[Samba] Samba3 HowTo

2003-11-17 Thread marion.haines
The book is most helpful (I really like books versus electronic methods) and is a
welcome addition to the help and information I get from this list, since
Linux/UNIX/Samba is only part of my job.

For those that asked: I found the first 4 or 5 chapters helped me the most,
initially. This was especially good for those who haven't had a lot of training in
Linux/UNIX or can't/don't follow all the changes in Samba, but are still having to
make various systems work together. As far as other chapters are concerned, they make
me look forward to attempting to implement other features instead of dreading the day
they have to be done.

[Samba] Samba3 HowTo

2003-11-17 Thread marion.haines
For John Terpstra:

Just got your new book from Amazon. All I can say is: VERY GOOD!!! Can easily
recommend it for anyone, especially those of us who just want to make better use of
Samba but aren't Linux gurus/code commandoes!

I wouldn't begin to know how to contribute anything, but I'll certainly continue to
buy and learn from such good material!

[Samba] Off Subject

2003-06-26 Thread marion.haines
Pardon me for asking this general question with regards to Samba but I've been
searching and haven't found a source that would answer my question.

Is there some site, list, etc, that lists companies, schools, etc, who have
volunteered information that they use Samba in their day-to-day operations?

This would be of great interest to us as it would show Linux/Samba to be a viable
solution instead of going exclusively with a Windows-server-based setup.

RE: [Samba] Book on using Samba

2002-09-24 Thread marion.haines

The one other book I rely on, besides "Using Samba" is "SAMBA Essentials for Windows
Administrators" by Gary Wilson (ISBN 0-13-040942-1). It really good if you're coming
from a Microsoft background versus a UNIX background.

I'll start off the discussion, and hopefully, someone else will
have comments on some of the other books. I'm totally biased towards,
err ... myself! ... and members of the Samba Team who have written
books.

You can go to http://www.samba.org and select your nearest mirror
site for the Samba web pages, then click on the "books" link.
You are apparently in Singapore, so it would be here:

http://sg.samba.org/samba/books.html

Since Samba is being developed pretty rapidly over the past
few years, I'd advise selecting a book that has been updated
recently. This pretty much eliminates the one I'm working on
(Using Samba, O'Reilly), for the next few months, anyway,
although you can the first edition (1999) for free in HTML
format in the Samba source code distribution, in the docs/ directory.

For the moment, try SAMS Teach Yourself Samba in 24 Hours, 2nd Edition,
which is by Gerald Carter, a very active member of the Samba Team.
According to the webpage (which happens to be maintained by Jerry
himself) that book was updated just last year.

And if you don't mind waiting a while, the second edition of
Using Samba will be available -- try searching for my name
(Jay Ts) on Amazon.com. There is a listing there for it, although
the description they had last time I looked was for the first
edition.

Also, there is Special Edition, Using Samba, by Richard Sharpe,
another Samba Team member. It was updated in 2000.

There was one more book I which I could mention - I glanced at
it once in a book store, and thought it was pretty decent,
but I don't remember the title or author.

Any other recommendations?

Jay Ts

Thanks for the reply. I'm setting up the NT box with WINS but will have to wait until
after business hours to reboot it. The NT and WINS servers (one of my Samba servers)
are on different networks.

Will let everyone know the results.

The IP number should be of the machine you want to mount from, in this
case the NT box. You shouldn't have to, but you may need to specify the
netbios name of the NT box and give the ip number as a separate option.

smbmount //ntname/manage /mnt/Man -o ip=192.168.204.100

This of course assumes that you have network connectivity from the linux
box to the NT box.

Other potentially useful options are the workgroup option, the uid/gid and
fmask/dmask options. Check the smbmount manpage.

Subject:Re: [Samba] smbmount question

I can reproduce this error on my home system in the following way.

My home system has two subnets.

If I try to smbclient -L a server (XP) on a different subnet, using
smbclient -L 192.168.1.9
I get the following error:

INFO: Debug class all level = 3 (pid 24708 from pid 24708)
added interface ip=192.168.0.2 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
session request to 192.168.1.9 failed (Called name not present)
session request to 192 failed (Called name not present)

However, the shares are all listed and things seem to be normal.

If I use the server winsbios name (which is the same as the dsn name)
smbclient -L elsa, I get the shares listed without any error messages.

This only occurs when I try to smbclient -L to a different subnet.

So, what happens when you try the NT server winsbios name, instead of
the server IP address, assuming you have got a winserver and your linux
box knows about it with the wins server parameter in smb.conf?

[Samba] smbmount question

2002-05-20 Thread marion.haines

I'm on a Redhat 7.1, Samba 2.2.3a server in a share called Public. I'm logged into
the server as root, from the console and have cd'd to the Public directory.

I'm trying to use smbmount to mount an NT share from a WinNT Server 4.0, SP3. The
share on that server is called "manage." The IP of the NT server is 192.168.204.100.
The Samba server is on a different network at 210.111.222.123. There is a directory
named "Man" that will be used as the mount point on the samba server.

I issue the command:

smbmount //210.111.222.123/manage Man then press the Enter key.

password: I enter the password then press the Enter key.

I now get 2 error messages on the console:

955: session request to 210.111.222.123 failed (Called name not present).
955: session request to 210 failed (Called name not present).

When I inspect the Man directory, all the appropriate files and directories are there.
I see them with Network Neighborhood and with Windows Explorer.

Does smbmount really do what I'm expecting it to do with a shared NT directory & files
or is the above responses normal? Is there something else to do???

Thanks in advance,
