As long as you're not using Windows 7, you can make this go away with

smb ports = 139

in your smb.conf, then restart Samba.

Look at "http://samba.org";
On the left side you find "learn Samba", with links to the "HOWTO" and
to "examples".

By the way: don't write the whole message into the headline - thank you!

Re: [Samba] hi

2008-06-19 Thread Hector Blanco
yes... I think the workgroup must be the same for all computers (you can
check that in smb.conf)

You can always open (in the windows machine) execute nbtstat -A
IP_of_the_Free_bsd_linux_machine and see if you have a response (maybe
you'll find this old mail interesting:
http://uvlug.org/pipermail/list/2005-January/000147.html)

I don't know if it has changed in newer samba versions, but to connect from
windows you had to encrypt passwords too (in smb.conf)

[Samba] Hi, I was hoping someone can help me with this: I can mount a share using smbclient, then change to a hidden directory cd /my/home/directory and access the files

2007-08-31 Thread Jason Friedman
Hi, I was hoping someone can help me with this:

I can mount a share using smbclient, then change to a

cd /my/home/directory

The root directory of the share is unreadable (NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED) but
I
can nevertheless change to this directory (which I have permission for) and
access the files.

When I try to do the same things using mount (with either smbfs or cifs), it
mounts, again
is unwilling to list the root directory, but also will not list or change to
my directory:

bash: cd /my/home/directory: permission denied

I am running version 3.0.24 on Ubuntu. I don't have access to the settings
of the Windows server.

Thanks in advance,

Jason

 Hi

I want to use samba as a fileserver. I am running in a windows 2000

Will samba work in this environment or do I need to change my AD to support
pre windows 2000 clients.

[Samba] Hi again timur

2004-05-18 Thread Tom Skeren
I am completely frustrated at this point. The following is not meant
against you personally, but I'm the ONLY I.T. person for 100 users in 6
different offices, and I don't know what to do at this point but beg.

I finally figured out what Heimdal is, and I believe is the main
problem. Installed 5.2.1 on a machine. Installed krb5 from ports.
Changed make.conf adding KRB5_HOME=/usr/local. Rebooted. Got the
newest port for samba-devel. Did make, make depends, make install. Try
"net ads testjoin". Machine responds "ADS support not compiled in".
Either I get it compiled in but net ads join/testjoin always error out
because of some incompatibility in Heimdal Kerberos, or this happens. I
really am getting up against a wall here. I've gotta get this thing
working. It took me three hours to do this on a Redhat machine. I've
been trying to do the same thing in FreeBSD for three weeks straight.
I really don't want to rebuild all of my servers with Redhat, I don't
know Redhat very well at all, and that means replacing 4 production
servers. I could really use a bit of help.

Re: [Samba] HI

2003-06-03 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
This is not possible. If you have write access to a file, then you're allowed to
delete it. Unless you don't have write access to the directory where this file is in.
In this case you can write to a file, but don't delete it or rename it.

There was a discussion in this list about this a month ago or so (can't find the mail).

To All,

Just to let you know the solution to the problem I was having!

I feel very silly now, looks like it was a problem with my smb.conf domain
admin group. I have just added root to it and promoted a machine using root
instead of my super user and it works.

Oh well, you live you learn.

Frank et al thanks for your help. :o)

Ok. Next step is to get more info about this part. Run your samba
server with higher debug level and take a look in the smbd.log of the samba
maschine.

Yes, this is part of the process in the Samba Project Documentation, I am
using the Samba HOWTO Collection for this solution / problem.

I have tried both manual creation of the machine accounts and the
"on-the-fly" methods.

If you don't what "machine accounts" are, please read

[Samba] Hi!

2002-11-20 Thread Michael Sage
A brief introduction on me before I start on the problem!

I am a sys admin working in the UK, I have administrated and set-up windows
networks, Novell networks and administrated Linux Networks before.

I have used Samba on a 9x network before very successfully, I now work for a
'proper' company and they use 2k Pro and XP Pro on the network as well as
9x.

I am trying to use Samba as a PDC, there are no Windows Servers on the
network
so it should be ok, I have follows the Samba Project Documentation to the
letter (at least once), my 9x clients can log in with encrypted passwords so
everything is
fine. However I cannot 'promote' an NTx box (i.e Win 2k Pro, XP Pro) in the
domain, I get the following error: "The remote procedure call failed". I am
using version 2.2.6.

Any ideas??? :o?

Thanks

Hi, I´m an university student of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria ( Canary Islands,
Spain). I apply to you because I´m begining to develop my last project, I´m at
the end of my Computer Engenieer career. What I try in this project is to
extend the PHP language with a library that it conects to a SAMBA server and
makes the functions that alows us the SMBCLIENT on the actually systems. The
actually developments that I could see (including SAMBA2WWW) are developed
making use of the function “system” that includes the majority of the
languages to make calls to own operative system functions. My idea is to try
don´t use this function and use others mechanisms to obtein that those who use
them could do it quietest it´s a segurity question. And also of trying that a
language so extended as the PHP is evident that have a function library to the
conexions with SAMBA servers. Well what I´d like is that if you can and with
all the experience that I suppose that you have, you would indicate me if it´s
possible to do my project and would send me all the information that you think
it could de useful any way. First of all thank you and I hope to recieve your
news as soon as possible.

If you want to check what packages you ahve installed, you can use rpm :

rpm -qa

This will query the RPM database and show you everything

obviously your not that interested in everything, so you want to filter out some sort
of search pattern, in this case "samba". grep is a pattern matching
program, so in the UNIX tradition, you can piece different programs together
to get the result you want :

rpm -qa | grep samba

If this returns something like "samba-2.2.0a-0" then you have samba installed!
If not, use YaST2 to install the samba packages.

Check out the man pages used here, with "man rpm" "man grep" and "man samba".

As regards to setting up your network read :

http://samba.mirror.ac.uk/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.html

Make backups of the original files before you alter them incase you mess-up totally,
have a go at configuring yourself, and if you can't ask again here.

Hope thats enough information for you to be getting on with.

Re: [Samba] hi!! samba team

2002-05-10 Thread Joel Hammer

To connect to a windows server:

smbclient -L //server/share

Are you using linux? The command to mount a directory in linux looks
something like this in linux:
smbmount //$i/"$n" /mnt/NetWork/$i/"$n" -o uid=username,gid=users,guest,rw,fmask=777
Where:
i=server
n=share name
/mnt/Network is your mounting directory.
YMMV.
