!

2003-11-24 Thread Nick Gale
Thanks Bob

Unfortunately I have tried all manor of combinations of op locks, etc. and
nothing makes any difference. I don't think this is anything to do with
locking - when you change the read only bit in file properties on the
windows box there is nothing on the log, i.e. this happens totally on the
client and not on the server. This must be more to do with the way the
client is being advised of the status of the file after it is saved for the
first time.

I am not hopeful about this, as I can see similar posts about this in the
archive (relating to 2.2.8 as well) and no answers...

Thanks

 Hi

 I have just upgraded to Samba 3.0.0 and have found a problem with Office
 2000 running on Windows 2000. Files opened in Word or Excel open fine and
 can be saved once without a problem but the action of saving sets the
read
 only attribute of the file and so subsequent saves do not work. The only
way
 round this is to close the file, go to Explorer and select the properties
of
 the file and then un check the read only box. You can then open the file
 again, but again once you save it it becomes read only.

 This only happens on Office 2K on Win 2K, other file types on Win 2K are
 fine and office 2K files on Win 98 are fine.

 It appears to be the way Windows or Office is interpreting the
information
 about the file as the log shows the same results / actions (log level 2
3)
 as it does when opening and saving other files.

 Has anyone else found this - is this a bug?

 Your help would be gratefully received

 Thanks

Sorted it!

You need to set nt acl support = no

the default in 3.0.0 is yes.

Hope this might help someone else with the same problem.

Re: [Samba] samba and OSX issue

2003-11-24 Thread Tom Brown

 OS-X wants Samba 3.0. It fixes a lot of issues that OS-X has with SMB.
 Another issue you may be hitting is large file support. You might do
 some searches in the list to see if there are discussions related to
 that which you may be experiencing.

I have switched to 3.0.0 and the issues i was seeing seem to have gone away
somewhat - fingers crossed

 BTW- OS-X in general seems to have flakey network support. It is
 getting better, but it's been my #1 headache.

seems that way to me to - hopefully Panther is a step in the right direction

[Samba] Samba 3 Automount Home directory using Solaris/LDAP

2003-11-24 Thread Philip Jackson
Dear All,

I am trying to automount a home directory on a Samba server. The Samba
server is set to USER security and it does currently authenticate to an
LDAP server (iPlanet DS 5.1). However, once logged in I would like to
see an entry pointing to the users home directory which is done
automatically using data from the LDAP directory. There are nearly
20,000 users in the directory so setting up one share for each is not
practical.

Thanks,

[Samba] samba3 with ldap: connections from WinXP and smbclient 3 are OK, but not from WinNT and smbclient 2

2003-11-24 Thread Thomas Scheffczyk
Hello,

please excuse if this question was asked before, but I wasn't able to
find an answer for my problem in the list archive nor (with google) on a
website.

Here is my problem:

I use Samba 3 from Debian/unstable together with ldap. The ldap-server
is a NDS Server (Novell directory service/eDirectory). Authentication
works well

- with the smbclient of samba 3.x
- from Windows2000 with EnablePlainTextPassword enabled in the registry
- from WindowsXP with RequireSignOrSeal disabled
but it fails with the error message session setup failed:
NT_STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE for the same account

- with the smbclient of samba 2.x
- from WinNT with or without PlainPasswords enabled in the registry
I checked the ldap requests with ethereal: in all cases it's the same
request and the same response, except that requests from the first group
uses unicode encoded and the latter ansi encoded passwords. I'm not sure
if the login failure is caused by this difference. I would like to check
it, but I don't know how to change this settings. Does anybody else know?

But I guess that I didn't find the necessary settings to make samba 3
accepting logins from WinNT and the older smbclient at all. Could
anybody point to a documentation of this topic or give me hints how to
solve this problem?

TIA

Thomas

I need to set up some 'active directory' on Samba 3? Is it that possible?

