problems installing

2002-04-08 Thread Jerry Cain

Have RH7.1 and am trying to install Samba 2.2.2. After much trouble with
conflicting files, I finally got it to install. However, when I try to run
it, I receive the following error message:

auth: command not found
auth: command not found
account: command not found
session: command not found
password: command not found

I found the samba script in /etc/pam.d, not in /etc/samba where I'd expect
it. Also, it sure seems strange that everything in the pam.d directory is:
 -rw-r--r-- (what's up with that?).

Obviously, I chmod'ed samba and that's when I had the problems I listed
above.

RH6.2 was so easy; just rpm -i , configure smb.conf, then samba
start. Why does RH7.1 have to be so difficult?

I would sure appreciate any words of wisdom...

Jerry

p.s. please pardon my duplicate posting of this message in another list. I'm
not familiar with how lists work nor what etiquette to employ.

Is there not a package at sunfreeware.com?
Shiresh @ veritas normally builds the solaris
packages for us and for some reason he hasn't
had a chance to get around to it.

We only build one RPM for all samba binaries and files. RedHat and other
Linux distros normally break it up. I would recommend checking with yoru
vendor.

Or you can remove all installed Samba RPMS and then install
samba-2.2.3a-20020206.i386.rpm

2.2.6 final release just aorund the corner (hopefully)

2002-10-10 Thread Gerald (Jerry) Carter

As you probably know, 2.2.6rc2 was released yesterday.
If all goes well (i'm a positive thinker), this will be a short
RC period. Of course, being a software person has made me
a little cynical. :-\ So who knows?

I will accept doc updates and packaging updates only during the
RC testing (unless of course you have a serious bug fixand if
you do be prepared to explain why you have already submitted the
report or fix). :-)

We'll let RC2 simmer for a week probably, so if it is a quiet
testing period, look for 2.2.6 on next Friday.

Heads up everyone,

After a long wait (4 months since 2.2.5 and numerous bug fixes
later), the final planned 2.2 release is here. With this release
Samba 2.2 is now officially in maintenance mode only. The only
fixes that will be accepted to the SAMBA_2_2 cvs branch are those
which fix critical bugs in basic functionality. It's time to move
on to Samba 3.0.

Please refer to the complete release notes here

  http://www.samba.org/samba/whatsnew/samba-2.2.6.html

This is the latest stable release of Samba and is the
version that all production Samba servers should be running
for all current bug-fixes.

The source code can be downloaded from :

  http://download.samba.org/samba/ftp/

in the file samba-2.2.6.tar.gz or samba-2.2.6.tar.bz2.
Both archives have been signed as well using the Samba Distribution

as the source tarballs)

Binary packages will be released shortly for major platforms and
can be found at

I know this has come up before. I thought that we correctly detected the
GNU loader. It looks like the configure script is using the GNU ld but
the actual compilation process is using SUN's ld. ANy idea why this

WHATS NEW IN Samba 3.0 alpha23
  30th March 2003
  ==

This is a pre-release of Samba 3.0. This is NOT a stable release.
Use at your own risk.

The purpose of this alpha release is to get wider testing of the
major new pieces of code in the current Samba 3.0 development tree.
We have officially ceased development on the 2.2.x release of Samba
and are concentrating on Samba 3.0. To reduce the time before the
final Samba 3.0 release we need as many people as possible to start
testing these alpha releases, and hopefully giving us some high
quality feedback on what needs fixing.

Note that Samba 3.0 is not feature complete yet. There is a more
coding we have planned, but unless we get what we have done already
more widely tested we will have a hard time doing a stable release
in a reasonable time frame.

Major new features:
- ---

- - Active Directory support. This release is able to join a ADS realm
as a member server and authenticate users using LDAP/kerberos.

- - Unicode support. Samba will now negotiate UNICODE on the wire and
internally there is now a much better infrastructure for multi-byte
  and UNICODE character sets.

- - New authentication system. The internal authentication system has
been almost completely rewritten. Most of the changes are internal,
but the new auth system is also very configurable.

- - new filename mangling system. The filename mangling system has been
completely rewritten. An internal database now stores mangling maps
persistently. This needs lots of testing.

- - new "net" command. A new "net" command has been added. It is
somewhat similar to the "net" command in windows. Eventually we plan
to replace a bunch of other utilities (such as smbpasswd) with
subcommands in "net", at the moment only a few things are
  implemented.

- - Samba now negotiates NT-style status32 codes on the wire. This
  improves error handling a lot.

- - better w2k printing support including publishing printer
  attributes in active directory

- - new loadable RPC modules

- - new dual-daemon winbindd support for better performance

- - support for migrating from a Windows NT 4.0 domain

- - support for establishing trust relationships with Windows NT
  4.0 domain controllers

Plus lots of other changes!

