I ask these questions because a few weeks ago I was trying this out I
had similar problems but after cleaning the share out and rebooting XP
it worked for me.

There should be one for your samba share as well. I have a dfs tab in
XP for my samba shares with dfs root enabled.

That is the same for me.

While I did create various files/directories during testing, on my initial
test only the following link existed:

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 35 Mar 10 16:26 henson ->
msdfs:zfs1.unx.csupomona.edu\henson

I also cleaned up the remnants of my testing, leaving only the above link
again, and tried again from a fresh client, with the same failure.

If I pull up an actual Windows 2003 server running Dfs, and right-click on
the share, there is a DFS tab. Pulling up the samba server, there is no
such tab on the share properties. Also, the Windows server is identified as
"Windows Server", whereas the samba server is identified as "Windows NT 4.9
Server"; I'm not sure if that makes a difference...

Thanks...

One other question. Does the path /var/lib/samba/shares/user have any
files other then the dfs links?

The linux server never existed as a non-dfs root, and the client had never
connected to it before. However, on general principle (being Windows) I
rebooted it anyway with no change. I also attempted to access it from my
notebook computer, which hadn't even been turned on since before the linux
server was built, with the same failure result.

As far as I can tell from my research, it just seems that there are some
fair number of variables that determine whether or not a Windows client
will consider a share a DFS root, and evidently I'm missing one of them
8-/.

Thanks...

Did you reboot the XP box after setting the dfs link up on the linux server?

I still haven't been able to figure this out; and haven't seen any
responses to my inquiry. One of my colleagues wanted to host the Dfs root
on an actual Windows server, which seems to work fine. I was hoping to keep
an all Samba solution, but I guess I will have to let him have his way.

Clearly samba Dfs root support works for some people; it is rather
frustrating that it's not working here for no apparent reason.