Any info/links on this *really* appreciated! :-)

Re: [Samba] password chat program timeout

2003-11-24 Thread Adam Tauno Williams
 after some investigation, I found out why my users always get an error
 back when they try to change their passwords on win2k.
 unix password sync option is enabled and passwords are synchronised via
 passwd chat. All acounts are stored in ldap.
 With the value of 2000 ms in smbd/chgpasswd.c(function expect) I always
 got timeout messages in the logs. The reason for the timeout seems to be
 the relative long ldap-lookup. However with a value of 5000 ms it works,
 users can change their (unix-)passwords over samba.
 Is there a chance to have a default value of 5000 ms or even longer in
 the next release?
 I also wonder if somebody else observed this kind of timeout issue.

We have seen this too. It would be ideal if this were a configuration directive.

[Samba] Cannot list complete directory with (not really) large number of files from Win2K client after upgrade to 3.0.0x

2003-11-24 Thread Sebastian Henschel
hi folks

unfortunately, i can only give you 2nd-hand info, because i usually do not
have access to the machine/network i am reporting about:

the server just upgraded from debian woody to debian sarge and thus samba
3.0.0final-1 was installed. now the Win2K client does not show all files in
the home-directory of the accessing user which it did before with version
2.2.3.  the home-directory contains about 500+ files/directories. i assume
that it does not matter if the directory in question is the home-directory or
any other beneath it.

new directories can be created but they fail to be displayed on the
client, though the new one exists as can be seen in a shell on the
server.

we also realised that moving some dirs/files around, thus reducing the
total amount of items to be displayed, actually helps. the threshold could
be 512 or so.

there does not seem to be a parameter in smb.conf to adjust that number,
so it seems that it is either unlimited (or better
/proc/sys/fs/file-max) or defined somewhere in the sources to a
relatively low number. though i found some rather old manual at
http://www.os9samba.com/manual.html which talks about
max-files-per-directory.

well, this should describe the problem fair enough. i already reported a
bug #220596) in debian, but no one replied to it, yet.
the smb.conf is supplied and a log (level 3) of a session can be given
if needed.
please cc: me, i am not on the list.

cheers,
 sebastian

[Samba] nmbd: No subnets to listen to. Shutting down....

2003-11-24 Thread GHeil
Morning,

I'm running the HP version (CIFS) of 2.2.8a on a HPUX server. This morning
a user complained that they could not connect to their share. What I found
in the log.nmbd is:

   [2003/11/21 10:39:36, 0] nmbd/nmbd.c:(256)
 reload_interfaces: No subnets to listen to. Shutting down...

When I checked the log file, I found out that this has occured a few other
times in the past three months.

Any ideas on what this error actually means? And is there a way to prevent
the shutdown? Work around?

Thanks

[Samba] Re: Still trying to backup 66 GB from LINUX to W2K

2003-11-24 Thread Dragan Krnic
Both rexec.exe and rsh.exe from W2K have the problem.

However, the rsh.exe from Hummingbird's Exceed
package works just fine. I copied it into my cygWin's
/usr/bin directory and did

   cd /cygdrive/c/temp
   time rsh p92 cd /local;tar cbf 64 - SAS | dd of=here.tar

and the file is OK. It tars out all the files in SAS
directory. Unfortunately cygWin's ls -l shows the
file size modulo 2 GB, like this:

  -rw-rw-rw- 1 root mkpasswd 786464768 Nov 24 15:49 here.tar

But W2K's dir sees the size correctly as:

  24.11.2003  15:495.081.432.064 here.tar

Note that the file is quite a bit smaller than the one obtained
with W2K's rexec.exe and rsh.exe (21,043,160 bytes shorter),
because there is no LF-CR/LF translation with Hummingbird's
rsh.exe.

[Samba] Browse List Entry Limit

2003-11-24 Thread Mike Pavlovich
Hello,

I would like to know how to increase the number of servers samba holds in
browse.dat. The database seems to keep about 2,200 servers only. I have
more than 3000 servers and somel do not show up when I do smbclient -L
myhost.

Thanks,

Mike

Re: [Samba] Samba 3 Automount Home directory using Solaris/LDAP

2003-11-24 Thread Philip Jackson
Giovanni,

Thanks for the information. I think I have got it working. I also had to
enable NIS Homedir to Yes (Even though the protocol is LDAP). I am not
sure if this made a difference as I had changed a few other parameters
as well. So far so good though.

