I have redhat 9, and did a rpm -Uvh to the latest release. I am now seeing
these errors quite often (didn't before upgrade) and I've also noticed some
names aren't resolving like: 192.168.1.102.log instead of machine1.log.
Samba is not the wins server (looks to a windows machine). Security is
share.
Any thoughts would be helpful!

Hi,

I've got samba up and running, but I have the guest ok = yes option.
Now I have the book Using Samba by o'reilly, and if I'm correct this setting
should enable be to access the share without using a username/password,
however it doesn't work, then if I enter a valid samba user when it prompts
it works fine!

I've included my smb.conf file, any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm
also new to linux, so could it be something to do with the permissions for
this folder?

Next month I will move about 3000 clients (w2k) to a PDC samba, after that I
will have more 1200 clients, but this time will be Linux, my question is:

1- Is there domain logon, like we have for Windows users ?

2- is smb the protocol recommended to FileShare to Linux clients or NFS is
better (is there another one) ?

RE: [Samba] Samba and MS Access Problems]

2002-10-14 Thread Tony Nichols

We have ms sql 2000 (our accounting software) so it was easy to export
directly to ms sql; then import link to bring the tables back in. No
data lost

I have seen somewhere a module for MySql that will do it if your not
using ms sql .
1. http://www.mdb2mysql.de/ free ...
2. http://www.dmsofttech.com/downloads.html this one looks very easy but
will only work 30 times before you have to buy it $35.00 US

Hello Tony,

 When one user makes changes to the database, the changes will not be
 seen on the other pcs until the database is closed an reopened. We
 made some tests with several samba options e.g. file locking, oplocks

 and strict locking, also with sync after writes but nothing helped.

 When we copy the database to a windows nt server, the problem
 disappears and everything works fine.

 Make sure under tools, options the default open mode is shared My

 problems had been op locks They all went away after I exported
 the tables to a sql server then re-imported them as links.

I have read your thread because I have this Problem.
Gives it an way to export direct the tables and the content of the
tables or must I create the Tabeles manually?

Thnaks a lot.

RE: [Samba] Samba+MYOB

2002-10-11 Thread Tony Nichols
I'm using it at a tax business (along with tax wise) and it has been
working fine however there are only 2 people logged in at the same
time.
Config is
RedHat 7.3
Samba 2.2.4-3 (installed via rpm)
Config for share:
public = yes
   writable = yes
   guest ok = yes
   printable = no
   dos filetimes = yes
Clients are:
Win2k sp2
win98
winme

I expect the biggest improvement would be to go to Samba 2.2.5
I plan to upgrade it next month to the newest version (2.2.6 I hope!)

Hope that helps!

Hello all,

We are experiencing problems using MYOB Premier V6.0.2 on Windows 2000
computers SP3, with the data file residing on shared drive on Linux
(Redhat 7.2) file server running Samba Version 2.2.1a and kernel
2.4.9-34.

The MYOB Tech support have told me that it is a problem with our network
but could not give me any hints where the problem might be.

The MYOB database has been corrupted at least 8 times over the last 4
days and every time we have to go back to our backups thereby losing all
of the transactions entered in the interim.

Has anyone had any experience with a similar problem and could give me
any suggestions?

Following is the smb.conf configuration related to the MYOB share

[myob]
comment = MYOB Directory
path = /data/MYOB
read only = No
admin users = @myob
Any Help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks,

Ramzi

Subject: [Samba] Samba and MS Access Problems

Hi there,

we have a problem regarding MS Access with Samba.
We have 4 users which open a database at the same time. When one user

windows nt server, the problem disappears and everything works fine.

Does anyone has a proposal what problem we run into ?

Here is our smb.conf:

[global]
 debug level = 3
 dns proxy = no
 security = user
 workgroup = Edv
 server string = Samba Server ka029a
 socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_RCVBUF=8192 SO_SNDBUF=8192
 netbios name = ka029a
 log file = /var/log/samba/log.%m
 load printers = yes
 netbios aliases = cal-serv
 printcap name = /etc/printcap
 max log size = 50

[calibration_data]
 path = /db/others/calibration_data
 hide dot files = no
 browseable = no
 writeable = yes
 create mode = 700
 directory mode = 700
 share modes = no
 map system = yes
 force group = root
 read list = cal_reader
 map hidden = yes
 valid users = cal391,cal392,cal393,cal394,
 delete readonly = yes
 locking = no
 force user = root

It was necessary to set the force user = root flag to make it possible
to
open the database from each pc at the same time. We are quite new in the

linux and samba business so it would be great if someone could help us.

Thanks in advance

FW: [Samba] oplock break on excel files using samba 2.2.4

2002-06-03 Thread Tony Nichols

I'm having the same kind of problem too. Links to other excel workbooks
are really breaking badly. One of them so bad that if I highlight the
file through a windows explorer view; it kills the window immediately.
I'm using RH 7.2 and Samba 2.2.4 -1

Please let me know if someone has some suggestions
So far I've tried:
 veto oplock files = /*.mdb/*.MDB/*.ldb/*.LDB/*.xls/*.XLS

Thanks!

Hi,

I search for a solution about the oplock break problem that occurs
sometimes on my RH7.0 / Samba 2.2.4 machine when accessing Excel files
on a Samba share. I didn't find any solution on the Net or on this list
about this.

* Is there a solution without disabling oplock ?

* Is it a RedHat or a Samba problem ?

Thanks in advance for your help.

RE: [Samba] SMB sharing under Mac OS X Server

2002-05-23 Thread Tony Nichols

Try a very simple config file that has no security (just to test).

[global]

# workgroup = NT-Domain-Name or Workgroup-Name
   workgroup = your workgroup name

# server string is the equivalent of the NT Description field
   server string = Samba Server

   security = share

   local master = no

   os level = 5

   name resolve order = wins lmhosts bcast

   wins server = 192.168.1.2 (your wins server)

# Share Definitions
==

[tmp]
   comment = Temporary file space
   path = /tmp
   read only = no
   public = yes
   guest ok = yes

Good Luck!

 Hello all:

 I've scoured the web for a solution to this problem to no avail, and
 thought someone on this list might be able to point me in the proper
 direction... I realize this isn't the best place for Macintosh help,
 but it is Samba related, so please bear with me :-)

 Some quick background: I have a Power Mac G4 Dual GHz machine running
 Mac OS X Server 10.1.4, and have a Micronet SCSI RAID system with one
 shared folder, Data. This server is configured to register with the
 WINS server on the LAN, and is a member of the corporate workgroup.
 Windows clients (mainly W2k) can see the server in Network
 Neighborhood, can log into the server and can see the share Data
 listed. However, they cannot connect to the share. I get the
 message:

 //Server/Data is not accessible. The network name cannot be found.

 I have checked my smb.conf file settings, and it appears to be
 configured properly. I'm almost positive the problem lies with the
 Samba running on OS X, as our Mac clients have no problem connecting
 through Apple File Sharing via TCP/IP. The server is clearly visible
 on the Windows network, but the share cannot be accessed. I'm out of
 ideas!

 Can anyone provide any insight? If this isn't the forum to ask this,
 tell me to bugger off and I won't take offense :-)

 Many thanks in advance for any assistance,

 Jason Westlake

Hello,
I've no expierence with the MAC OS, but did you enter the w2k user who
wants to access the share on the SMB-Server? Check if you need password
encryption or not (on the SMB-Server) Hope this helps.

Best regards,
Roland

Yes, the users have all been added and the server's Win Authentication
is on (we do need it here).
