RE: [Samba] winbind and Solaris 9 with AD
Hi, I have attached a pam.conf file for Solaris 9. I had to re-create the file. It has been tested for telnet, rlogin and ftp using winbind for 3.0.1 as a W2003 Server member. /Patrik On Mon, 2004-01-19 at 15:45, Ganguly, Sapan wrote: > Patrik, > > Hello! ok, cn=users group has an ldap entry, as you can see below... # Entry 1: cn=users,ou=Group,dc=INTRANET dn: cn=users,ou=Group,dc=INTRANET cn: users userPassword: {crypt}x gidNumber: 539 objectClass: top objectClass: posixGroup objectClass: phpgwAccount phpgwAccountStatus: A phpgwAccountType: g phpgwAccountExpires: -1 I can type net groupmap ntgroup="Domain Power Users" unixgroup=bin and it will work, but it will not do it to unixgroup=users, but why? Re: [Samba] Client Software for Windows
If your windows boxes are similar (almost same software on them) use a roaming profile and they can logon to any boxes with their own username and password and their profile is stored on the Linux (samba) box. There is no need to put any profile on the windows box. The official statement is that in 'winbind use default domain' only applies to pam_winbind. You should always specifiy the fully qualified user name in smb.conf for things like 'valid users'. And the format of the winbind user or group should make use of the short form of the domain. > However, I see still in /var/log/samba/.log "Username > (null) is invalid on this system" appear, when I "net use" two mappings > to my samba machine (one to the "grp" and one to the "pub" share) via > the Wk3 login script. [Samba] Client Software for Windows
Hallo, is there a Client Software for Windows that offers a possibility to take a different Username to mount Samba shares at the Startup of Windows, like the Netware Client for WIndows. For Example: In our Manufacture all Clients have got one User, this is "Administrator". But to mount a share from our Linux Server it should be a different User. Therefor the Worker shall only write a other Username in the Login-Window at Startup although the Workstation shall take the local Profil from the Administrator. This is like the Netware Client for Windows if you know this. The Reason for this is that every Worker may work on any Workstation he want to and we do not want to create 20 Profils on every Windows Client. mfg Markus F. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Samba & Windows 2000
Dear Sirs, I am running Samba 2.28 on a Sun/Solaris 9 Server. I have configured Samba to act as a PDC. I manually added the machine names in the Samba-users password file. I can connect with Windows NT 4.0 workstations into the Samba domain, but when attempting to connect with Windows 2000, it keeps asking for user and password information to add the workstation into the domain. If I just map a drive with the Windows 2000 - everything works fine. How can I configure Samba to either respond to the 2000 add-to-domain request or have the 2000 workstation stop asking to add the pc to the domain and act like NT4.0. [Samba] problems with samba 2.2.7 installed on Tru64 with OS 5.1
Hi, I have installed samba (v.2.7) on a Tru64 server (OS 5.1) and the file transfer is about 6 time slower that on another server with OS 4.0 and using samba 2.2.1a. I have checked all network possible issues (the swith port are on both servers configured for 100M/Full duplex and showing no errors to suggest a network issue). I did run some fpt test and found no problem; the transfer is quite fast and similar with the ftp transfer range on the other servers. It seems the network performance issue are occurring only when utilising Samba. Does anyone know if there is any problem with samba 2.2.7 installed on Tru64 (5.1)? Shall I install another samba version? If this is the case can anyone, please, advise which version is best to install? Re: [Samba] A few issues with samba & cups
We have a linux/samba/netatalk print server as our organization's primary print server with roughly 120 printers currently installed and about 100 more to go. I followed the CUPS documentation to the letter, as you did, and had unending trouble with bad output from windows clients. I tried dozens of ppds from many different sources all with little success, and very unreliable printing across the board. After months of trouble and a Helpdesk that was about to lynch me, I arrived at a solution: raw queues. In this scenario, do not rely on cupsaddsmb to take your ppd and package it up for the windows clients. Instead set up raw queues with no ppd, and then set up Samba to run the Add Printer Wizard from a remote client. This is probably the best place to start: http://www.linuxprinting.org/kpfeifle/SambaPrintHOWTO/ Look at 11th draft. Once set up this way, you will set up raw CUPS queues and then add drivers from a remote Windows client through Samba (you can even plug scripts into the APW to take care of adding a CUPS printer). You can