RE: [Samba] problem configuring smbd for domain authentication

2003-02-24 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
with AD / Win2k you have to use encrypted passwords. to Create a password
file for Samba:

# cat /etc/passwd | mksmbpasswd.sh > /etc/samba/smbpasswd

# chmod 600 /etc/samba/smbpasswd

# smbpasswd

Encrypted passwords must be enabled in the smb.conf

in the [global] section

encrypt password = yes
smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

Subject: [Samba] problem configuring smbd for domain authentication

Hello everyone, I am trying to configure a Samba 2.2 server to allow users
to mount their home
directories (stored on a UNIX filesystem) from Windows after authenticating
against a Windows 2000
Domain Controller.

The Samba server is 2.2.3a compiled with acl support on Solaris 8. I think
I am experiencing some (hopefully)
basic configuration issues and can't seem to get it to work. I really hope
some can help!

The name of our Windows 2000 Domain is ad The domain controller is
(aptly named) dc. I have placed a static
record in WINs for the samba server, and added a record to the Active
Directory Computers container for it as well.
The domain controller is a mixed-mode controller (I read in the docs that
doesn't make any difference but I thought
I'd mention it) and it the only domain controller for the AD domain.

With the command, "smbpasswd -r DC -j ad... -UAdministrator%mypassword", I
get a successful response:
Joined domain AD.

However, when I get on a Windows 2000 machine (which is also a member of the
domain AD), and try
to mount \\mysambaserver\acls as a user who is already authenticated in the
AD domain, it fails
(the windows end seems to hang and *eventually* prompts me for another
username password) and
I see the following in my samba logs:

 cli_net_auth2: Error NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED

I used:
!rotest2 = rotest2

If anyone would like any more information I'd be happy to provide it. I am
really stumped right now as I think everything I am

be most grateful for any assistance.

[Samba] Samba error

When I (who has an account on the samba server -- under the same name)

through Network Neighborhood, I get an error message that says
"\\(workstationname)\ The parameter is incorrect". however if I go to a
computer where someone else is logged on, double click on the Samba server,
it prompts with with a login screen, I can login as me, and it works...

What is causing this?

2003-02-21 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
In my logs now I am getting codepage errors, I am not sure what the
codepages do if someone could please explain it to me right quick that would

It seems as if I am missing three distinct files.

/usr/share/samba/codepages/unicode_map.ISO8859-1
/usr/share/samba/codepages/unicode_map.850
/usr/share/samba/codepages/codepage.850

This shows up in the log.winbindd and smbd.log

Anyone know where i can get these files?

[Samba] Winbind / AD

2003-02-20 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
AD W2K -- Native mode.
Samba 2.2.5 -- Redhat 8.0

Attempting to authenticate the login with the Domain Controller. I can log
into the Redhat box locally, and browse around the domain with
LinNeighborhood. However, this is what I want.

When a person boots RH 8.0, they get the login prompt. When they type in
their login and password at the inital login I want it to be able to sync
with the Domain Controller to see if A) they are allowed to login to the
domain, B) Password is right, current, C) see if their account is locked...
etc etc...

I am assuming this is done through LDAP and Kerberos authentication with the
Domain Controller, however, I am getting errors. Pasted here is a copy of

[Samba] Okay I am confused

2003-02-19 Thread Esler, Joel Contractor
I allowed my RedHat Linux box to join the W2K domain, by adding the Netbios
name and Ip into the W2K AD Domain Controller. Now I have a fully
functioning file and print server.

When I browse Network Neighborhood from a W2K client box on the same domain,
I see my user, a test Share that I have created, and Printers. Even though
I have no printers. How do I turn off the printers.

Also.

My biggest challenege and state of confusion.

I am setting up 22 laptops, dual booted with W2K and Redhat Linux. I want
to make the Linux porition of the boxes work just like the Windows. I am
going to try and download LinNeighborhood and see what the deal is. But,
when people boot up their red hat box, and get to the run level 5 login
screen...

Can I make the user name and password they enter there authenticate with my
W2K AD DC? Just like a Linux box? So that when I change their password or
disable their account throught the DC, it will trickle down the the Linux
boxes?

Joel,

As far as I know, Samba doesn't quite work in the fashion that
you are expecting. However, there are a few things that Samba and
supporting applications will do for you.

To have something like a "Network Neighborhood", I can only
recommend an application called LinNeighborhood. You should be able to
locate the application by searching either www.freshmeat.net or
www.sourceforge.com. It is a very usable and easy to figure out
application. There are a few things that you will need to do, in order
for it to be accessible to all users on the Linux workstation. Which you
will have to look through the FAQs for, it has been to long since I have
had to make that accessible to all users on a Linux system. I do know
that it has to do with setting the 'suid' bit on one or more files
relating to the application.

As for your site being able to see the Linux machine in Network
Neighborhood, but being unable to access it from Windows systems. We
would need to see how you have your smb.conf file configured to assist
you in finding out what the deal is. If that is not possible, I am
certain that a working file could be forwarded your way to create a
testing environment to confirm the changes you may need to make.

There is also one other component that might be missing, as you
hadn't stated what you have completed thus far.

If you haven't created Samba user accounts, which are separate
yet require existing Linux system accounts, there is no real method to
access the Linux system from a Windows system.

The final piece you mention is, from what I know, currently
impossible under Linux. While Windows 2000 does use a MS modified
Kerberos system, I understand that it is quite different then the true
Kerberos standard. To have network-wide authentication, you could look
at developing an LDAP system, which the MS systems should be able to use
for authentication.

Unfortunately, the last part you request an answer on is
something that I haven't had to look at myself. So, the information that
I do have on that is rather limited.

I hope that the information I have provided you is adequate to
move forward with the tasks you have. Good luck.

Where is the "network neighborhood" in Linux? Also, the big
question...

I need, (upon boot) in runlevel 5, that the Linux box will authenticate
with
the W2K Domain Controller, just like any Windows Client on the network.

After boot, I can go into Network Neighborhood, and I can see the name of
the computer. When I double click on it it's unaccessible. Also, I can't
see the network from the Linux box, I can ping it all, but I can't see it.

Where is the "network neighborhood" in Linux? Also, the big question...

I need, (upon boot) in runlevel 5, that the Linux box will authenticate with
the W2K Domain Controller, just like any Windows Client on the network.
