[Samba] Samba 3, Windows XP SP1
Hello everyone, I am having a problem I can't find an answer to. Background: We had a RH 7.3/8.0 box with samba 2.2.7. Workstations were Windows 2000. We have 5 roaming users with laptops. when the roaming users would go home, they were able to log into the laptops without the presence of the domain (an yes, they were logging into the domain user at home). Current problem: Running RH 9.0 with samba 3.0 (I have not installed the 3.01 path yet). Workstations are all Windows XP with SP1. We still have 5 laptop users. When they go home, however, they are not able to log into the computer without the domain. it tells them the domain is not available. I have tried all the reg hacks; I have tried the local security policy fix; I have tried adding a local user with the same name; I have added the address for the server to the Wins setting in windows. Nothing seems to work. Can someone please lead me in the correct direction? I'm pulling out what's left of my hair. thanks Darin -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] samba 3 and WinXP (again)
Hello everyone, I have a redhat 9 server running with Samba 3.0. It's a bit different than the previous version, but I'm finally getting used to it. Here's my biggest issue: This is a server for approx. 15 clients, all but one running WinXP. Previously, we were running 2.2.8 w/ Win2K clients. In the past, we were able to log into the local computers, even when we didn't have a network connection. We were running all stations with local profiles (even thought the server is no longer running, I have a copy of the conf file). Now, we're running XP with version 3 of Samba. Now, even though we are all running local profiles, no one can log in without a network connection. I've read the smb.conf.5 many, many times. I've re-written the conf file a number of times, but nothing I do fixes the problem. This is becoming a bigger issue now that I've moved the owner and programmers over to this new box. Below you will find my current conf file. Any help would be greatly appreciated! [Samba] XP logins and Samba-3
Afternoon everyone, I'm running RH 9.0 as a PDC with Samba 3.0. I've set the smb.conf as near identical as I can with my old redhat server, running samba 2.2.7. In the past, we were running W2K desktops/laptops. Mobile users, when not connected to the network, were still able to log into the "domain". Now, we're running XP Pro. When the users log into the network, everything's fine. However, when not connected to the network, the users can't log into the computer under their local, non-roaming profile. The pop-up window tells me the domain is not available. Could this problem be a result of using Samba-3 instead of 2.2.7? If so, does anyone know of a way around this (besides reverting back to the old version of Samba)? [Samba] RE: 2.2.7a logon script will not run (Rich Forman)
Rich, Within the past 6 or 8 months, I to have upgraded my Samba to 2.2.7a. My Conf file is similar to yours, except for your script path. What I have is a global parameter of "logon script=" and then a [netlogon] share for the script path. with that setup, I'm able to map drivers, set the time, run liveupdate automatically and run "Automatic Updates" on my W2K machines. [Samba] Use client driver
Good day everyone, Just a quick question. When using Samba 2.2.7a and Cups 1.17 or 1.18, is it good or bad to use "Use client driver" as a share setting on the Printers share? I used it with LPD, but I'm not real sure it's necessary with cups. Thanks in advance Darin Bawden TeamDME! I would like to apologize to all on the samba list. The quesiton I sent earlier was not meant to go to this list. It was meant for a Linux users group list. Please accept the apology of a very red-in-the-face boobus maximus! Next time, I'll try to keep it more professional and on topic! [Samba] [OT} Speakeasy.net
A little off topic this morning...I'm thinking about switching out of Comast's clutches to another high-speed service. I've tried TDS DSL, but they were half the speed comast was/is. I''ve looked into Speakeasy, since I heard a few of ya talking about them. Since I had TDS, that kinda tells me I can get DSL. I live in Mount Juliet, on MT juliet road, behind the Arbys/Captain Dee's area. Any other ideas? [Samba] Samba/CUPS printing again
Hello...again...Y'all are getting sick of me, aren't ya? ;) Anyway, I am having quite the dilemna about printing. I'm using samba 2.2.7a aong with cups-1.1.5. I know this is an old version of cups, but this is a production server and I don't want to fool with it yet. Anyway, we have 2 printers: HP laser Jet 4 Plus and an Office Jet R80. each are running off a jet direct. One is located in address x.x.x.32, the other in x.x.x.38. We can print to the laserjet without a problem. However, we are completely unable to print to the office jet. I can print a test page from teh CUPS web GUI and from the bash prompt from the server box itself. However, when anything is sent from windows, it never prints. There's no record of it ever reaching the que. I'm not sure where to look for info. it's acting like the windows machine are not sending the print files to the Cups que. It never hits the page_log as a job. When I look at the properties of the printer, the samba printer port is not checked. When I check it and hit apply, it tells "Printer settings could not be saved. Access denied" My network username is part of the root group, and I've set the printer admin and domain admin to include it, so I should have the rights to do whatever I want. Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this? as a side not, does anyone happen to have an enumports script that I can use? I'm not a script writer, so I would have any idea where to start. Thanks in advance...again ;) Darin Bawden, Technical Support Spectrum Software, Inc (615) 333-1900 -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