add drivers for other OSes as you normally would on a Windows print server, change settings, etc. Nothing will be greyed out to printer admins. We have had very little trouble from a print quality standpoint since making the switch. If I had taken the server in this direction 8 months ago, I would have avoided a lot of pain. In fact, even thinking about someone else going through that is painful:) Following this method will make your server function identically to a Windows print server. -- Jeff Hardy Systems Administrator SUNY Potsdam [EMAIL PROTECTED] On Mon, 2004-01-26 at 17:57, Daniel Kasak wrote: > Hi all. > > I have Samba-3.0.1 sharing 2 printers via the 'share all printers' > feature - the printers are an HP 4500 colour laser, and a Ricoh Aficio > AP3200 ( accepting jobs like a network HP does ). > > I followed the instructions on the CUPS website for sharing printers > with the CUPS windows driver, using their 'cupsaddsmb' script, which > basically takes your existing ppd file, and adds a couple of dlls ( the > cups driver bit ) and chucks them in the printer$ share for Windows > clients to download when they connect. > > This all appeared to work flawlessly. [Samba] Samba 3.0.2 and Windows 2003 ADS.
Hi. I have installed samba 3.0.2 in my redhat 7.3, and Kerberos 1.2.4 I can make my Linux act as ADS Domain Membership whit out any problem, When I made this command: /usr/local/samba/bin/net ads join "Computers" -U% I get this message that tell me that everything is ok. Using short domain name -- DOMAIN2003 Joined 'PROTON' to realm 'DOMAIN2003.COM' I also have another PC with windows 2000, which is joined too, to my Windows 2003 Server. From my Linux I can connect with out any problem to this machine using "smbclient" and with no password. But when I try to connect form Windows 2000 to my Linux using this command: "net use * \\server\share ", it asks me for a password, and in the samba log I see this: [2004/01/26 17:41:57, 1] smbd/sesssetup.c:reply_spnego_kerberos(173) Failed to verify incoming ticket! What is missing?? What am I doing wrong??? In the HOW-to say that to probe this kind of configuration I have to use the "net" command form Windows, and if it doesn't work I have to use "klist tickets", when I run that command I get this: [EMAIL PROTECTED] root]# klist tickets klist: No credentials cache found (ticket cache FILE:tickets) Wich ticket is missing?? [Samba] A few issues with samba & cups
Hi all. I have Samba-3.0.1 sharing 2 printers via the 'share all printers' feature - the printers are an HP 4500 colour laser, and a Ricoh Aficio AP3200 ( accepting jobs like a network HP does ). I followed the instructions on the CUPS website for sharing printers with the CUPS windows driver, using their 'cupsaddsmb' script, which basically takes your existing ppd file, and adds a couple of dlls ( the cups driver bit ) and chucks them in the printer$ share for Windows clients to download when they connect. This all appeared to work flawlessly. I can right-click in the shared printers in the network neighbourhood and click 'connect' and the printer driver is downloaded. The first issue ( which is probably more of a CUPS issue than a Samba issue ) is that the margins are wrong. The margins are perfect via Linux. Margin settings are taken from the foomatic-generated ppd file, and I've checked them against the manufacturer-issued ones. I've also checked the Windows clients, and they are in fact using the same ppd file that gets downloaded upon connecting. So something is going wrong somewhere, and the left-hand margin is too big on both printers, and the top margin is too big on the HP 4500. If anyone know the the problem is, I'd be oh-so-grateful to hear from you :) The next issue is that I can't update the printer config now that it's set up. If I log into a Windows machine as root, samba will let me upload new drivers ( manufactured-issed ones to replace the CUPS Windows drivers ) to the printer$ share via the 'advanced' tab of the printer config dialog, when I click on 'apply' to select the uploaded driver, I get an error: 'Printer settings could not be saved. Access is denied'. The drivers are being uploaded to the printer$ share, and I can select them for use in a single print 'session' and everything works OK, but I can't make them the default drivers! One strange thing is that while I'm continually pressing on the 'apply' button, there is no logging being generated in /var/log/samba. So this looks like a permissions problem on the Windows client??? At any rate, it is preventing me from sharing the printers via samba, so if anyone knows what this issue is caused by, I'd also be very grateful to hear from you. Thanks! Sorry about the Terminal Server Whitepaper "attachment fiasco". HP will host both the Samba and the HP CIFS Server versions at www.docs.hp.com on January 30th. I'll post the actual url here. [Samba] Samba tuning for Linux?
