[Samba] 16-bit application

2005-02-02 Thread Spike Burkhardt
  I've got a really weird problem. A user is running a 16-bit
application called Jetform V2.2, originally from Delrina but now
supported by Adobe. The user is storing the data files on their local
disk but the forms sit on a samba share. We have moved the data files
to samba as well and this is where the weirdness comes in. When the
application tries to open a file it brings down a pulldown list and in
the list is the DOS filename. When the files were local the names
listed were the Windows filenames. The same behavior is shown when the
data files are on a Novell volume so it seems like it's not a Samba
issue. Does anyone have a clue on how to get the Windows filename to be
listed? Thanks for the help.

Re: [Samba] reload configuration without a stop ?

2005-01-31 Thread Spike Burkhardt
By default Samba will read the configuration file every 60 seconds so no HUP
is needed. I have however done this without affecting currently connected
users. The caveat is that if configuration changes are made to shares that
users are already connected to, those changes will not be seen. If changes
to the underlying UNIX file system is changed(protectecions primarily) then
another set of problems may occur.

Alistair,

Caveat: I have no experience on SCO but if it were Solaris I'd look at
/etc/system. the IPC and semaphore count. Additionally look at your system log
file. For Solaris it's /var/adm/messages. It seems to me like a system
resource limitation problem, not Samba. I'll also give you the "pat" answer -
upgrade samba to at least 2.2.12, preferrably 3.0.10

The only difference between using samba normally & VPN would be thru
Security. We found that if Security = Domain, the machine would need to be
registered in the domain. We decided that we didn't want that kind of

Re: [Samba] samba v3 slow with 'security = server'

2005-01-03 Thread Spike Burkhardt
Anthony,

I don't think changing authentication to 'security = Domain' would help a
performance problem. I'd make sure that you're not running into memory,
disk or network congestion problems. I forget the number but there is a
recommended amount of memory/user so knowing the number of connections is
important. Memory usage can make a huge difference in a Solaris
environment. Make sure there hasn't been any changes in usage either. There
are lots of areas that could affect this but those would be my starting
points.

Re: [Samba] Migrating from Samba 2.2.8 to 3.x on different machine

2004-12-28 Thread Spike Burkhardt
Jorick,

If you're having problems then I'd scale back on all the changes. Basically
I'd install the 3.0.10 software, copy over the smb.conf and first see if that
works. I'd then do the domain name, switch to ldap & finally to the rename.
This last part depends on whether ldap has the desired username. See below
for how I'd attack the problem.

Do this first.

   * Install 3.0.10 on the new machine.
   * Copy the smb.conf file from the old machine to the new machine.
   * Startup and test.
   * If it fails, post the results with the appropriate log entries and your
 smb.conf file.

 - switch to a ldap backend

Do this third.

   * After the first two steps are successfully completed, populate LDAP with
the appropriate info without the renaming of accounts.
   * Make your smb.conf changes. This could be where changing company names
would make a difference. You'll need to know this information such as
 OU, admin password...
   * Verify that samba is connecting to the LDAP server. Even at the lowest
levels of log messages, you should see a "connected" message.
   * After successfully connecting and mounting a share with LDAP add the new
usernames without taking out the old ones.

>
> - change the domain name (our company name has changed)

Do this second.
Are you saying that the workgroup has changed? If so then change it in
smb.conf. If the workgroup hasn't changed then there is no need.

Do this last.

   * Instead of renaming the LDAP usernames, add the new usernames.
   * Mount a share with the new username
   * If not successful then post the results with the appropriate log entries
 and your smb.conf file

HTH.

the Open_ldap libraries. In my configuration I did not specify any kerberos.

I'll make some assumptions here.
1. First is that the samba server is the same server in NEW_NETWORK as in
OLD_NETWORK.
2. All accounts in OLD_NETWORK have been migrated to AD realm on NEW_NETWORK.
3. Authentication and authorization are currently done on the NT4 servers.
4. Authentication and authorization will be done on the AD servers.

