Re: [Samba] AD<->Linux: Thoughts

The Linux version this time is open for discussion (SuSE have been mentioned - have no opinion there). I can't comment on your Samba problem, but as for a choice for a server, Gentoo makes a very nice server. You only install packages as you need them ( security bonus ). It's also very easy to keep the box up-to-date, so your customer will be able to get what he wants in terms of continual upgrades without too much effort on your part. Gentoo's upgrade system is pretty cool. I assume you've heard about it's 'portage' system and 'emerge' script, so I'll tell you about the lesser-known 'etc-update' script... It merges in any simple changes to config files that come with the version upgrade you've just done, and notifies you of config files with large changes that it can't deal with so you can decide what to do with them. I've done everything from glibc updates to compiler updates to xfree86 updates to apache updates with no problems as all. Anyway, it's worth a thought if you will have to keep the box up-to-date. -- Daniel Kasak IT Developer NUS Consulting Group Level 5, 77 Pacific Highway North Sydney, NSW, Australia 2060 T: (+61) 2 9922-7676 / F: (+61) 2 9922 7989 email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] website: http://www.nusconsulting.com.au -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] cannot change user password with CTRL-ALT-DEL
it appears that MS04-012 (828741) is the problem... (at least on XP Pro) I first removed MS04-011 (835732) and no luck, but then removed MS04-012 and get a successful password change message. -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Domain server member cannot locate logon server.
I have a RH90 linux computer running Samba 3.0.3 that functions as a PDC. Netbios name = MAIL Everything runs fine. I have another RH90 linux computer running Samba 3.0.3 as a Domain Server member. Netbios name = WEB I can browse to WEB, but cannot browse into WEB. Each time I try to connect I get a message that indicates a logon server is not available. If I execute 'smbclient -L web ' in a terminal window on web, I am asked for a password. I enter the 'root' password and get the message "session setup failed: NT_STATUS_NO_LOGON_SERVERS". I have searched high and low for an explanation. Can anyone shed any light on my problem? Thank you. [Samba] idmap backend with Active Directory LDAP
Everything that I have read about 'idmap backend' describes it being used with a standalone LDAP server. Is it possible though to configure Samba to store idmaps directly in an Active Directory LDAP using 'idmap backend'? This would obviously involve some schema changes to Active Directory, but other than that I can't think of any technical reasons why this would not be possible. I could be wrong is saying this though. Thanks, Ed -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

[Samba] Knows linux but NO MS, needs help setting up PDC for school
Hi folks I have worked with Linux for 8 year and have not touched MSwindows. I hneed help setting up XP-pro and Samba on Linux. My local school has asked me to setup a computer network using MSwindows XP as clients and Linux as the server. I have no experiance with MSwindows (it's evil). The MSwindows computers has Mozilla, gaim and openoffice installed. I have bought both " The official Samba-3" and "Samba-3 by example" but there is no XP configuration. I want to setup the network with Linux/Samba as the PDC (control logins) and then "user" based auth. But not knowing MSwindows I don't know what some to the terms mean. I have simple "share" mode working and printing. But I get lost after that. Please help me off list. RE: [Samba] Windows 2003 Active Directory and Group Access
Hi together, I have still the problems I have mentioned below. Is there any developer who can help me? If it is not possible to find a workaround, I have to enter every user explicitly in the "valid users" option, and there are about 100 users who are trying to access the share. It would be great if a developer can tell me more - perhaps I can make a hack by myself - but it's very difficult to understand all source files and how they work together. As you have written before everything works without "winbind use default domain = yes" but then a user has to login e.g. for ssh with AMATEC+username. I don't think it's a good idea to hack the pam module too, perhaps is there another possibility - perhaps any of the developer team has a workaround? Mai 2004 12:22 An: 'Franz Gsell' Betreff: RE: [Samba] Windows 2003 Active Directory and Group Access Hello Franz, You can try to set "winbind use default domain = yes" again and use as valid users: "valid users = @AMATEC.LOCAL+GG_Entwicklung" I've found in a faq the following: Q: I tried to set valid users = @Engineers, but it does not work. My Samba server is an Active Directory Domain Member server. Has this been fixed now? A: The use of this parameter has always required the full specification of the Domain account, for example, valid users = @"MEGANET2\Domain Admins". You can always try if this work, while hacking pam_winbind.so seems not to be a good idea to me. We log on to the linux machine for email and ssh and so on. So the new problem is that a user is now AMATEC+testuser instead simple testuser (for the pam module). But I think we can make a hack to the pam_winbind.so file to add "AMATEC+" to the entered username (so a user has not to enter AMATEC+testuser but only testuser). Or is there a better way?
