[sane-devel] Blank threshold adjustable?

2011-02-15 Thread Werner Holtfreter
Hello,

I'm using Ubuntu10.10, sane1.0.14-9 (thanks to Robert Ancell for
PPA) and Jeffrey Ratcliffe's great gscan2pdf0.9.31.

If I scan in colour, white paper is light grey. It could be nice to
see the exact colour of white, but it is not nice for normal use.
(And it could make greater a compressed file.)

gscan2pdf -- Preferences -- Blank threshold did not make a
difference. I need help to adjust the white level.

[sane-devel] Blank threshold adjustable?

2011-02-15 Thread m. allan noah
If you are scanning in binary, the sane backend for your scanner would
need to expose brightness/contrast/threshold options, and gscan2pdf
would need to let you change them. You did not say which scanner or
backend.

If you are scanning in gray, and something else is binarizing the
image, I cannot guess the solution.

If you are leaving the image in gray or color, you would need
brightness/contrast/gamma controls from the sane backend, or possibly
from gscan2pdf itself. Threshold only applies to binarization.

Ok, found one of my mistakes: missing libusb-devel and now I have
compiled the latest sane-backend (sane-backends-git20110215) with
configured libusb- support (./configure --enable-libusb_1_0).

Now I have same problem as normal user: no scanner found. With root-
access I get: Error while accessing device 'libusb:001:018': Unknown
argument (Sorry if this is not the same like native english error
message, because I translated this from german error message! :-) )
Everytime I try to access the scanner as root, the device identifier is
increased after this error message (001:010 was displayed in first message)!

Now I got more output in logfile (take a look at attachted logfile)!

What is next?

I found brightness/contrast/gamma controls in xsane. After find out
the right position from 3 parameters, it works.

Back to my preferred gscan2pdf:

It can call gimp and it is possible to make the same after scanning
with the internal files from gscan2pdf. It gives more control for
the user, but I can not see a simple procedure to modify all scans
in the job in one step...

Hello,

due to calibration, the scanner may take time to start. Slow scan times
may be due to the use of highest resolutions which generate lots of data.
Using libusb_1.0 speeds up scanning.
In order to check what is really going on, I nee a log file. The
appended
script will do a 600 dpi scan. Please send me the rts8891-scan-600.log it will

[sane-devel] LIDE 60. configure scanner - Mac Terminal

2011-02-15 Thread m. allan noah
wow- you're pretty far down the curve on this one. I'll try to be more explicit.

We are talking about source code. Not conf files (yet). Not compiled
libraries (yet). You don't currently have any source code on your box
unless you have explicitly downloaded it. We are going to download,
modify, and compile that source code into a library. I've never done
any of this on a Mac, so every detail here is suspect. The general
idea is the same.

1. install the libusb-dev package (or libusb-devel, not sure what your
OS calls it)

2. install gcc package and it's required dependencies

3. install the utility 'make' (it might be called gmake on your platform)

4. download latest sane-backends from http://www.sane-project.org/snapshots/
It will be named something like: sane-backends-git20110215.tar.gz

--use the terminal from here on out

5. extract the file you just downloaded with this command (correct
filename if different):
tar xzf sane-backends-git20110215.tar.gz
This will create a new directory, named something like:
sane-backends-git20110215

6. Change in this new directory:
cd sane-backends-git20110215

7. edit backend/genesys_devices.c file. I like vim, you can use
whatever editor you want, including some icky gui thing, as long as it
does not try to reformat the text.

8. around line 1573 you will see a section of data for the lide 60.
Near the end of that section, there are a bunch of flags, separated by
the '|' symbol. Remove the lines with 'CALIBRATION' in them, and add
one in their place that says:
'| GENESYS_FLAG_NO_CALIBRATION'

9. save the file.

10. Run the following command (all on one line)
BACKENDS=genesys ./configure --prefix=/usr --sysconfdir=/etc --disable-locking

11. Run the following command (takes awhile)
make

12. copy the file backend/.libs/libsane-genesys.so.1.0.23 over top of
the copy provided by your distro, not sure where it is on a Mac.
Probably in /usr/local/lib?
Note that the file name will change- your current file might end in
.21 or .22, that's fine. We want the new one to have the same name. We
are replacing the old file. You can save the old one before you
overwrite it if you want.

13. test with scanimage or xsane and various options.

Only step #12 needs to be done as root.