When you turn off the NT 4 servers, you will need to change the smb.conf file
to reflect the new AD stuff. For instance, you'll need to point to the new
password server; specify the AD realm (realm = xxx) and the workgroup the
server is in.

>
> Also, with OLD_NETWORK turned off, how will I be able to add a new

Don't know. In our environment, a new user get's an account created on the AD
server and then on the samba server. Both are manual processes.

>
> Right now Samba is currently validating users by looking at the PDC
> of OLD_NETWORK.

See above. If validation will occur on the AD server, smb.conf will need to
get modified. I have tested validating to a NT server on a AD network with no
issues at all. Samba is simply amazing!

HTH.

[Samba] writeable vs readonly precedence

2004-10-27 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

I've got a user in two different UNIX groups. I have a share defined
in my smb.conf file where one of the groups has read-only access and the
other group has writeable=Yes access. The share is defined as this:

[db_apps]
 path = /db_apps
 valid users = @tc_users @tc_adm
 write list = @tc_adm
 read list = @tc_users
 force group = tc_adm
 browseable = no
 writeable = Yes

My question is this: which permissions will the user who is in both
groups have? Thanks for your help!

[Samba] print que not updating

2004-10-18 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

There was a similar thread in August but I'm not sure if this is the
same problem. Basically what's happening is that I'm printing a desktop
file(Word/Excel/IE) to a printer served up on my samba server. The job
prints, the file get deleted on the server but in my system tray, it
seems like the job never gets removed from the que or it's extremely
slow. Sometimes the job does get deleted from the que. It seems like
once the job doesn't get removed from the que it won't unless I
specifically cancel the job or I restart the samba server. I'm running
3.0.6 on Solaris 8. The desktop is NT 4 SP6. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

[Samba] netlogon scripts

2004-10-05 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

If I want to specify a logon script, does security need to be set to
Domain? The issue is that we have authentication at the PDC/BDC so that
our VPN users can map drives on their home PC's. Is there a different
way to do a logon script other than setting the SECURITY = DOMAIN?

I am running 2.2.8a (planning on 2.2.12) on Solaris 8. Thanks for
your help.

[Samba] LDAP with Netscape 4 & Solaris 8

2004-08-24 Thread Spike Burkhardt
Hey all,

I'm trying to get Samba 3.0.4 to work with Netscape Directory Server
4.x with LDAP. The problem is that I'm not getting authenticated thru
LDAP. I've tried searching the archives(MARC), google and can find some
info but nothing seems to fix it. I've loaded the Netscape V4 schema
from the examples/LDAP.

Included at the end is both my smb.conf file and my LDIF record. I
think I'm fairly close. In my LDIF record, I don't see anything about
sambaSamAccount. Once I insert the schema into LDAP, do I need to do
anything else with the directory server? I just want to use LDAP for
password authentitcation. I can connect to ldap server. In
troubleshooting I've increased the log level to 9 and when I do a

[Samba] ACL propogation

2004-07-28 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

I have a share defined as such:

[sharename]
  path = /projects/tc
  valid users = @tc_users
  force group = tc_users
  writeable = Yes

everything works fine with this. I have been asked to modify this
definition such that there will be a subdirectory /projects/tc/draco
where access to /projects/tc/draco is by users in the UNIX group
tc_draco. Only users in this group can have write access. This is on a
Solaris 8 system. My question is this: Short of having Solaris ACL's,
is there a way to do this in samba without defining a share for this one
directory?

Thanks for you help.

Jon,

I'm using the Security = SERVER due to the fact that the machines that will be used
aren't in the domain. I'm not using the smbpasswd file. I have not joined the
domain but on the two other servers I've setup I haven't had to. I'll try it and let
you know. As to the authenticating, how can I tell if it's using smbpasswd?