We encountered a stability issue last week on one of 2.2.8 servers running on RedHat 7.1 (2.4.19-13 kernel with SGI XFS patches). It appears we exceeded the max files and kernel setting, which resulted in having more than 300 zombie smbd processes that we could not kill without a reboot. Increasing the value of 'file-max' in /proc/sys/fs from the default of 8192 to 32768 seems to have cured the problem for now. But I'd like to know if there are some guidelines for tuning samba and linux for stability and performance. I've applied most of the tips for Samba I think, but am not certain about the linux config. How many of you are running Samba 2.2.8 on Linux with 300+ concurrent users? What kinds of changes have you made to improve stability? Thanks. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Shawn Wright, I.T. [Samba] intermittent problem printing - cups+samba+ldap
A problem has come up in our computer labs. We use one account for a given lab, except in the main lab where students have individual accounts. In either case, printing is only intermittently successful. We use a "net use lpt1 \\server\printer" command in a batch file run at login to connect the printer. The command completes successfully. The CUPS status page for the printer reports either "idle, accepting jobs" or "ready to print" When attempting to print, an error popup comes up: "There was an error found when printing the document "foo" to ltp1:. Do you want to cancel or retry?" Windows Print Manager does not show a document queued, though the tooltip for the print manager icon in system tray shows "one document queued" until cancellation. The network traffic shows a workstation sending what ethereal calls a "Open Print File Request" and getting an netbios-ssn > (source ephemeral port #) ACK from the server, then the server sends an "Open Print File Response, Error: STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND" or "STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED" The former is more common by a factor of 3. There does not seem to be a pattern as far as which goes first. Googling on 'STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND' brings up some (apparently) unrelated hits. Environment: currently patched Win2k/sp4 clients. The server has: cups-1.1.14-15.4 samba-2.2.8a openldap-2.0.27-2.7.3 Cups is configured to allow MaxJobs 500 Increasing MaxClients from 500 to 800 did not clear the problem. This was all working a few weeks ago. Restarting the samba, cups, and ldap doesn't clear the problem. Reindexed ldap directory, without fixing the problem. The server is not heavily burdened, and there is plenty of free disk space. The server manages 35 printers. Creating a second printer object (for the same printer ip address) does not work either. It may be that not all accounts are affected; most are, and all new ones appear to be. It's hard to pin down the general area of the fault because of the intermittent nature of successful print jobs. I think it's not account related because sometimes a given account can successfully print. Just now something cleared the logjam and everyone can print. But the problem will undoubtably recurr. _ Are you a Techie? Get Your Free Tech Email Address Now! [Samba] PDC/BDC Questions
Software: OS: Redhat 9 Samba Ver: Samba 3.0.0 (Plus excel writelock patch, waiting for 3.0.2!) OpenLDAP Ver: 2.0.27-8 Just a quick question about PDC / BDC interaction, my plan is to distribute Samba (with slave ldap backend) BDCs to remote facilities, as well as have one on each network segment in the hopes of avoiding unnecessary nmb broadcast traffic. My question is this: Will the PDC / BDC(s), acting as master browsers for their segments, exchange netbios information (i.e. netbios names, browsing info, etc.) via nmb? Or do they exchange this information via tcp? Or at all for that matter? Also as a complete sidenote, what I think would be a nifty feature: (This would only be useful to those running an ldap backend (possibly mysql?) When setting an account to disabled, have an option to set the loginShell attribute to something, such as /sbin/nologin (Should be configurable of course). Should be a fairly trivial thing.. just altering another attribute, if my C foo wasn't so weak I might attempt to add this feature myself. Just a possible suggestion :) As always, big kudos to the Samba Team, thanks for your time folks. -- Cy -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] winbind authentication infrequent failure
