[Samba] non-English filenames (one more attempt)

2002-10-18 Thread bulia byak
Speaking of the low answer-to-question ratio, here's a question I posted a week ago
but did not get a single answer. Please help me! Before posting, I've searched lots of
docs (unsuccessfully), and the problem is critical for me.

I have a Win98 machine with Russian file names. As suggested in many
places, I put the following into smb.conf:

  client code page = 866
  character set = KOI8-R
  preserve case = yes
  short preserve case = yes
  default case = upper
  case sensitive = yes

Still, the filenames as viewed from Linux are unreadable (and files
are unaccessible). For example, the Russian name of the "My
documents" folder becomes "Н╚©
Я╚╛:03c0~:0393:03b4", a mix of wrong
characters and some hex codes preceded by ":".

The system is Mandrake 8.2. Everywhere else Cyrillic letters show up
fine, including a local fat32 partition, so this is not a problem
with Cyrillic support. I have tried samba 2.2.3a and then 2.2.5, but
the problem persists.

Just in case, here's the line from fstab:

//winbox/C /mnt/c smbfs uid=bulia,password=,user,defaults,fmask=0666
0 0

I tried to add iocharset=koi8-r to this fstab line (as I do for local fat32
partitions) but it didn't help.

[Samba] copying files to windows - permissions, time

2002-10-07 Thread bulia byak

I use Samba to access a Windows 98 box from linux. When I copy a file from linux to
win98, there are two annoying problems:

- it complains it cannot set permissions on the new file on windows - it should
logically ignore all such errors (the FAT volumes mounted in fstab can have a "quiet"
option for this, but it does not work for smbfs volumes).

- the new file gets current date and time, instead of the original file's date and
time.

I've searched through manuals but found nothing about how to fix these annoyances.
Please help!
