[sane-devel] libusb and sane backend

This is dependent on the individual scanner. When the protocol is vendor-defined, the vendor can choose to ignore the USB_STANDARD requirements (as one Canon scanner does). The protocol then must be "discovered" through a scan observer program such as usbsnoopy. If you are using linux, usually the information needed about the scanner is available in /proc/bus/usb/devices for that device. You may not need the separate usb functions for this information. It is sometimes possible to have access by a usb_claim_interface(), (skip set configuration). You might attempt to read the status register through a register read for that chip. You will have to find the command that does respond, as the usb_control_msg or equivalent vendor command is necessary. regards, Gerald
[sane-devel] HP 4890 - Anybody working on it?
There is work already done as far as the genesys backend is concerned. The other part remaining is specific to the GL843 chip. The work can be estimated, as the GL841 backend is working, the GL646 backend is in progress, and anything else - GL843 - is a TODO. An invitation to a developer is available. regards, Gerald

Check it is enabled. Alos check if the user running the test has the rights to acces the parallel port. Regards, Stef

The software supplied is horrendously enormous, and I'd rather use it with Linux anyway. I've never done a Linux driver, much less a SANE driver, but I used to be a programmer, and have been thinking of taking a look. In fact, that's exactly why I subbed to this list. Not at all sure where to begin, however ... regards, Bill (OldProfessorBear) Phillips
[sane-devel] neatreceipts scanner
Hi All, I am running FreeBSD 6.2 Stable on a T41 (Thinkpad). I have a Neatreceipts scanner. http://www.amazon.com/NeatReceipts-Scanalizer-Professional-Combination-Organization/dp/B000BBCKOC I am not sure if anyone has used this in FreeBSD or if it even has a driver. I did not see it listed in SANE. But I am not sure if there is another brand name for it besides Neatreceipts. Here is what I see when I plug it in then unplug it. ugen0: vendor 0x07b3 600dpi USB Scanner, rev 1.10/5.01, addr 2 ugen0: at uhub1 port 2 (addr 2) disconnected All threads purged from ugen0.2 All threads purged from ugen0.1 All threads purged from ugen0 ugen0: detached My understanding was if the driver was recognized it would show as /dev/uscanner0. Here are the results of a SANE run: Gargoyle# sane-find-scanner -q found USB scanner (vendor=0x07b3, product=0x0412 [600dpi USB Scanner], chip=GT-6816) at libusb:/dev/usb1:/dev/ugen0 Gargoyle# scanimage -L device `gt68xx:libusb:/dev/usb1:/dev/ugen0' is a Plustek OpticSlim M12 flatbed scanner So it looks like the the Neatreceipts may be the same as the Plustek. But I am not sure if I am reading that correctly. What would a good next step be? Sincerely, Brendhan
[sane-devel] HP 4890 - Anybody working on it?
Hi, I tried to find something on the status of a driver for the HP4890, the only thing I found was a mail from 2005 that somebody is working on it... Has there been any progress? Or should I throw it in the bin and get a decent scanner? Unfortunately I am not really good at programming, so I won't be a lot of help, except for testing stuff... cheers Nils -- next part -- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... [sane-devel] Truncated saved image
I've set up xsane (0l99+0.991-2) with a new scanner (Epson Expession 1680), and I find that when I go to save a preview of a color scan as a tiff file, the resulting file is in proper colors in only about the bottom 5%, and the remainder of the file is black. When I save as a PNG, however, the saved file is completely in color. I'm more or less using xsane defaults. Haines Brown
[sane-devel] libusb and sane backend
Hello, Currently i'm trying to migrate a standalone program to a sane backend, i thought that the task would be simpler to migrate it in two stages: first to make the program a backend but using the libusb calls, after that and having a working backend, convert all the libusb stuff to sanei_usb. however, the backend doesn't work, the port aparently opens well, but the calls to usb_get_descriptor, usb_control_msg never return. Any one knows if there is any -bad- interaction between calling directly libusb and other sane libraries? [sane-devel] Astra 1220s freezes system
Hi, I am using Astra 1220 (scsi) with Debian/GNU Linux 4.0 (etch), kernel 2.6.22.1, and sane 1.0.18. After a couple of scans using xsane the scanner stops scanning often in the middle of a scan. xsane stops responding and eventually goes into uninteruptable sleep (state D). Often but not always the entire xserver freezes and I have to do a hard boot. The kernel spits out i/o error messages. Any subsequent scsi command also goes to sleep immediately. Even if the system is not hung, the xsane process can not be killed and starting a new one hangs it too. My scsi card is Domex 3191D. It uses passive termination and the scanner has two scsi ports, one of which is terminated,(the other has the cable). Would be grateful for you tips on how to go about fixing this. Or is this a bug ? I would gladly provide any further information required. regards b thomas
[sane-devel] Flatbed scanner that can scan to the edge?
Dear sane-devel If you want a cheap book scanner, do what I did. 4 years or more ago, I bought avery cheap Canon Lide 25. I bought this because the distance between the ending of the bulb and itscarrier is only a few mms. I carefully remover the 2 plastic strips down each side, so that the glass could be removed. Before this I stuck a label on the glass to mark the edge of the bulbcarrier. So when the glass is removed a glass cutter can remove the unnecessary glass, leaving a small piece untouched at the lamp start end, then removed part of the plastic case, and held it together with electrician's tape, and, bingo, you will have a scanner which will scan a page of a book, with the print edge, only 7mm from the gutter of the book. Every other image on scanning is upside down, but with straightening and Acrobat no bother, because Acrobat will rotate alternate pages. Regards Peter Davenport
