Actually I verified that this does in fact happen. When I first tried doing
this, I had not created the directory on the server where the profile would
be stored (I had created /data/profiles but not /data/profiles/mytestuser).
Windows XP freaked out and said it couldn't make a roaming profile and
proceeded to make a local profile based on "Default User."

Now here is where I got really confused and didn't understand what the problem
was. I jumped through all kinds of hoops getting it to copy the local
profile onto the server, etc. It never worked, even with the File and
Settings Wizard.

Finally, I got frustrated. I deleted both the user's profile on the server,
and the user's local profile that had been created based on Default User. I
left the user's original non-domain profile. Then I logged in as the user to
the domain, and damn if it didn't copy the user's profile straight to the
server just like I had expected it to do in the first place.

The moral of the story is that Windows seems to assume you are the same user
if you are logging into the local system only, or to the domain. I have no
idea what the behavior would be if you had _only_ a domain account and not a
local machine account.

Re: [Samba] Switch profile from local to roaming?

2004-10-03 Thread Hamish
You could try this:
on the local computer add an account, right click "my computer" > manage
> Local Users and Groups > rclick > add user. Put your domain in and
the user name (the user must be a domain user already) Make them a power
user.
Log off, log on as new user to domain, log off (this will make a section
for them under docs and settings.
Log on as domain admin.
Right click my computer > properties > advanced > User Profiles : Settings.
Select the old account (it will be in the format user/localmachinename)
Click "Copy To"
Go to the documents and settings dir (usually C:) and select the new
domain users dir you just made by logging on as her.
Select this dir
Click "Permitted to use: change"
Select the DOMAIN user, ie DOMAIN\User
Press OK, account is copied exactly, log off
Log on to domain as new user, log off (this copies the files to the
roaming location)

This has always worked for me, the only thing that sometimes does not
work is that their desktop background changes. I normally just tell them
to sod off if they complain, but you can get it back (it is still
selected in the display properties, just browse for the file again and
apply)

Hope that helps,

Re: [Samba] Switch profile from local to roaming?

2004-09-29 Thread Zach
Paul Geinger's idea below looks like it will work. I've found a way
that you can force windows to replace the invalid SID in NTUSER.DAT
with a valid one, whithout trying to discover what the valid SID is
(they're very long and cumbersome anyway), and still preserving all
the profile's customization.

I'll post it under the Roaming Profiles:Samba PDC:WinXP:User must be local
admin thread.

I never did try the profiles program. I've got the samba 3.0.7 rpm
installed and the profiles man page is there, but I couldn't find the
profiles binary. I'll mess around with that later.

Not sure if this is the 'approved' way to do things like this, but it
always works for me when I have to migrate a profile from one dir to
another, usually I use it when switching domains, i.e. from our 'one
domain per site' to one global domain where the sid just can't
match ANYWAY

1. Copy said user's profile to a backup location
2. Move the 'Default User' profile someplace so that it isn't in the way
3. Copy said user's old profile to Default User
4. Log in as said user, the default profile will copy to the user's
profile
5. Move real 'Default User' back
You rock dude. Never had to do this before. Didn't realize ntuser.dat
was SID locked. The above works PERFECTLY for my purposes.

Cheers
TMS III
Now there will be some things that aren't migrated but that depends a
lot on your setup and what programs you run. For the most part,
everything involving the SID that Windows knows about will be migrated
in my experience.

Re: [Samba] Switch profile from local to roaming?

2004-09-29 Thread Zach
I'm currently trying to solve a problem regarding roaming profiles in
another thread. In this case it appears the profiles weren't migrated
properly. In my case I think (it was a long time ago) I simply copied
the the profile directory up to the server with a simple drag and drop
(I didn't know better). In trying to solve the problems with a now
malformed NTUSER.DAT a google search turned this up:
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/profiles.1.html

It appears the samba developers are attempting to address this very problem.

See the thread, Roaming Profiles:Samba PDC:WinXP:User must be local
