RE: [Samba] Printing Problem with Samba ' Failed to allocate a print job'

2008-04-09 Thread Misty Stanley-Jones
FYI, rebooting did not fix this problem either. If anybody has any suggestions
I would appreciate it. I'm almost at the point of renaming the printer to see
if that helps (it shouldn't but who knows).

Hi Bill,

That would be fabulous (in a bad way) but it is not the case. Here is the
equivalent part of dumpe2fs for /dev/sda1 (/data):
Inode count:  183156736
Block count:  366286008
Reserved block count: 18314300
Free blocks:  287497221
Free inodes:  181068686

And here is for /dev/sdf1 (/):
Inode count:  14057472
Block count:  28103701
Reserved block count: 1405185
Free blocks:  17311944
Free inodes:  13849218

Any other ideas would be appreciated!

This will sound stupid, I am certain, but is this an inode issue? Does the FS
type you are using auto-extend (like JFS2 on AIX) the number of available
inodes? Or fragmentation perhaps?

I only ask since you clearly have enough space, but a lack of inode may appear
as no space left on device and a high level of fragmentation in JFS (not jfs2)
on AIX will throw strange errors.

Cheers,
Bill

(PS: I know you are not running AIX. :-) :-) )

Possible reasons:
1) The driver wants to do some initialization which fails. So: which driver?
2) Your might be using and old and buggy samba version.
3) You have no W32X86 directory in your driver directory
4) You printer admin authentication fails for some reason
...

The first thing I'll allways suggest is to call
Start-Run from your windows menu and enter
\\your samba server\print$.
Change into the W32X86 directory and try to create a file or folder.
If this fails, you have an authentication or unix rights issue.
Otherwise you'll have to go further with more details.

The error message seems to be saying that you have no space left on the

Hi everybody,

when a i have to install a new printer driver i do the
following:

1 - install the printer driver on a windows machine
2 - share the printer on windows machine
3 - use smbclient to connect to windows printer share
and download the printer files drivers
4 - use rpcclient to connect to windows printer share
to see what files are needed to register the printer
driver correctly
5 - use rpcclient to register the files of printer

RE: [Samba] Printing problem with Win XP SP2

2005-07-19 Thread Louis van Belle
Hi, good day to you 2.

Im running Debian Sarge also, en use the same printer setup as you do.
I have Windows XP SP2 (dutch) with about 20 printers , 18 HP Laserjet en 1
epson Laserjet, 1 matrix printer.
I also have uploaded the windows drivers AS Administrator ( i use ldap
backend, and Administrator has al of the SE Rights. )
So this way drivers are uploaded with Administrator:Domain Admins rights en
set to 775.

I install the printer by point en print, through a kix login script. This
works perfectly.
I understand that the printer drivers are uploaded to the workstation, but
only printing
is a problem.

check this first.
1 where is the spooler path, and had cups / printer user rights to write to
it.
( i this this is the problem )
2 are you able to print if your user root ( or administrator )

3) how is cups setup, you MUST set the cups spooler to RAW Printing.

For everybody i'll make a nice howto for this setup im running.
i'll post is very soon.

 Hi List,

   (PS: I am not signed to list, please CC a mail to

I am using samba 3.0.1 as a primary domain
 controller with LDAP. I am able to do file sharing
 very well with user wise restriction. The problem is
 with printer.
I have a HP1200 printer for which i have to do JOB
 accounting. All the jobs will be queued through samba. I have
 done setup so that the machine (named
 printserver) to which printer is attached doesn't
 allow other machines to directly print, it allows only
 samba (named pragatee) machine to print. So all the
 workstations will queue their print jobs to samba.
Now when a workstation joins samba domain, they can
 share files. I have added print$ share so workstation
 can download adobeps4.drv and related files directly.
 But when i configure printer on Win98 workstation and
 go to the properties applet of that printer, i get
 rundll32 error related to adobeps4.drv. The same thing
 works perfectly with Win2k/WinXp clients with
 cupsdrvr.dll and stuff.
Has anyone faced this kind of problem before? This
 problem has been listed in threads, but no replies
 were given. If anyone wants to see complete error log,
 i will mail that. Sorry for such a huge mail. I am
 scratching my head for last 2 days. :-(

   Error log is as following :

Re: [Samba] Printing problem

2003-01-17 Thread Joel Hammer
Well, this may not seem like much, but, I looked at your logs. The smblogs
looked identical. The client logs had only these differences.

param/loadparm.c:lp_add_home(1890) adding home directory user2 at /files1/test
 smbd/service.c:make_connection(610) simplewkstn (134.117.10.119) connect to service
IPC$ as user nobody (uid=60001, gid=60001) (pid 13042)
 smbd/service.c:make_connection(610) simplewkstn (134.117.10.119) connect to service
IPC$ as user user2 (uid=1548, gid=3000) (pid 12970)

The first and last line come from user2's log. What this means is that
user2 and user1 are not being treated identically by samba.
So, find out why user2 adds a home directory and user1 doesn't, and find out
why user1 is treated as nobody when he logs onto the IPC$ (whatever that is)
and user2 is logged on as user2.

Please see my other post for commments about your logs.

