[Samba] Samba 3.0.2a and MS Access 2002
I think I've seen a few others with similiar issues, but so far no answers that have applied to me. Basically, I have a solaris 8 box with Samba 3.0.2a that serves up all my windows printers. All printers for windows are configured in cups 1.1.20 as raw queues and I have point and print setup to push drivers to all the users. I'm not having issues with any other office apps, but Access 2002 is having trouble. When users open a database and try to print, Access 2002 fails to detect the default printer. They have to select a printer from the file menu and then this printer becomes the default printer for all users (which is a problem as users are on different floors and have to constantly change the printer). I know this seems like a small issue, but it's one of the last unexpected hurdles we have and we'd like to make our users happy. How can we make access 2002 detect a users default printer like ALL the other apps do. -Tim How many people here have telekenetic powers? Raise my hand. -Emo Philips - Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Re: [Samba] Log in one server, have shares in another ?
Once you go to samba 3 there is a parameter that allows you to specify the home dir location. Use the pdbedit command to change the homedir parameter. To use the same password data as the logon server, you can join your second workstation to the domain and use security=domain. Make sure that your unix IDs are synced as well, either manually or by using a network directory like LDAP or NIS. [Samba] Is this possible? (syncing users between a system with samba 3 on and a win2k3 server)
Okay, first a bit of background... It looks as though I'm going to be getting a consulting job soon to replace a guy at a company, turns out he has done something of a poor job (for example the router login is accessible from the outside, any ip etc). Now, the main server at this company is running Windows 2003 Server (SBS possibly) it also acts as the email server etc I plan to separate things a bit at the company and dedicate such tasks to separate servers, one for email, one for webserver etc. (they had a hard disk failure recently, the current guy didn't do the tape backups correctly and so they lost email, webserver and pdc). At the moment I plan to setup a linux system (either debian or gentoo.. Love those compile times) for the email server (postfix or qmail.. Probably postfix I have more experience with that) and have the users use imap to access their email internally and setup squirrelmail so they can access their work email at home. (some users often do work at home) Here is what I want to do: Whenever a new user (or any other currently existing users) are created on the win 2k3 server they are replicated on the email server (same username password) automatically. Is it possible to do this with Samba? It's mostly because they'll be a good number of currently existing users on the win 2k3 server and so when I setup the email server I don't want to be creating a very large number of users, I'd much rather it was totally automated. Sorry about this being a bit long, I tried to shorten it. Thanks Mark -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Now, the main server at this company is running Windows 2003 Server (SBS possibly) it also acts as the email server etc If this is SBS, you may want to rethink your strategy. SBS is designed to be AD controller and exchange for a company. I don't believe it will either join an existing domain or allow any other DCs in a AD tree either, so beware. At the moment I plan to setup a linux system (either debian or gentoo.. Love those compile times) A word about being a hired gun (that is, a consultant), if you're not going to be hand holding these systems, maybe you should do the company a favor and not use a custom built distro... Gentoo is fine if it's your personal box, but in a situation where somebody else may have to install a program, etc, try to go more mainstream. If there's somebody with any knowlege at the place and they want to update the systems, it's a lot better if you can hand them a book on insert favorite off the shelf distro and say go to town rather than say 'read the entire gentoo installation howto and jump right in. You may even get asked to come back for the serious upgrade/maintenance rather than getting cursed off the property (or sued for shoddy work) if they have to ask you to come back for every little thing. Try to leave the place in better shape, and more maintainable than you came in or you're doing all of us consultants a disservice. But I digress... Here is what I want to do: Whenever a new user (or any other currently existing users) are created on the win 2k3 server they are replicated on the email server (same username password) automatically. Is it possible to do this with Samba? Maybe what you really want to do is have your samba server be the DC and the w2k3 server simply be a member of its domain. Then you have your unix uids for email and logins. You'll have to run winbind if you're leaving windows as the DC, and that 'can' be a PITA in some cases. You can use various methods to transfer login information to the samba passdb, but there will be some manual labor involved. It's mostly because they'll be a good number of currently existing users on the win 2k3 server and so when I setup the email server I don't want to be creating a very large number of users, I'd much rather it was totally automated. RE: [Samba] Is this possible? (syncing users between a system withsamba 3 on and a win2k3 server)
Well, the gentoo mention was a joke. (the loving compile times remark) Are there any good books on the subject dealing with what I mentioned, as I haven't used Samba for a few years. (probably pre 2.0) Anyway, if I do setup any *bsd or linux servers they will be dedicated to the task and will not have any additional programs installed. I would most likely leave the win2k3 server as the PDC, I have heard of some issues in the past dealing with Samba and it being a PDC. The situation is that I want to apply the practice of least change, I don't want to (or feel the network needs to) have a new domain controller.. Having all machines join the new domain etc. So, SBS won't allow a BDC? (suppose I'll have to go and buy it then do some tests in vmware) What're saying is that it isn't possible currently with Samba 3 to replicate users from win 2k3? (without some manual work, is it possible at all to script any of it?) Re: [Samba] Re: Huge delays on login/first access from WinXP clients on samba 3.0.4 PDC
You may want to check your webclient service status. A lot of people suggest going and disabling the service on the clients, but if you've got a big shop then that's a huge PITA. I suggest popping up a simple, no-frills webserver on your PDC. What that solves is that when a machine comes asking for something on port 80 from the fileserver, your server responds 'I don't have it' and the client goes merrily along with what it 'should' be doing. This way you don't have to reconfigure every new install and things still go fast. Randy S wrote: I have a winxp slowdown problem which seems to go away when I turn iptables off. The samba packages are from the ftp.suse.com/project/samba. I've tried to rejoin this XPpro client under a new name, with no effect. After dismount these delays, it works as expected :-(. From reading the migration section in the HOWTO-Collection, I added a add machine script with the same value as add user script to smb.conf. Any hints are highly appreciated. This layer is used for DCERPC security, as well as ntlm_auth at this time. It expect things like SASL and the CIFS layer to use it as well. The particular purpose of this layer is to introduce SPENGO, which needs generic access to the actual implementation mechanisms. Schannel, due to it's 'interesting' setup properties is in GENSEC, but is only in the RPC code.