Changes in alpha23:
- ---

  LDAP Group Mapping
  --

pdbedit -i -e sets all SAM_ACCOUNT elements to CHANGED to
satisfy the new pdb_ldap.c handling. pdbedit -g transfers group
mappings. I made this separate from the user database, as current
installations have to live with a split backend. So, if you are
running 3_0 alphas with LDAP as a backend and upgrade to 3.0alpha23,
  you must call

root# pdbedit -i tdbsam -e ldapsam -g

to transfer your group mapping database to LDAP.

All groups must be represented as posixGroup objects in
the directory and you must adapt your LDAP schema to support the
sambaGroupMapping before running this command. Refer to
examples/LDAP/samba.schema for details on the objectclass.

  Parameters
  --

Modified Parameters (see smb.conf(5) for details):

  * passdb backend

  Added Parameters

  * ldap del only sam attr
  * ldap delete dn

  ChangeLog
  -

See cvs log for SAMBA_3_0 for complete details. There are many
smaller numerous changes that would clutter the release notes.

I think you just need to backup you config files and remove the current
samba package before trying to install the 2.2.8 package.

The Samba Team is proud to announce the availability of the
third (and possible last) beta release of the Samba 3.0.0
code base. While we are significantly closer to the final
release, you should be reminded that this is a non-production
release provided for testing only. If all goes well, we will
move onto a series of Release Candidate (RC) snapshots next.

There have been significant additions to winbindd's
functionality in the release as well as changes to Samba's

very close to RC3

Just to give everyone a heads up,

I think we are very close to RC3. The main problem to straighten
out is some of the NTLMv2 default settings. Hopefully on Monday
we'll be ready to do. Depends on how much gets done tomorrow and
through the weekend.

I'm really hoping that this will be the last RC and that after
a week we can rename it as 3.0.0. There are obviously still
quite a few open bugs and people will continue to work on these
in the SAMBA_3_0 tree after the RC3 snapshot. The question
will be if any are serious enough to merge into RC3.

This also means that we'll probably do a 3.0.1pre1 (including more bug
fixes) 24 to 48 hours after the 3.0.0 release :-)

As an aside, we've gotten a lot of good feedback through the beta
releases and this has significantly increased in the RC series.
Thanks to everyone for their efforts (although a lot of people are
probably just one the general samba ml).

The first stable release of Samba 3.0 is available

2003-09-24 Thread Gerald (Jerry) Carter
[ and there was great rejoicing among the masses! And a
tiny voice squeeked, "See, I told you they would get
it out before the Linux 2.6 kernel" ]
The Samba Team is proud to announce the availability of the
first official release of the Samba 3.0 code base.
Major new features:
---
1) Active Directory support. Samba 3.0 is now able to
join a ADS realm as a member server and authenticate
users using LDAP/Kerberos.
2) Unicode support. Samba will now negotiate UNICODE on the wire
and internally there is now a much better infrastructure for
multi-byte and UNICODE character sets.
3) New authentication system. The internal authentication system
has been almost completely rewritten. Most of the changes are
internal, but the new auth system is also very configurable.
4) New default filename mangling system.

5) A new "net" command has been added. It is somewhat similar to
the "net" command in windows. Eventually we plan to replace
numerous other utilities (such as smbpasswd) with subcommands
in "net".
6) Samba now negotiates NT-style status32 codes on the wire. This
improves error handling a lot.
7) Better Windows 2000/XP/2003 printing support including publishing
printer attributes in active directory.
8) New loadable module support for passdb backends and character
sets.
9) New default dual-daemon winbindd support for better performance.

10) Support for migrating from a Windows NT 4.0 domain to a Samba
domain and maintaining user, group and domain SIDs.
11) Support for establishing trust relationships with Windows NT 4.0
domain controllers.
12) Initial support for a distributed Winbind architecture using
an LDAP directory for storing SID to uid/gid mappings.
13) Major updates to the Samba documentation tree.

14) Full support for client and server SMB signing to ensure
compatibility with default Windows 2003 security settings.
15) Improvement of ACL mapping features based on code donated by
Andreas Grünbacher.
The source code can be downloaded from :

http://download.samba.org/samba/ftp/

The uncompressed tarball and patch file have been signed
using GnuPG. The Samba public key is available at

Binary packages are available at

end of the line for the samba-binaries mailing list

Folks,
~ The list's charter was to provide a means of coordination
between Samba package maintainers. This is now being done
mostly via individual contacts. In addition, the samba
and samba-technical mailing lists provide ample opportunities
for package maintainers to discuss issues and announce
new package versions.
Therefore, we have made a decision to shut down the
samba-binaries mailing list on September 1, 2004.
We will not be automatically subscribing any existing
list members to additional mailing lists. If you are
not subscribed to either samba or samba-technical and
wish to follow Samba's progress, you may do so by
visiting http://lists.samba.org/.

cheers, jerry