I can't write you directly because your mail server rejects my mail
server (I run sendmail on my linux box), so I have to talk to you only via
the samba list.

It might be nice not to send logs in word format. They are a bit of a
nuisance to reformat to plain text. They are also 4x as big. Save the
planet. Conserve bandwidth!

Geez. Sheltered mail servers. Word documents. What have I gotten myself

Re: [Samba] printing problem

2003-01-06 Thread Oscar Lovera

Joel,
You were right, it was a permission problem (I didn't realized that neither
of my users but root could print to
that printer). It took me a while to figure out the problem but I traced
it to the jetadmin of HP. The printer
were create with the old jetadmin tool and aparently it doesn't work on Solaris
(I couldn't figured out why
it works only for root).
 I removed the printer and recreated it using the new webadmin provided
by HP and it worked.

Thanks for your help.

-Oscar

PS. Daulton, hope it helps you too.

A standard place to look for problems is in /etc/lpd.perms.
I have one line in mine:

Also, do you have the appropriate printer commands in your printer share?
They may not be needed but, why just hope for the best?

Re: [Samba] Printing problem with Samba, XP, and Xerox Printer

2002-09-24 Thread Kevin Bramblett

I'm sorry, I do not understand how to set the absolute path to the printer.
I am fairly new to linux and samba. Here is the section of my smb.conf file
that handles the printers:

[printers]
 comment = All Printers
 path = /usr/spool/samba
 browseable = yes
 print command = lpr -b -r -h -P%p %s
 writeable = no
 printable = yes
 valid users = @TUMS+DOMAIN USERS @TUMS+DOMAIN WEBUSERS

I have used the printconf to setup the printers in my printcap file and all
printers use this setting. I am having problems only with XP as it relates
to this one Xerox DC440 printer. I can print to HP Laserjet 4 and Color
printers without this problem.

I appreciate the helpful comment and hope you will explain further with an
example. My Samba book does not give an example for the -P%p for absolute
path.

Thanks again,

Re: [Samba] Printing problem with Samba, XP, and Xerox Printer

2002-09-24 Thread linux power

Hi again.
One question: Can the other machines print to that
printer?
Which machine is the Xerox connected to?
I think this is a strange problem if other PC's can
print to the printer. Can the XP print to the others
printers?
As a first aid trying to work around the problem, you
could create a share in smb.conf only for the Xerox
printer and use the same settings as for the printers
share, except for the print command line.
Which I would use this:
print command = lpr LPx:| \\clent Pc with the
printer\sharename(IE Xerox) -o raw %s;rm %s -r

LPx is the port on the win PC locally connected to the
xerox printer.You must replace x with the portnumber
used. Look at the printer properties.
It might well be a fault in your princap file, but if
so, none of the clients could print to the Xerox.

 Is there a reason you don't use the simpler command in your smb.conf?
 Could this be a permissions problem? (nawk won't work for your smb user).
 What do you see in your smb logs?
 I forget my nawk, but, it seems that nawk is just deleting any extraneous

Which printing system are you using?
Have you looked at the printing logs on the server for clues?
Have you considered putting the nawk script into the print filter of the
queue and using a simpler print command in samba?
Shouldn't there be some reference in the samba logs to calling nawk?
Is this a problem for all your samba related printing, or just this one
queue?
Have you run testparm?

 (Minolta PagePro 6).

 From the client side, everything works as it is supposed to, and when I check
 in the selected spool directory for Samba printers, I find the spooled printouts:

 solarisbox-1:[/var/spool/samba]# ls -l
 total 176
 -rwxr--r--   1 sambaother  28851 Sep 19 03:23 SAMBA.2Wa40i
 -rwxr--r--   1 sambaother  60073 Sep 19 03:22 SAMBA.9HayZi
 solarisbox-1:[/var/spool/samba]#

 I can print the files manually using the command

 /usr/bin/lp -c -o nobanner -T postscript -d pagepro6 SAMBA.2Wa40i

 or, as I have found somewhere (this is in my smb.conf)
 /usr/bin/nawk '/^%!PS/, /^%%EOF/' SAMBA.2Wa40i | /usr/bin/lp -c -o nobanner -T
postscript -d pagepro6

 .. the only problem is that it seems like the print command is never executed
 once a print request arrives.

 The complete contents of my smb.conf (that has to do with printing) follows:

 [global]
 debug level = 2
 ...
 log file=/var/log/samba.%m
 ...
 printing = bsd
 printcap name = /etc/printers.conf
 load printers = yes
 ...
 ...disk shares...
 [printers]
 comment = All printers
 path = /var/spool/samba
 browseable = no
 printable = yes
 public = yes
 writable = no
 create mode = 0700
 [pagepro6]
 path = /var/spool/samba
 printer name = pagepro6
 writable = yes
 public = yes
 printable = yes
 print command = /usr/bin/nawk '/^%!PS/, /^%%EOF/' %s | /usr/bin/lp -c -o
nobanner -T postscript -d %p; rm -f %s

 Any suggestion besides sett ing up a cron job to print everything in
 the spool directory every minute or so, but this isn't the optimal
 solution to the problem ?
