Re: [Samba] Backup Domain Controller

2007-04-10 Thread Jason Baker
On a related note. How do I know if my BDC is actually working? I am
able to run getent passwd and see all the correct users (even with the
BDC disconnected to the network) and if I add a new user it shows up on
the BDC, but how do I know that the machines on my network are using the
BDC? How does load balancing work, are the workstations only sent to the
BDC is the PDC is "too busy"? Is there a tool available to monitor the
way the network load balances? Maybe I could use Wireshark to watch
network traffic and see the authentication requests. Just curious.

The workgroup name serves as the domain name if you are running your samba
servers as domain controlers. A BDC must have the same domain name as the PDC,
so the answer is "no".
Once you start with PDCs and BDCs you must stop thinking of workgroups. You have
a domain.

Thanks for the answer. I'm just going to keep everything on the same
domain to eliminate complexity. I suppose I could set up another subnet,
but that sounds too much like work.

Re: [Samba] samba backup domain controller

2004-11-15 Thread Paul Gienger

not possible I would use ldap as the backend, but once again there is
limited documentation.
Then perhaps you aren't looking in the right place. Try going to
www.samba.org and hit any of the links under "Learn Samba" on the left
side, the first two in particular. That should be enough doc for most
systems, and if you run into problems with one of those setups post back
with a detailed description of the problem

For multiple (server) systems, some sort of network authentication is
wise, and LDAP is the recent auth of choice for the unix/linux minded so
I would suggest that.

[Samba] samba backup domain controller

2004-11-15 Thread adrian sender
Hey all
I need some help with samba in a samba enviroment as a backup domain
controller. There seems to be a lack of good documentation.

I would prefer a pure samba envioment using the samba password file and
rsync, this is the most basic setup but there is no documentation. If not
possible I would use ldap as the backend, but once again there is limited
documentation.

Any help wuld be apprectiated.

Yes.

http://samba.org/~jht/NT4migration/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf

Chapters 4 - 8 might help you.

Can do with Samba-2.2.8a, even better with Samba-3.0.0 due out soon.

Hope it helps. If not, please do let me know what is missing from this

[Samba] backup domain controller

2003-06-03 Thread Andreas Baer

hi there,

my name is andreas,
i am working on a company as an administrator for the local network
which uses win2000-clients and unix/linux-servers in one domain.

at the moment we have only one primary domain controller, which is
the samba implementation for domain logons. samba works fine and there
are no problems in it`s use,
but the problem is that we have a "outpost" of our company in a
different city. the clients from there are also connected to the
samba-pdc which is at our location. this brings the need of a instant
internet connection to send the request for domain logons or for the
transfer of home directories for example.

now to our problem,

in one short sentence:
we want to build up one or more backup domain controller for reducing
traffic and costs for the company.

one location of a bdc would be for example this "outpost".
to solve this problem without microsoft-licences for use of domain
controllers, i searched the internet for a solution.
but it was very hard to find something about samba for use as a backup
domain controller, because this function isn`t really implemented.

my questions are for now:

   - is there a chance to get samba work as a backup domain
controller, especially for the problem i write above?

   - if yes, where can i find some really good explainations and
howto`s for the solution of this problem?

   - if no, is there a chance that the next releases of samba will
have such an implementation, maybe version 3.x.x or earlier?

   - a little help would be to explain the problem of the backup
domain controller in use with samba from the sight of a samba
 developer

we really have to find a solution for our company`s network
thanks for any reply and sorry, but my english is not the best. :)