[Samba] Domain problem with NT4 & Samba 3.0.2a

2004-06-10 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

I really need some help. I'm putting samba up on a new windows domain
called SIERRA. I'm using Samba 3.0.2a on Solaris 8. I'm barely
knowledgeable on Windows NetBIOS... but am good with Solaris. The
status is that I've got the daemons running and working normally. I
have 1 desktop with 1 PDC & 1 BDC in the SIERRA domain. On the desktop,
I can see both DC's but not the samba server. As a non-priviledged
account, when I issue a smbclient -L moon I get the following output:

moon:/home/burkharr> smbclient -L moon

When I issue the same command substituting localhost for moon I get the
following output:
moon:/home/burkharr> smbclient -L localhost

Notice that I don't get any NetBIOS errors which makes sense because I'm
not going out on the network.

Here's my smb.conf file:
moon:/home/burkharr> more /apps/samba/lib/smb.conf
# Global parameters

workgroup = SIERRA
netbios name = moon

comment = Spike's testing

create mask = 740

Any thoughts? Thanks for your help.

information in LDAP. I built samba with the following options:

./configure --with-acl-support --with-automount --with-ldapsam
--with-logfilebase=/var/samba/log --with-quotas
--prefix=/usr/local/samba

After configuring the smb.conf file I try to start smbd and get the
following message:

ld.so.1: /usr/local/sbin/smbd: fatal: libldap.so.2: open failed: No such

>From truss, it's telling me that it can't find the libldap.so.2 in

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a with Solaris 8 & NIS

2004-01-14 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

The basic info is that I'm running Samba 2.2.8a on a Solaris 8 machine
with NIS. The hostname is altair and is a NIS slave. As a standard
practice every employee get's a NIS account and altair is their samba
home. NIS is set to compatibility mode in /etc/nsswitch.conf. Samba
security is set to server. It appears that for users to map to their
samba share, we need to have an entry for them in the netgroup file.
The side effect of this is that they also get command line access which
we don't want. Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

TIA,

ascmdev nguyenal tcmsdev 5654 orton(158.184.58.145) Tue
Dec 9 14:14:10 2003
burkharr burkharr other26688 le15970 (158.184.88.151) Mon
Dec 8 08:08:55 2003
wanggwanggother 4846 summersun (158.184.88.138) Tue
Dec 9 12:06:10 2003

ps -ef|grep 5654 yields:
root 5654 890 0 14:14:06 ?0:00 /apps/samba/sbin/smbd -D

I want to disconnect nguyenal from the ascmdev share. Shouldn't I be
able to do a:

smbcontrol 5654 close-share ascmdev

TIA,

Spike

[Samba] Samba 2.2.8a ldap compile problem with pdb_ldap.c

2003-10-16 Thread Spike Burkhardt
All,

I am trying to compile 2.2.8a with the ldapsam, acl-support & pam.
The make appears to go ok but the compile part doesn't. At the
beginning of the compiles it lists out the flags:

Using FLAGS = -O -I./popt -Iinclude -I./include -I./ubiqx
-I./smbwrapper -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -D_FILE_OFFSET_BITS=64

[Samba] delete user script is not working from usrmgr

2003-06-24 Thread Spike Burkhardt
Hi,

I am very new to Samba but I do know Solaris. The /usr/sbin/userdel
is expecting a username that is in the /etc/passwd file. The -r is to
delete the specified users home directory tree. The %u is Samba"ese"
designating the username but none of the shells in Solaris(ksh, csh, sh)
know what %u is. Am I making sense? What I'm trying to say is that you
can't mix up Samba variables in the Solaris command line interface. I
hope this helps!

[Samba] administration

2003-06-23 Thread Spike Burkhardt
Hi!

I have a question. We are going to make SAMBA our production file
server for the NT desktops. I need some functionality where multiple
users may need access to SWAT for configuration purposes. We don't want
to give out the root password. At first I thought it would be the
"admin users" option but that's not it. Firstly, does Samba have this
functionality and if so, how do I configure it?

Thanks!
