[Samba] unable to write to a share
Hi. I moved my samba installation to another server yesterday because the old one had a hardware issue. Since then, users can read their home directories, but get a message like 'parts of this file are already accessed by another program' when they try to save something on the share. (The actual error message is in dutch, so this is a rough translation. It's error code 33, but i cannot find an English equivalent either.) The smb.conf file is the same as the one on the old server. This is the definition of [homes]: [homes] comment = %U's Home Directory valid users = %S read only = No create mask = 0664 directory mask = 0775 I'm quite sure the users' rights on their homedir are ok, because if I su to a user I can write something in his home directory from a Linux console. It is even possible to write to the share if I make a samba connection from a Linux machine with nautilus. Only when using windows, i get the error message, and nothing is saved. I can make an empty text document though. It gets saved on the server. But when I open it and try to save it with even only one character in it, it won't work. I hope someone has any idea of what is happening here. Thanks for reading anyway. yvan vander sanden -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: https://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] Problems with Samba
Hi, I administrate a server (debian etch) on which runs samba, version 3.0.24-6et. Everything worked fine until today. I tried to logon on the server via a clientmachine (win2k, winxp), but i got an error, System cannot logon because domain not reachable. (it is possible to ping the server and to establish a shortcut (to logon) to the server - that works). I have no idea what happens. The logfiles of smbd, nmbd are ok to mind, there is no advise for an error (..startet...becomes_domain_controller etc.). I already tested my sambaconfiguration via testparm, no problems. A simple restart of sambe didn't help too. testparm also shows the right name for the workgroup etc. Does anyone have an idea, where the problem could be? The last changes i did on the server where updates via aptitude. thanks Edgar ___ Jetzt neu! [Samba] Roaming profile works for all users except one
I've inherited a small office network I didn't build. We're running Novell's eDirectory, and using Samba as a PDC. Everyone's profile roams but mine. I didn't build our smb.conf file, but I've read tutorials on roaming profiles, and it seems to be set up correctly. I've included the text of that file at the end of this message. I bungled creating my account in eDirectory, deleted it, and recreated it with the same name. In particular, I didn't have the profile directory set up properly the first time I tried to login. I don't know if that could have caused problems. My account seems to be set up like the older ones now. Also, logon.bat doesn't seem to run for me. I end up with the X: drive mapped, but logon.bat sets up other shares for every other user that I don't get. I see a command prompt window flash by on the screen when I start, but it doesn't work. I tried to put a pause in logon.bat, to stop the command prompt, but it flashed by just the same. I'm really puzzled by this. Everything I've read suggests that the action happens in smb.conf, which doesn't differentiate between users -- so I don't understand how I could manage to break it for one account. Anyway, here is my smb.conf -- we had a lot of comments from the example file, which I've removed for brevity. [Samba] log output and browse list problem
Samba List: I have a multisite setup connected via T1/VPN. Each site has it's own SMB server (Debian 4.1) and between 6 and 70 PCs connected to it at a time. Each is a PDC for it's respective site, on different domain names. Any given site may have to access files stored on a different site's server, so SMB traffic is allowed between locations. We've had a problem for a while now where the browse list on PCs never expires old entries. For instance, one of the IT employees had a testing workgroup set up that still appears in the browse list 8 months after he's left. We've tried the turn everything off suggestion but it's 1) hard to know if we really got *everything* off; we're a bit of a 24/7 operation and 2) a minor problem, so we haven't dedicated that much time to figuring it out. One of the servers sporadically has a weird log entry, though, and I think it might be related. Once or twice a week, the log output looks like: nmbd/nmbd_synclists.c:complete_sync(284) sync with DELETEME(0.0.0.0) for workgroup TEMP completed (0 records) : 15 Time(s) nmbd/nmbd_synclists.c:complete_sync(284) sync with HARRIS(0.0.0.0) for workgroup SERVERS completed (3 records) : 18 Time(s) nmbd/nmbd_synclists.c:complete_sync(284) sync with HARRIS(0.0.0.0) for workgroup SERVERS completed (4 records) : 3 Time(s) nmbd/nmbd_synclists.c:complete_sync(284) sync with JAZZ(0.0.0.0) for workgroup HARMONY completed (0 records) : 26 Time(s) nmbd/nmbd_synclists.c:complete_sync(284) sync with JAZZ(0.0.0.0) for workgroup HARMONY completed (0 records)‹ QjœG íÝksÛÈv.àÏɯÀGNUÆÆ•ÔÉ©‚$‰/*’ÇNrYczoW,Q-ïøߧ$¨I€M¨›½¼‰KÚëQãÒ÷ÕÿåÚv÷í¼uÛ–Ýö«û–ûÿŸ_nß²ÿ{úùíû›¿CöÕ§ïó´:]ï·øl=Ýß¾›}ù#äß}š?Ìî?Íþ'´ÞþúüøöñéþíâóÝíç·O÷³ÿy˜ýýsöå û˜Õj¶ÛùÀõ}¿ó‡õma}þþ8ûüå·ÅÿëÛ½õóŸìçÏ‹ÿ/è 3넶tÐAtÐAtÐAò_.tÐA NOTE: This email sent in plain text (I hope!) so it might not look correct, but it's supposed to look like Unicode-to-ASCII non-sense. Re: [Samba] Get logged on username (several sessions on the same machine)
I'm aware that the fact connections aren't while the should is a client issue (let's say due to a finger press on the reset switch). I also know that it can possible that multiple users have a session open from the same machine (let's say a Linux box where Alice and Bob are connected with SSH and where they smbmount some ressources on a Samba Server). I now understand that there is no really a way to do what I want only with Samba, and that this is due to pure logic and SMB/CIFS specifications (if I'm wrong, please correct me). root preexec option in [netlogon] resource definition helps me now to get the real name of the connected user (since in my case only one person can use a workstation). Note that I see more than one execution of root preexec in one logon, as if client opens/closes/opens/closes/opens netlogon share from 2 to 4 times in its logon procedure... Thanks for your answer, cheers. K. Douglas VanLeuven wrote : Kurthermal wrote: But the machine has been rebooted and another user has opened a session on it, but 'net status session' or 'net session' continue to claim that there are 2 users logged on the same machine. It isn't always the case, I think it can be due for example to a reset of the machine so windows didn't close cleanly the network resources. I'm sorry I wasn't clear enough. I wasn't attempting to explain your circumstance. I was trying to state a general design principal using a kind of Socratic method. Windows workstations are notorious for not bothering to signal goodbye. There are MS KB articles about fine tuning Windows servers to avoid exhausting resources because the workstations are like that. It's not a samba issue, it's a windows issue. I only tried to explain why it is the way it is because you used the bug word. There has been a samba option for forever (since at least 1.x or beta) deadtime = minutes just so the sessions don't hang around forever. I never tried setting it to 1 min., but you could experiment. But it doesn't work if an application forgets to close a file or release a lock.. I never tried it, but it should be possible to script something with the root preexec if this is really an issue for you. But be warned - there are legitimate reasons multiple users can be logged on to a samba machine at the same time. For example. My wife is logged on a widows machine. I connect with remote desktop. Re: [Samba] msdfs root -- client error refers to a location that isunavailable
I still haven't been able to figure this out; and haven't seen any responses to my inquiry. One of my colleagues wanted to host the Dfs root on an actual Windows server, which seems to work fine. I was hoping to keep an all Samba solution, but I guess I will have to let him have his way. Also, the Windows server is identified as Windows Server, whereas the samba server is identified as Windows NT 4.9 Server; I'm not sure if that makes a difference... That is the same for me.