Thanks,
Philip.

are nearly 20,000 users in the directory so setting up one share for
each is not practical.

You can add this entry in your smb.conf
[share]
path = /home/%G%U
%U is the user
%G is the GRUOP
When the user is logging samba mount the correct share for each users.

[Samba] 9x clients printing in BW with CUPS

2003-11-24 Thread Alan Munday

I have a working printing system where clients use the Adobe drivers to
print to Samba(3.0)/CUPS(1.19).

The 9x clients do not always print the colour for some graphic object types
(where XP/2000 clients do).

Is this a restriction of this configuration?

[Samba] Samba / XP drive listing problems

2003-11-24 Thread Gary MacKay
Welp, I have asked this question numerous times with no responses, so
I'll try to rephrase it. I have a very upset client and need an answer soon.

How do I configure samba or XP to display the drive listings correctly
(shorter) in Windows Explorer? Other versions of Winbloze seem to
display the lists of mapped drives just fine. XP displays this:

Local Disk (C:)
sys on 'Samba Server 2.2.7-security-rollup-fix on Server (Server) f:'
Obviously the listing for the F: drive is way too long. How do I get it
to display shorter? I have already set the netbios name and server
string parameters in the smb.conf file and restarted the service. What
else can I do short of recompiling the entire package myself?

[Samba] problem destroying /dev/null

2003-11-24 Thread jonlists
Working with Samba 3.0 on rh9. Set up samba to use tdbsam (small network,
maybe 30-40 users tops) and be a PDC for the internal network. Will be
joining machines to this domain. My smb.conf file has been configured to
use tdbsam as the backend, and with an add machine script, add user
script, etc.

However, using the command:

pdbedit -a jdoe

results in could not create account to add new user jdoe

running the useradd script manually (as found in smb.conf) results in the
user being added.

running pdbedit -a -m jdoewks

results in tdb_update_sam: SAM_ACCOUNT (jdoewks$) with no RID!
unable to add machine! (does it already exist)

However, running the machine script adds the machine to the user list
(/etc/passwd), but obviously not the tdbsam.

If I then use the RH9 user and groups tool to delete the machine account,
it asks if I wish to delete the user's home directory, which is /dev/null.
Deleting this is bad, basically destroys the system, and leads to
recovery. Ouch.

Re: [Samba] LDAP, Active Directory, Redhat 9 Clients

2003-11-24 Thread Patrick
su uses /etc/pam.d/su, so if that does not have winbind support then it
will not accept the user. An easy way to configure pam on RedHat is to
use authconfig. It has an option for windows authentication. When it
is turned on it will add the winbind lines to /etc/pam.d/system-auth
which all pam files on RedHat point to. The down side to this is they
will be able to use anything that requires a password. So for example
it you have remote x-logins enabled they would be able to login to an
x-session.

Yes, You didn't give us enough info.

First off, what versions of the Linux Kernel are on the 2 machines?

Second, what version of Samba on each machine?

Any setting in Samba that are designed for DOS Machines for those
shares?

As much pertinent info as possible would be good.

[Samba] Authentication failed through SWAT

2003-11-24 Thread Eric Geater 11/18/03
I'm now pointing my Samba 3 (this is a different computer, running
Mandrake 9.1) to the correct TCP port of 901, but when I attempt to
enter my root password, it rejects the login attempt and says,
Authentication failed! Do you want to retry?

Two things; retrying has included other legit usernames and passwords,
but all have failed. Secondly, there is an account on my NT system
called root, and I changed the password on it to match the one, just
in case it's trying to authenticate against the NT server (since this is
Samba, and I have it on domain level security). Do any of these offer
any clues?

Thanks

[Samba] how to increase timeout?

2003-11-24 Thread John K.
If anyone has time to look at this problem I would appreciate it.

I think I am looking for a way to increase the timeout in samba (in the
smb.conf file)
for reporting a down link or can't read xyz file.

my problem
==
We have a wan in which links from a central linux machine to a nodes which
are xp machines
from 1 to 5 minutes a night. not very common, but it happens.

we are using samba to mount directories on the remote linux machines to the
local
linux server. (we use samba because we also have xp machines in our network
it is just easier to use this for now).

