Not only will it save you time, it will save him a lot on money. $199
for VMware and $200-300 (or less if you already have 1GB) for 2GB of
memory for your computer is significantly less than buying 3 or 4
machines for you to use for testing. With 2GB of memory and a
reasonably fast processor you can run 4 Virtual Machines simultaneously
and still use the Host.

If you have a laptop and can get him to spring for the memory for it you
can take it home to work on projects.

If you are like me, there never is any time to do testing while I'm at
the office anyway, so, I get most of my testing and evaluation done at
home.

VMWare includes it own DHCP server. Also there are three different ways
of setting up Networking with VMWare so you have a lot of options.

You should look into getting a copy of VMWare Workstation. You can
setup a complete network of VM machines to do your testing and not touch
the production network at all.

I have VM Workstation for Linux running on my Laptop and routinely run 4
to 5 VM's all at once.

I just bought a Dell PowerEdge 700 server with 4GB of RAM to run VMWare
and it is going to replace the 4 computers currently residing in my
office.

Check it out.

I am using Backup Exec 8.6 to backup a Redhat server for three years. I
use the Unix agent instead of trying to backup via Samba. The server was
initially setup with Rh7 and was upgraded to 7.2 then 8.0 The Unix BE
agent has worked flawlessly the entire time.

How does not using encrypted passwords support your assertion that Samba
is not using eDirectory for authentication?

The facts are:

1. Until I recompiled Samba to include the -with-ldapsam option I was
not able to connect to the Samba shares.
2. There are no local user accounts contained in either the Linux passwd
file or the Samba smbusers file.
3. Windows clients are using their Novell user id's and passwords when
authenticating to the Samba shares.
4. With the appropriate pam_mkhomedir.so commands in /etc/pam.d/samba,
the users home directory is automatically created the first time the
user connects to the Samba server, and the user has full rights the
directory.
5. I can provide DSTRACE LDAP log files that clearly show the
authentication process.

There obviously is an issue with using encrypted passwords with Samba
and eDirectory. But, given the above facts, I can not honestly see how
you can say that Samba is not using eDirectory for authentication.

If I am wrong, please enlighten me.

>

Looking at this bug, the resolution is listed as "WONTFIX". Does this
mean there are no plans to work with Novell on Samba/eDirectory support?

BTW I am using eDirectory 8.71 running on a NetWare 6.0 SP3 server.

Finally,

In case this post does not come across in the spirit that it is
intended, please be aware that it is not meant to be combative in
anyway. My ONLY goal is to use Samba in an eDirectory environment and
contribute back to the Samba community my experiences in doing so.

So far I have successfully setup two Samba servers and I am in the
process of documenting the procedure. I will post the completed
document on my website when I am satisfied that anyone can follow it.

Sorry, I haven't had the time to actually implement it yet. I've setup
a test lab that consists of a NW6 server with eDir 8.7, two RedHat 8.0
Linux system, and one W2K workstation. I am going to be off the rest
of the week so it will be Monday before I get a chance to see if I can
get it going. I'll keep you posted. I'd also like to hear about your
results in getting it working in your environment.

Could you try adding a local user account with the same name as the
domain name. Can you even do that? We don't have a domain, so I'm not
up on all the whys and where-fors of Domain Accounts.

Anyway if you can add a local user account with the same name as the
domain account and make the local user a member of the local
administrator group and then if the correct print job name shows up
instead of the "Remote Downlevel Document" then I tend to think we've
found a bug or feature depending on your perspective... Grin!

[Samba] Max Print Jobs Problem

2003-07-07 Thread Chuck Stuettgen
I have setup a dedicated print server running on RH 8 with Samba
2.2.5-10 and LPRng-3.8.9-6 to service a HP9000 printer. The print queue
for this HP9000 gets it print jobs from a Windows server via a script
and the queue is set to HOLDALL status. The HOLDALL status is necessary
because the script runs overnight to produce the print jobs which can
total anywhere from 500 to 12,000 individual print jobs.

My problem is that samba defaults to accepting up to 1000 print jobs
then starts discarding print jobs.

I have edited smb.conf and added both

Max Print Jobs = 2
Total Print Jobs = 21000

But it still doesn't work. Once the queue reaches 1000 print jobs it
starts deleting print jobs to make room for the newer print jobs being
created by the script.

Can anyone give me some advice on what I'm missing..