Hi, I am running a RH9.0 server, using samba 2.2.7a. I use winbind to authenticate pop3 clients (Courier IMAP through authpam, but I think that's irrelevant). Users are defined in a NT4 domain. Sometimes, I get a NT_STATUS_PIPE_NOT_AVAILABLE error from pam_winbind.so. This is not very frequent, but at about 1000 users (read: many authentication request) it becomes a problem. Could anyone help track this down? If any further info should be needed, I will be glad to give it. [Samba] 2.2.8a mount-dir vanishes if windows-permissions are one-person only
Hi all, I'm new to this list, so please apologize for any inconveniences =) I just tried out to mount a windows-share which has permissions in a domain with Active-Directory for only one specific user. all others are not permitted to read, write or do anything else. using the command mount -t smbfs -o username=john.doe //wowbagger/windows_share /mnt/shares gives me no error message, accessing the mount-dir cd /mnt/shares works ok, but now ls -la errors out with ls: shares: Permission denied also ls -la'ing /mnt does not show the shares directory anymore. Now when I change the Permissions for the windows-share back to world-accessable, everything works as normal. Is that a known bug? RE: [Samba] winbind and Solaris 9 with AD
I wonder if that is my problem too? How do you force it all to compile at 32 bit? -Original Message- From: Unix Service (ANTS) [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 25 January 2004 17:43 To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: RE: [Samba] winbind and Solaris 9 with AD Hi have resolved the problem as to why getent and samba authentication via winbind were not working. It's really stupid - we were building 64 bit and then copying the 64 bit winbind nss lib into /usr/lib - doh!. So getent ( 32 bit ) would try and load a 64 bit winbind nss lib which obviously could not work , and it was failing silently. Recompiling 32 bit version of library has done the trick and getent works ok and users do not need unix accounts to access samba areas. Will post full build procedure tomorrow and am now trying to get the logging on to the Solaris 9 host using AD account details. Isn't working yet - have redirected all auth.debug to a file and am getting the following: Jan 22 22:02:18 ants725 pam_winbind[21561]: [ID 614614 auth.notice] user 'test7' granted acces Jan 22 22:02:18 ants725 login[21561]: [ID 468494 auth.crit] login account failure: No account present for user i.e. the pam authentication is working but then login doen't appear to be able to find the user's account. Anyway - will have a play and post back if I get any further. thanks to everyone who replied to my post - sorry it was such an idiotic problem in the end. tim *** This communication (including any attachments) contains confidential information. [Samba] win 2k3 / XP Pro to Samba 3.0.1 open failed, result=-512