We use rsync nightly to backup remote directories to the local linux
server.
When one of the outages happes during a backup (rsync operation) either
- if I have not set the --timout value in rsync the operation just
continues. Rysnc seems
not to notice that samba is reporting errors and just copies over I assume a
bunch of .
Of course the file is corrupted.

- if I have set the --timeout value in rsync, in the case of failure rsync
just drops out. Of course if
i set the --timeout value to something like 2 minutes rsync seems to ignore
the samba errors and continues.

What I would like to do is set a timeout value in samba for reporting errors
from what seems
to be about 30 seconds to something like 6 minutes. Then I could set the
--timeout value in rsync to
something like 5 minutes.

I can't find in man smb.conf anywhere were you can set something like if
you can't connect in 30 seconds then report an error.

Perhaps I should be using an rysnc server or some other method.

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [Samba] Samba 3.0.0, LDAP and multiples domains

2003-11-24 Thread Adam Williams
 Can samba have multiples domains in a single OU on ldap ?

It seems like this should work to me. The domain SIDs would be
different.

 Cause I have 2 separate samba domains, many users in the same OU depending
 on one or the other domain (not 2 at the same time, the SID is refering to
 only one domain), and every user can log into the 2 domains without
 interdomain trust...
 Is it a normal feature ?

Seems very strange. I don't have one currently, but I ran a test-domain
from my same Dit while testing moving from ldapsam 2.2.x - 3.x.x and
am pretty sure it didn't exhibit this behaviour.

 (Yes it's a configuration a little twisted, I know ;))

I don't think so. Why shouldn't objects be able to exist in the same
ou?

You installed a source rpm, not a binary RPM. it sin
/usr/src/mandrake/SOURCES or something like that. you can make it into
a binary rpm to install, rpm -bb samba3-3.0.0-1.1mdk.src.rpm and it'll
compile and build the rpm and put in /usr/src/MANDRAKE/RPMS/i386 or
something like that.

This isn't unusual for source rpms. It just means it was bundled with
ownership of files as the developer, whose account obviously doesn't
exist in your context.

Source RPMs don't typically show up there. Build a binary RPM (or RPMs)
from the now installed SOURCE/SPEC combination and install those.

smbmount or mount -t smbfs do not support large files. I.e. 2Gb files.

I suggest that this is a bug in the linux kernel, and should be fixed there.

Next questions: Are these machines using older-filesystems like reiserfs

How about, are there any 2GB files on either of filesystems?

Are you using quotas on either filesystem, ACLs perhaps?

What version of Libc6 (glibc for you) are you using?

Why aren't you using NFSv3 for this? It is fast and more native to linux
than SMB. Easier to use than SMB, except for Windows which has native
SMB.

Please don't CC me, as I read the samba list, especially since

 Is there a chance to have a default value of 5000 ms or even longer in

I've parameterised this (in seconds) for the next release. Thanks for

New parameter will be passwd chat timeout (default 2 seconds).

[Samba] Login Server

2003-11-24 Thread Todd Johnson
Is it possible to set our Samba PDC to just act like a domain login
server? I dont want it to store profles. Its a great concept but we dont
want our users storing EMAIL on the server. Some of them have huge
amounts of email. The roaming profile works great atm but we do not want
to implement this. Is there a way to set samba to not try and set a
profile.pdf account up? We basically just want the user to log into the
domain and once logged in to run whatever login.cmd file we have setup
pushing out service packs and whatever other critical updates we want
them to run.

I juse want the user to login and hit a general logon dir that will
execute a login script.

Thanks

 A particular point to consider is the native support for MIT kerberos

 Fedora Core 1 has this, and I think the latest SUSE does, Debian Testing

[Samba] w2ksrv, and a samba based netlogon?

2003-11-24 Thread Allen Bolderoff
Is it possible to have a windows 2000 server in AD mode, with a samba server
as a domain member, and have the roaming profiles and netlogon stuff all
happen on the samba server?

So:

W2ksrv as ADC.

