RE: [Samba] Printing Problem with Samba ' Failed to allocate a print job'
FYI, rebooting did not fix this problem either. If anybody has any suggestions I would appreciate it. I'm almost at the point of renaming the printer to see if that helps (it shouldn't but who knows). RE: [Samba] Printing problem with Win XP SP2
Hi, good day to you 2. Im running Debian Sarge also, en use the same printer setup as you do. I have Windows XP SP2 (dutch) with about 20 printers , 18 HP Laserjet en 1 epson Laserjet, 1 matrix printer. I also have uploaded the windows drivers "AS Administrator" ( i use ldap backend, and Administrator has al of the SE Rights. ) So this way drivers are uploaded with Administrator:Domain Admins rights en set to 775. I install the printer by point en print, through a kix login script. This works perfectly. I understand that the printer drivers are uploaded to the workstation, but only printing is a problem. check this first. 1 where is the spooler path, and had cups / printer user rights to write to it. ( i this this is the problem ) 2 are you able to print if your user root ( or administrator ) 3) how is cups setup, you MUST set the cups spooler to RAW Printing. For everybody i'll make a nice howto for this setup im running. i'll post is very soon. RE: [Samba] printing problem from Windows 98 - samba 3.0.1
Hi, I have added print$ share so workstation can download adobeps4.drv and related files directly. But when i configure printer on Win98 workstation and go to the properties applet of that printer, i get rundll32 (msgsrv) error related to adobeps4.drv. The same thing works perfectly with Win2k/WinXp clients with cupsdrvr.dll and stuff. I have added _all_ driver files through cupsaddsmb which copies all the files to print$ share for Win2k/XP and Win98/ME. - Rajesh --- "Sharp, Clint" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > 2000/XP and Win 98/ME use different printer drivers. > Have you installed > drivers for Win98/ME to your print$ share as well? > > Clint __ Do you Yahoo!? Re: [Samba] Printing Problem
I don't know an exact solution, but things to try until you fall over the answer would include: 1. Put the exact commands into your printer share, rather than hoping everything is working right. For example: [Photo] comment = Print Photos path = /tmp read only = No create mask = 0700 guest ok = yes hosts allow = 192.168. printable = Yes printing = lprng print command = echo %J %p %s >> /tmp/junkJ;\ a="`echo '%J' | sed "s/^.*- //"`" ;\ echo This is truncated $a >> /tmp/junkJ;\ /usr/bin/lpr -PPhoto -J"$a" %s;\ rm %s lpq command = /usr/bin/lpq -PPhoto lprm command = /usr/bin/lprm -PPhoto %j lppause command = /usr/sbin/lpc hold Photo %j lpresume command = /usr/sbin/lpc release Photo %j use client driver = yes This works for XP home clients as well as windows 95/98 clients. 2. If you are using lprng, look at lpd.perms for restrictions (good luck). You could put DEFAULT ACCEPT as the only line in that file. Other printing systems may have their own configuration files which restrict access to the queue. 3. Read the samba logs. Maybe you will see which command is failing and why. Re: [Samba] Printing problem
Well, all users are printing now. Thanks Joel for pointing out that a home directory 'files1/test' was being added for each user except user1. I had only one reerence to files1/test in my conf file so I commented it out and restarted the daemon. Checked the client log file again only to find out that the same thing was occuring. My next step was to get rid of the /files1/test directory. Having done this I restarted the daemon and lo and behold we are printing. Thanks again Joel. I am really stumped as to why this was happening because there was a Homes share defined which was supposed to be files1/%g/%U. This was being displayed in Windows Explorer as the home directory...not /files1/test...h any thoughts? Joel. I am not sure why your email did not get through. Please try again copying to [EMAIL PROTECTED] This will allow me to follow up on our end if it does not get through to my regular address. Re: [Samba] Printing problem
Please see my other post for commments about your logs. I can't write you directly because your mail server rejects my mail server (I run sendmail on my linux box), so I have to talk to you only via the samba list. It might be nice not to send logs in word format. They are a bit of a nuisance to reformat to plain text. They are also 4x as big. Save the planet. Conserve bandwidth! Geez. Sheltered mail servers. Word documents. What have I gotten myself into? Joel On Thu, Jan 16, 2003 at 02:19:09PM -0500, daulton theodore wrote: > Joel. Re: [Samba] Printing problem
Well, this may not seem like much, but, I looked at your logs. The smblogs looked identical. The client logs had only these differences. param/loadparm.c:lp_add_home(1890) adding home directory user2 at /files1/test smbd/service.c:make_connection(610) simplewkstn (134.117.10.119) connect to service IPC$ as user nobody (uid=60001, gid=60001) (pid 13042) smbd/service.c:make_connection(610) simplewkstn (134.117.10.119) connect to service IPC$ as user user2 (uid=1548, gid=3000) (pid 12970) The first and last line come from user2's log. What this means is that user2 and user1 are not being treated identically by samba. So, find out why user2 adds a home directory and user1 doesn't, and find out why user1 is treated as nobody when he logs onto the IPC$ (whatever that is) and user2 is logged on as user2. Glad to have helped. I would say when I first began fooling with linux, about 1/3 of all my problems were due to permissions. After two or three or four years, about 1/3 of all my problems are due to permissions, only now I assume any problem is a permissions problem and check them out first! Joel, You were right, it was a permission problem (I didn't realized that neither of my users but root could print to that printer). It took me a while to figure out the problem but I traced it to the jetadmin of HP. The printer were create with the old jetadmin tool and aparently it doesn't work on Solaris (I couldn't figured out why it works only for root). I removed the printer and recreated it using the new webadmin provided by HP and it worked. Thanks for your help. -Oscar PS. Daulton, hope it helps you too. Re: [Samba] Printing Problem