I'm having some confusing problems transferring approximately 16GB, in about 541,000 individual files. What is happening is that I am starting with a blank destination directory on a gentoo system running samba 3.0.1, and pulling from one of two windows systems. The problems come in that each time I use rsync (version 2.5.7) over samba to keep the data on the gentoo system's side in sync with the data on either windows system, I get a different number for the file count. Since i use rsync --delete --ignore-errors, files which rsync does not think are on the windows side, are deleted on the linux side, no matter what. Which files these are changes every time. For instance below, Techboy is a Windows XP Professional system with all service packs and critical updates. linux2 is a gentoo system running kernel 2.6.1-rc2 , though I have seen these problems with 2.4.22 , 2.4.23 , 2.6.0, and 2.6.1-rc1. linux2 runs samba 3.0.1. I mount the share hosted on Techboy somewhere on linux2, and then I use rsync to sync it up, the desination being linux2. After the initial rsync. I then do three passes. Each of these passes is the exact same rsync command, but notice each pass comes up with a different file count. The files transferred usually consist of many files which were deleted on the previous pass, which it now thinks do exist. Techboy -> linux2 over samba 3.0.1, using rsync Pass 1: Number of files: 540586 Number of files transferred: 1134 Total file size: 14943865918 bytes Pass 2: Number of files: 541065 Number of files transferred: 951 Total file size: 14958832400 bytes Pass 3: Number of files: 540892 Number of files transferred: 505 Total file size: 14953961276 bytes And below, trying to single out either rsync or samba as the possible problem, I use cp -R , using an empty destination. It was then that I noticed the errors below. This is only a small segment of the errors, there were many more. Techboy -> linux2 over samba, using cp –R Pass 1: smb_open: Animals/Animals 06.jpg open failed, result=-512 smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=5091] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=4797] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=14811] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=9571] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8d80, mid=1125] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=10389] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8e80, mid=51222] timed out! smb_add_request: request [d3ce8d80, mid=25088] timed out! The second windows machine is a 2000 system. I see the same problems trying the same actions, using either rsync or cp . The exact rsync command that I am using is this: rsync -a -v --delete --ignore-errors --stats --progress /mnt/samba/clipart/ /mnt/rsync-backups/clipart/ Any ideas? Just need some input here.. got a PDC + BDC running on 302rc1 (everything fine here...) now i'm busy to make an application server running in the same domain.. so i did "SECURITY = DOMAIN" .. (ok here to) i rdist the linux users&groups over the network.. and have mysql as backend.. when i ask for the acl's on a file or directory, i get "\\server\username" & "\\server\groupmap" but why don't i get "\\domain\username" & \\domain\groupmap" ?? the domain-member application server doesn't use the domain name to map to only server name when i switch it to BDC it's fine again ?? gues i'm doing something wrong here.. who's got a clue ..!??! [Samba] Setting printer properties with prnadmin.dll (W2k Resource Kit)
Hi, we are trying to set printer properties with the prnadmin.dll from the windows 2000 resource kit. The printers are shared by a samba 2.2.8a, spoolingsystem is Cups. We are using the windows drivers to process the job, the queues are set as raw-queues on cups. For some models[1] setting the properties via a dumped file works without any Problems. For some other printermodels[2] it doesn't work, the properties are not saved on the samba-server. If we set the propertiess once by hand the script works and samba is storing the properties from the dumped file correctly. Any ideas where to look at to get it work with every model? 1: Lexmark Optra S1855 and T614 2: HP Laserjet 4100 and HP Laserjet 4050 regards, -- Stefan Klein, Systems Engineer MATERNA GmbH Information & Communications Theodor-Heuss-Str. 59, 61118 Bad Vilbel, Germany phone: +49 6101 806 0 | fax: +49 6101 806 590 mobile: +49 160 12 108 338 | [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Domain + Workgroup with same name: problem?