Samba box is joined to AD on the w2ksrv box.

We then add a user to the w2ksrv box, and set up the profile to load from
\\sambaserver\homes\profile\ and to run the logon script from
\\sambaserver\netlogon\username.bat

We have it pulling the profile ok, and the ntlogon.py script is creating the
username.bat batch file, however the XP system is just not executing the
script.

Any ideas why? How can I fix it to do this?

Would I be better off running the username.bat file from the w2ksrv box?

If so, what method do I have of creating a username.bat file automagically
as ntlogon.py does it?

TIA

[Samba] Samba as a backup authentication server for Windows 2000 Server

2003-11-24 Thread Jyri
Dear all,

I searched through the Net but couldn't find a definitive answer to my
question: is it possible to use Samba 3.x as a backup authentication
server for Windows 2000 Server?

What I'm looking for is a way to make sure that couple of workers placed
in a remote office could always log into their workstations, even when
VPN connection to the main office (where W2K server is located) is
broken. I know Windows workstations cache logon credentials, but that
does not solve my problem as the users also have to be able to use
network shares of each other's workstations.

What I need is a small local server which could act as a logon server
when VPN is down. Our Windows 2000 domain is running in the native mode,
so a classic PDC/BDC setup is not possible without rebuilding the whole
domain.

All comments and ideas are warmly welcome. =)

[Samba] Problems using smbldaptools

2003-11-24 Thread Jason Williams
Evening everyone.

Im currently having some problems using the smbldap tools to add groups,
users and such.
Im using Samba 3.0.1pre3 with OpenLDAP 2.1.22.

I have setup the required files: /etc/nsswitch.conf, /etc/ldap.conf and
/etc/samba3/smb.conf
I also configured smbldap_conf.pm as well to reflect my setup. (Quick side
note: I have two of these files: one in /etc/samba3 and the other in
/usr/share/samba3/scripts...does one have precedence over the other?)

I also added the inital LDAP tree settings. (Users, computers, etc.)

When I try to use the tools from the command line to add a group or a user,
I get the following errors:

$ smbldap-groupadd3 loanofficers
failed to add entry: modifications require authentication at
/usr/share/samba3/scripts//smbldap_tools.pm line 494, DATA line 283.

It complains about authentication. I also took a look at line 494:

$modify-code  die failed to add entry: , $modify-error ;

Here is what is above that:

# $gid = group_add($groupname, $group_gid, $force_using_existing_gid)
sub group_add
  {
my ($gname, $gid, $force) = @_;
my $nscd_status = system /etc/init.d/nscd status /dev/null 21;
if ($nscd_status == 0) {
  system /etc/init.d/nscd stop  /dev/null 21;
}
if (!defined($gid)) {
  while (defined(getgrgid($GID_START))) {
$GID_START++;
  }
  $gid = $GID_START;
} else {
  if (!defined($force)) {
if (defined(getgrgid($gid))) {
  return undef;
}
  }
}
if ($nscd_status == 0) {
  system /etc/init.d/nscd start  /dev/null 21;
}
my $ldap_master=connect_ldap_master();
my $modify = $ldap_master-add ( cn=$gname,$groupsdn,
 attrs
= [
   objectClass
= 'posixGroup',
   cn
= $gname,
   gidNumber
= $gid
  ]
   );

$modify-code  die failed to add entry: , $modify-error ;

Check out this error I get when I try and add a user:

$ smbldap-useradd3 -a testuser
Can't call method get_value on an undefined value at
/usr/bin/smbldap-useradd3 line 154, DATA line 283.

I've been trying to find some additional documentation to help me resolve
this, but havent found anything concrete to fix this.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I did wrong, or what I missed?

I appreciate it.

win2k boot sector. I won't hold this against it though, since I know how
fragile win2K can be.

What would you suggest if I need ACL and quota support along with
Samba 3? I tried using the Debian XFS boot iso, but it suggested that I
can do a net install from it, which appears to be wrong. (it wanted CDs,
and I haven't pulled them down yet).

Currently we're running production boxes on various versions of RH 6/7/8
and Samba 2.2.8, most of them using XFS for ACL and quota support. I've
had much better luck getting these things going with XFS than with EXT3,
and it has proven to be rock solid for ~ 2 years now.