RE: [Samba] RH8 and Samba 3
You would think so. However, according to the Samba docs, if i"m using cups I should set this to cups. At least, that's my understanding. Also, I've a production server running samba 2.2.7a w/out any problems, and its smb.conf is set to =cups. that's why I'm confused. [Samba] Samba printing and CUPS
Well, I have a strange one again. Using samba version 2.2.5 and cups version 1.1.15. We have 2 printers over the network, both TCP/IP-based Jetdirect printers. on is on x.x.x.32, the other on x.x.x.38. I can print to the laserjet on IP 32 all day long. However, both on Windows clients, print jobs are not even seen in the que (either windows print que or CUPS web interface). When I try to send a print job from the CUPS server to the ip 38, it actually sent the job to the printer on IP 32. I can, if necessary, setup a new printer going directly to that IP address, but I'd like some control over the que. I just sent a job to the .38, and here's the first part of the error_log: StartJob: argv = "paper1","63","root","test1.txt","1","prettyprint","/var/spool/cups/d00063-0 01" D [18/Nov/2002:10:54:22 -0600] StartJob: envp = "PATH=/usr/lib/cups/filter:/bin:/usr/bin","SOFTWARE=CUPS/1.1","USER=root","C HARSET=iso-8859-1","LANG=en_US","TZ=GMT","PPD=/etc/cups/ppd/paper1.ppd","CUP S_SERVERROOT=/etc/cups","RIP_MAX_CACHE=8m","TMPDIR=/var/spool/cups/tmp","CON TENT_TYPE=text/plain","DEVICE_URI=socket://10.1.1.32:9100/","PRINTER=paper1" ,"CUPS_DATADIR=/usr/share/cups","CUPS_FONTPATH=/usr/share/cups/fonts","","", "" Does anyone have any idea what I've done wrong? I have 2 boxes running Redhat 8.0 I've now updated both boxes to samba-2.2.6-2 each time, I receive the following error at the very last part: error: %postnun(2.2.5-10) scriptlet failed, exit status 1 warning: /etc/xinetd.d/swat save as /etc/xinetd.d/swat.rpmsave. It then brings me back to a command prompt. Should I be worried about this? I'm getting ready to update my production file server, running RH 7.3 and samba 2.2.3. to the 2.2.6-1 Thanks Darin Bawden -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba
[Samba] PDC and logon script
Hi everyone, I have a question about the logon script command. I've read and read and read the man page for smb.conf. In essence, I've duplicated the settings on the PDC how-to document to create a PDC with a logon script. However, when I log in, the scrips doesn't run. The only thing I don't have enabled, like the how-to, is roaming profiles. I'll include my smb.conf for review. I'm running 2.2.5 at work. I have a second Samba at home, with roaming profiles, but it doesn't work there, either (it's running 2.2.6). Any help would be much appreciated. Re: [Samba] Password expiration
Andrew, I haven't tinkered at all with 3.0. Meaning this next question with all respect...how stable is it? Is it stable enough to use on a production file/login/print server? [Samba] Password expiration
Well, now that my feet are wet, I thought I would ask another, hopefully less confusing question. As I said in the confusing email about printing, I've set Samba to be a PDC. What I'm wondering is if I can setup the users' passwords to expire after a specific time frame? If so, how do I get it to warn users ahead of time? Thanks once again :) Darin Bawden TeamDME! [Samba] DNS server and printing.
Good afternoon, This is my first post, so please be gentle ;) Anyway, here's my questionI've recently put together a Linux Server for our company, replacing an old Novel server. I have the box set up with Samba, as a PDC on our network. So far, just about everything is working correctly. One issue I'm coming up against, though, is printing from DOS. I have Samba set up to print with LPRNG, using the client drivers (reason for that is it keeps the default settings for each user on their machine. If there's a better way, than enlightenment would be great). Anyway, the problem we are having is, when printing from DOS, it's spitting out the printer setup at the top of the first page and it's unformatted. If need be, I can send the conf file for review (I'm not sure which sections to send). Oh, and in case it hasn't shown yet, I've only been working with Linux for about 18 months now. Second question isn't a problem, it's more of idle curiosity. We have a router set up at a 10.1.*.* address internally. We used to have a Citrix box that was the DHCP server. we've received our DNS servers from our provider, which I've plugged into the DHCP config file pointing out to the external world. What, if any benefits, would I receive if I were to set up the Samba server to include DNS support? But then again, is this even a question I should be asking here! LOL thanks in advance!
