I also have a very similar, but perhaps not identical problem. The samba
server is on SuSE 9.3 (but the same thing has happened on all SuSEes since
7.0).
I have one printer, viz hp psc950 and four DOS boxes in the net.
1 Windows 98
2 Windows 2000
3 Windows XP (home)
4 Windows XP (professional)

With the exception of 2, all boxes print almost immediately. But the Windows
2000 takes up to 30 min (minutes not seconds) to print ten pages of a simple
Word document. Starting to print the first page can take up to 3 minutes.

Needless to say, all boxes are configured in a very similar way.

The Windows print cache is timestamp based. The client
spooler gets in a loop where it continually asks the
server for the timestamp (ChangeID) on a given printer.
In spite of the fact that the timestamp has been incremented
by some change to the printer, the client never updates
its local cache of printer data. And so it continually
thinks it is out of date.

I'm afraid this is not enough:

I have an XP machine with two users
(domain logon, roaming profile, both
have administrator privileges on the pc).

User no. 2:

1. regedit, remove the values above.
2. exit regedit, log out&in
3. check regedit, no printers appear in
   DevModePerUser or DevModes2
4. start a program that uses a printer,
   access is fine. Exit program.
5. start regedit, no printers appear in
   DevModePerUser or DevModes2

User no. 1

1. regedit, remove the values above.
2. exit regedit, log out&in
3. check regedit, no printers appear in
   DevModePerUser or DevModes2
4. start a program that uses a printer,
   access is slow. Exit program.
5. start regedit, the default printer appears
   in DevModePerUser

Why this difference between users?

This is an XP client bug. It has been covered before in the

from the HCU portion of the registry on the client machine.
Also check network traffic and I expect that you will see

Also, the issues described in
http://www.24help.info/t310486-samba-xp-bug-client-spooler-loop-ms-kb-329234.html
seem to still me lurking around. As you put it,

"Some old bugs never die I guess.
cheers, jerry"

This one still has some life left in it... The KB article describes the
following:

"When a client opens several network printers that are all on a *single*
server and then selects printer properties and preferences on *all these
printers at the same time*, the spooler on the client side may not respond
as expected. Additionally, the CPU-utilization of the print server may
increase and remain high. In this scenario, a network capture shows that the
client repeatedly queries the print server for printer properties.

A network capture displays the following remote procedure call (RPC) request
from the client:

MSRPC: c/o RPC Request: call 0x3845 opnum 0x8 context 0x0 hint 0x734"
In our case now, the new xp service packs have been installed that were
designed to remedy this. I dunno, something is still nuts. I get thousands
of packets generated trying to access the printers. It seems to be some kind
of loop. Here are the ethereal summary packet lines for 50 packets. Notice
the SMB-DCERPC-TCP-TCP-TCP loop:

thanks for mentioning this - my daughter uses my XP system all the time
while I only have been using it as a lab to test networking things,
software things etc. and lately to use iTunes to rip stuff to my new
iPod. She has been complaining about the length of time it takes to get
a print dialog and when I saw this post, I knew it had to be the issue
and apparently it was just the thing.

Thanks

No idea. I saw a mention of it being "fixed" in SP2. But
obviously it's not. There's a pre-sp2 hotfix I've seen.
But nothing post SP2. It could be triggered by certain