So is Debian on XFS with ACL/quota support something anyone has going
yet?

using rsync

my problem

We use rsync nightly to backup remote directories to the local linux

When one of the outages happes during a backup (rsync operation) either
- if I have not set the --timout value in rsync the operation just
continues.  Rysnc seems
  not to notice that samba is reporting errors and just copies over I assume
a bunch of .
  Of course the file is corrupted.

I apologize if you already resolved this..I am a bit confused as to why you need
to connect via samba for rsync. I do something very similar and rsync handles it
all if I have the correct rsync mount points defined in the .conf file

- if I have set the --timeout value in rsync, in the case of failure rsync
just drops out. Of course if
  i set the --timeout value to something like 2 minutes rsync seems to
ignore the samba errors and continues.

Thanks for replying chris,

I don't need samba for rsync per se. We use samba for other reasons. It
would be just convinient. However what is an rync mount point? I should go
read about this. Do you run an rsync deamon?

[Samba] HP560C

2003-11-24 Thread Alex Orange
Hey,
 I'm using an HP560C printer on a Redhat 9 linux server and I can't get it to
print. Using smbclient I can print a text page. Using smbclient I can find the
printmode is graphical but when I try to print anything graphical it doesn't work. I
copied my old smb.conf file from Redhat 8 and it had worked. I have tried changing
printing = to cups but that didn't help. Yes my printer is set to share through cups
if that make any difference. The hp560c icon shows up on my windows machine and my
linux machine but if I try to print it just disappears.

I have solved the problem.
It turned out to be a autosensing hub/switch thinking a nic card was
half duplex, when the nic card was set to full duplex.
When I forced the nic card to half duplex, everything worked.

I still think there is a problem with samba or the linux kernel, because
with the nic card set wrongly on thw windows 2000 machine, thus causing
lots of lost packets, I was able to transfer files easily between
windows machines, all be it slowly. It was only the windows 2000 to
samba that failed. When I get a moment, I will look into the problem
further.

Re: [Samba] w2ksrv, and a samba based netlogon?

2003-11-24 Thread John H Terpstra
On Tue, 25 Nov 2003, Allen Bolderoff wrote:

Yes. In the user's account on the Win2KX AD Server you will have to set
the full UNC path of the logon script and the user's desktop profile.

 Would I be better off running the username.bat file from the w2ksrv box?

Any way you like it!

 If so, what method do I have of creating a username.bat file automagically
 as ntlogon.py does it?

You can do this, but your first challenge is to get the XP Pro client to
access the logon script. You can run 'root preexec' script on access to
the netlogon share.

Re: [Samba] Samba as a backup authentication server for Windows 2000 Server

 Dear all,

 I searched through the Net but couldn't find a definitive answer to my
 question: is it possible to use Samba 3.x as a backup authentication
 server for Windows 2000 Server?

No! Authentication server == Domain Controller. Samba can not be a domain
controller (backup or primary) to a Windows DC (Backup or primary).

Our Windows 2000 domain is running in the native mode,
 so a classic PDC/BDC setup is not possible without rebuilding the whole
 domain.

You can configure your samba server to provide the netlogon service (ie:
be a DC) but your Win2K systems will not like it. You should either
install a local Win2K DC or switch the central Win2K DC to a Samba server.

WG: [Samba] User manager for Domains for samba 3.0 PDC

2003-11-24 Thread Stefan . Iven

Can I use User Manager for Domains (usrmgr.exe) in a samba 3.0 domain?
When I tried to add a user with usrmgr I Received error Access Denied
but the user was created in ldap and it was added as a memberUid in Domain
Users group.
Is User Manager for Domains compatible with samba 3.0 domain?

Noramly you can use usrmgr. You need to log into Samba as User with admin
(root) rights on samba server.
In your ldap database should also exist an entry for root.

When using swat, be carefull, because swat appends the ldap suffix ,with
each change you make within
swat, to the user,group,machine and imap suffix.
This can also result in illegal stub or causing logon problems.
This is a reported bug in swat.