Hello everybody! I finally managed to set up a Samba 3.0.1 PDC that ran perfectly in the test-environment. Problems arose, when I installed it in a real bureau network. On a prepared w2k client that was already a domain member one could log on to the domain with the administrator's account, but trying to add other w2k clients failed with error msgs like: "Domain controller not found." That was strange, because the PDC was obviously there and the Administrator was already logged in and in the test environment adding a machine worked without any problems. After several hours search I found out, that there existed some (hidden in a back room.. :-\) XP Home clients that were members of a workgroup with the same name as the domain. They were already running when I introduced the Samba PDC into the network. When I switched them off and restarted Samba the PDC could be found sometimes but sometimes not. After messing around with what I took to be cached data on the Samba Server refering to WINS aso. I took the radical way and reinstalled Samba with the same configs but with a different domain name. That solved the problem for once. But it leaves a general problem: It looks as if you can render a PDC unusable if you introduce a machine into its network, that is in a workgoup of the same name as the domain. So my question is: How do I configure the Samba PDC that clients within the same network know who is the master of the universe and who is just an impostor? Especially the PDC itself should not get confused about this! The relevant entries (I think) in my smb.conf are: domain master = Yes domain logons = Yes preferred master = Yes wins support = Yes os leve = 64 greetings Alexander -- --- agoeres _at_ lieblinx.net tel.: +49 (0)30 / 61 20 26 87 fax: +49 (0)30 / 61 20 26 89 --- lieblinxNET we do software a Marwood & Thiele GbR --- reichenberger straße 125 10999 Berlin http://lieblinx.net --- -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Re: Remote Citrix Auth Pass-Through ...
Greetings ... Thanks again for your responce ... it currently feels like I am banding my head against a M$ Wall ... Now if we use winbind, we can't setup the Linux servers as PDC. This is incorrect. Winbind runs perfectly fine against Samba 3.0. No, what I mean, if you enable "domain logons = yes", getent passwd does not return any users from the AD system, which means I can't have a remote Samba Server acting as PDC to host the netlogon service ... That is a limitation of winbind, and with out the Samba servers running as PDC's I can't get the local workstations as the remote sites to process login scripts. Logon scripts for their own domain, or logon scripts for trusted domains? For the domain that is locale to the user ... Which would be a Samba server at a remote site ... I could give up on the idea of remote sites local workstations automaticly processing login scripts, because that is the only real thing I am looking for. I could manually add login scripts to all the workstations, or I could work out something with trusts. I have been trying setuping up a trust both ways between AD and Samba, but TS will not let any of my users login from Samba. How about you sort out your terminal-services issues first. I think you might be being bitten by generic Samba/TS interactions, and are just making your life more difficult by looking for the most complex solution. I am not sure that is the problem, for a test, I have been able to Join a Win2K3 TS system to my lovely Samba domain and everything works fine. No problem there. In a Samba domain, win2k TS clients need Samba 3.0.1 to store the right extra information. But it sounds like you don't want to run a Samba PDC, except for the fact that it would allow you to serve up a logon script. Can't AD do that as well, if not better? My real problem is a few $h!ty application which I have no control over. iScala, a finance system which uses M$SQL2K, tied very closley into AD. And then Citrix or maybe TS ... I am currently tring to create a trust between Samba and AD domain so that users in my Samba domain have access to AD resources, which currently means access to iScala. But I am still going to have to fine a way to get my remote Samba users to access Citrix via Pass-Through-Auth, but from what have seen, I might not have may options left. [Samba] Strange problems with profiles
Hi I use 2 samba servers (3.0.2rc1). One as PDC the other as BDC. Both are using ldap (sambaSamAccount) as backend. If I set profile path only in smb.conf every user gets an error message when loading a profile: Wrong path syntax. The clients did a connection to the server. If I set sambaProfilePath Attribute to the same value as profile path in smb.conf for a user this user is able to log in and load the profile most times. Most times it work bit not everytime. Path and settings for the profile share are still the same. I have this problem since 3.0.0 with different servers at different locations. Maybe I'm using wrong permission. [Samba] re-post [ machine group and pwdump.exe
Anyone dare to explain? For #2 I'm not using rpc vampire because it can't migrate hash password. Hi, 1. I want to migrate NT to Samba 3 domain without needing to rejoin all machine (using same domain name and SID). just curious, machine account should belong to what group sid? does it matter if belong to any value? 2. I just examine output of pwdump, some of member domain or even NT BDC is has "*" in password field which means this account was disabled. I've verified that machine is still valid member domain/bdc. it can browse network and do some administrative task. Any explanation? --beast -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