A standard place to look for problems is in /etc/lpd.perms. I have one line in mine: DEFAULT ACCEPT Also, do you have the appropriate printer commands in your printer share? They may not be needed but, why just hope for the best? Re: [Samba] Printing problem
My comments may relate only to my printing software, lprng. That printing share looks mighty suspect. [printers] is a special share name. I forget what it does exactly, but it lets you load all your printers in /etc/printcap with just one share definition, or some such (better read about THAT.) You need to have a share just for your printer just for windows clients. Here is what one of mine looks like: [lp] comment = Raw Printer for Z53 # max print jobs = 1 path = /tmp create mask = 0700 guest ok = yes hosts allow = 192.168. printable = Yes printing = lprng # print command = echo "Tried to print %s" > /SPOOL/junk.%s print command = echo %J %p %s >> /tmp/junkJ;\ a="`echo '%J' | sed "s/^.*- //"`" ;\ echo This is truncated $a >> /tmp/junkJ;\ /usr/bin/lpr -Plp -J"$a" %s;\ rm %s lpq command = /usr/bin/lpq -Plp lprm command = /usr/bin/lprm -Plp %j lppause command = /usr/sbin/lpc hold -Plp %j lpresume command = /usr/sbin/lpc release -Plp %j printer name = lp share modes = No I don't load the drivers from my server. This printer (lp) definition will not be the same as the one used for local printing because this printer queue (lp, as invoked with the lpr command) has no print filter referenced in /etc/printcap, since windows filters its own jobs. Printing with samba is simple if you keep just two things in mind. 1. The windows clients transfers the job to the spool directory specified in the share. 2. samba invokes the print command to print that job. Some other points to keep in mind: %p and %s refer to the printer name and the job name, respectively. %J refers to the banner page name, which defaults to the file name from the windows client. This is very handy. You display the banner page name in the printer queue with the -J parameter with the lpr command. The other thing to know about is /etc/lpd.perms. If you suspect that is your problem, and who wouldn't after trying to read the documentation for that thing (if you ever want to write a GUI for a configuration file, consider that one) just put one line into it: DEFAULT ACCEPT This will let any client manipulate the printing queue, which may be good, bad, or indifferent, depending on your network setup. One more trick. If you can't get the printer drivers for your printer working right in windows, and this can be a problem, set up your printer share to point to a printer queue which can handle postscript files, which should be most printer queues in linux. Then, on the windows client side, set up the printer with a generic postscript printer, HP laserjet III plus or some such seems to work fine. This approach has solved all my printing problems with windows clients. This sounds like the print job was transferred, yes? Re: [Samba] Printing problem with Samba, XP, and Xerox Printer
Hi again. One question: Can the other machines print to that printer? Which machine is the Xerox connected to? I think this is a strange problem if other PC's can print to the printer. Can the XP print to the others printers? As a first aid trying to work around the problem, you could create a share in smb.conf only for the Xerox printer and use the same settings as for the printers share, except for the print command line. Which I would use this: print command = lpr LPx:| \\clent Pc with the printer\sharename(IE Xerox) -o raw %s;rm %s -r LPx is the port on the win PC locally connected to the xerox printer. You must replace x with the portnumber used. Look at the printer properties. It might well be a fault in your princap file, but if so, none of the clients could print to the Xerox. --- Kevin Bramblett <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> skrev: > I'm sorry, I do not understand how to set the > absolute path to the printer. > I am fairly new to linux and samba. Re: [Samba] Printing problem with Samba, XP, and Xerox Printer
I'm sorry, I do not understand how to set the absolute path to the printer. I am fairly new to linux and samba. Here is the section of my smb.conf file that handles the printers: [printers] comment = All Printers path = /usr/spool/samba browseable = yes print command = lpr -b -r -h -P%p %s writeable = no printable = yes valid users = @TUMS+"DOMAIN USERS" @TUMS+"DOMAIN WEBUSERS" I have used the printconf to setup the printers in my printcap file and all printers use this setting. I am having problems only with XP as it relates to this one Xerox DC440 printer. I can print to HP Laserjet 4 and Color printers without this problem. I appreciate the helpful comment and hope you will explain further with an example. My Samba book does not give an example for the -P%p for absolute path. Re: [Samba] Printing problem - Spooled files won't print
Which printing system are you using? Have you looked at the printing logs on the server for clues? Have you considered putting the nawk script into the print filter of the queue and using a simpler print command in samba? Shouldn't there be some reference in the samba logs to calling nawk? Is this a problem for all your samba related printing, or just this one queue? Have you run testparm? Re: [Samba] Printing problem - Spooled files won't print
Is there a reason you don't use the simpler command in your smb.conf? Could this be a permissions problem? (nawk won't work for your smb user). What do you see in your smb logs? I forget my nawk, but, it seems that nawk is just deleting any extraneous lines in your postscript print files. Is that necessary?
