What's so hard about using even like Webmin/SWAT for that?

After removing the OLD smb.conf and editing the "original" one, it's
back to normal - but can't set it up as "allow domain logins" - going to
poke through it more - strange that.

I moved my original smb.conf and secrets.tdb to a new installation of
MDK 10.0 OE; what used to be a great working system no longer works;
I've checked all the configs via Webmin/Samba/Swat modules, and still,
nothing is working. Either from a windows machine or another linux

(or at least I think I did it right) but still, no access.

Any help? I can post my smb.conf if necessary - was also wondering if

* Printer is on linux box

* Need to have Windows machines able to get drivers from linux box

I recall there was some way to get this done - or have I drank too much

If you've already gotten the actual networking bits going, you should be
able to use Webmin to setup the printer actually very easily. If you
can't do it through the Mandrake Control Centre, and you can't do it
through the CUPS admin web tool, Webmin is your best bet, and easiest of
all to use for this purpose.

I just did something similar to this - but ended up exporting the data
from PST files to the Samba Server as it was running IMAP as a server
service - it was long and drawn out, but after getting all the crap from
heaps of different PST's copied up there, it works like a charm - minus
having to have MS Exchange around - all the users connect to a "public"
account and can view/change/move/add stuff as they wish - although in a
limited tree fashion as you can't add subdirectories under folders - but
that's alright. Much easier to clean with an antivirus package as well.

On the machine that you've just set up, did you specify a different
netbios name for the server? As well, did you restart the samba
services? You might want to post the /etc/samba/smb.conf for further
resolution of the issue...

You should be able to run "serviceconf" and put a tick next to the
service you want to run - but Samba SHOULD be running by default. Either
which, running "serviceconf" and then doing a "save" will ensure that
it's starting at bootup - if it isn't already.

Another thing to do is when it dies or if you want to restart it, is to
open a term and run:

service smb --full-restart

Aside from playing with the oplocks, has this program been installed on
a network before, or in a manner similar but using drive letters beyond
C:\ and D:\ ? Because it would seem to me (thinking of an application
issue first) that since the program is unable to locate owndb.dll, it's
not necessarily able to search in that path for the dll...? Just a
thought, though...

What perms are setup on the Samba shares? Oh, and what application is
this that is "choking and puking"? I tried in vain to locate onwdb.dll
all over the place, so I can't identify the application...

I'd like to point out that MDK 9 DOES have some firewall issues - with
the built-in stuff - most users end up removing it altogether and using
a different package other than the one that comes bundled with MDK.

If you can manage to NOT install the Shorewall (or whatever it's called)
from the MDK installation, I think you might fare a tad bit better on
the initial setup of Samba...
...can't hurt to try.

David - seeing that you've already made modifications to your
/etc/samba/smb.conf file, is it safe to assume that you've already setup
the workgroup/domain name as being the same as the Windows boxes? Here
is a sample of what mine looks like:

[global]
workgroup = KMA
netbios name = KMA1
netbios aliases = kma1
server string = KMA1
security = SHARE
null passwords = Yes
pam password change = Yes
username map = /etc/samba/user.map
unix password sync = Yes
log file = /var/log/samba/%m.log
max log size = 0
keepalive = 2
socket options =
SO_KEEPALIVE SO_BROADCAST
TCP_NODELAY IPTOS_THROUGHPUT
SO_SNDBUF=16384 SO_RCVBUF=16384

preferred master = Yes
default service = global
guest ok = Yes

[tmp]
comment = Temporary file space
path = /tmp
read only = No
public= Yes

[var]
comment = Web and Temp Space
path = /var
read only = No
public = Yes

...and as far as the "same username/password on both machines" -
sometimes you have to reset the unix smb username and password to get it
working properly ...(and of course, if you make changes to any of this,
please make sure to restart the smb server - or reboot)

Are you also using SWAT to do your configurations via the browser?

It's really getting to be an annoying thing - and almost wanting to just

I just can't believe how stupid this is getting - all just to print

[Samba] Printing problems

2002-12-08 Thread Stephen Kuhn
I'm using Samba 2.2.7, RH 7.3, CUPS printing to a Canon BJC-265SP,
accessing the "shared" printer via either regular network connection
from a WinXP workstation or via VMWare WinXP; I've "shared" the printer
via Samba, but when printing, instead of EOL's, the printer is receiving
EOP's - (for each line printed to the printer, a new sheet gets put in
instead of an end-of-line)...hence, printing is not good.

Any suggestions?

TIA,
Stephen

Unless you get a third party program, NFS is NOT available for Windows;
SMB/NMB (Windows compatible) is the only way to go.

somehow - or am I too tired and should I go to bed?

Being that I have to run both linux and XP on the same computer (sad,
but true), it would be nice to be able to write to the VFAT whilst
running SAMBA...but if not, well, all the more reason to dump M$...

TIA! Cheers!

Setup the linux-laptop to use DHCP for it's IP configuration - reboot - you should be
able to get online after that...
assuming, though, that the Windows machine is setup for internet
connection sharing...

Try this:
>From a term, run /usr/sbin/swat (watch what happens) - then attempt to
access SWAT via your browser. Otherwise, use Webmin to get to it.

met a blonde named Circe on the streetcar, and didn't come back for 20

For whatever reason, I wasn't able to get to SWAT until I installed
Webmin...also, prior to running Webmin and rebooting, I ran
/usr/sbin/swat just for giggles and grins - after the reboot, and after
getting into Webmin, I was able to get into SWAT via the SERVERS\SAMBA
SERVER icon in Webmin...

...same thing happened on my last 7.2 box, and this is a 7.3 box...like
I said - for whatever reason...dunno...

What about doing this a different way: Double click NETWORK NEIGHBORHOOD,then double
click on the server, highlight the printer you want (the Ricoh), right click it, then
in the dialogue box, choose INSTALL; after doing that, go back to the PRINTERS folder,
right click on that printer, choose properties, and verify the network print path?
Just throwing this out to see if that might resolve the issue...

Never ask two questions in a business letter. The reply will discuss
the one you are least interested, and say nothing about the other.

"Never laugh at live dragons, Bilbo you fool!" he said to himself, and
it became
a favourite saying of his later, and passed into a proverb. "You aren't
nearly
through this adventure yet," he added, and that was pretty true as well.
